as the title says: it is a good idea to add grub 2 to intrepid

Developer comments
Grub 2 is available in package "grub-pc" for those who want to use it. Switching to it by default won't be done once it's ready.

Is it stable yet?

Considering if it wont work, then Ubuntu wont boot, it needs to be rock solid.

I look forward to GRUB2 though. Supposedly, its supposed to be more reliable.

The old Grub at least isn't even rock solid. 21-Errors seem to happen far too often. Every 5th Ubuntu newbie I convinced to try Ubuntu, installing Ubuntu the first time, seems to get the nasty 21-Error. Of course they get pissed off and will likely never try any Linux within the next 10 Years, because the last time it fucked up their whole system.

I think that Problem happens when SATA HDD's are in use or something other with Grub not noticing the correct Particions during Installation.
So it doesn't matter if Intrepid makes use of grub or grub2 as long as 21'ers don't happen any more.

I at least, am tired of convincing people to use Ubuntu, then them ending up with fucked up Systems, and I have to tell them they have to go through hell to fix that damn Problem or install Windows again.
Either way, they'll hate me and Linux.
Sorry, but that sucks.

So I voted for this Idea (and the linked one by droetker), because I heard Grub2 is installed entirely into MBR. So no 21'ers possible any more. At least that's what I understand.

+1, though I might be a bit biased since I've been involved in GRUB2 development (OK, that was too onerous, I just send two or three patches). GRUB2 was redesigned from ground up to be rock-solid in its starting phase, and the only problems now in the PC platform stem from very complicated setups like raid+lvm which make the "core" GRUB boot image too big to embed after the boot sector but impossible to put in a fixed location in the HD.

Grub2 wont be ready in time for intrepid (by the time intrepid is released, it will only have just become beta.

This is why we should encourage canonical to place a few full time developers on the team to help out, so it can be ready for jazzy jackass.

The problem is that there are many programmers out there who would be good enough to work on grub2, but people always enjoy working on projects like gnome instead (people would be more impressed if you were the programmer of cheese rather then grub2, despite grub2 being much more advanced).

Yet, grub2 is critical, because its finally multi-platform, supports scripting (so we could even make it auto-configure itself), and it fixes serious design issues in Grub1 which cause errors (many of which Microsofts boot loader suffers from too).

Grub2 I believe is good enough to encourage motherboard manufacturers to build in a 256mb flash memory module into their motherboards to store Grub2 it on safely so it doesn't conflict with anything). If they did that, we wouldn't have to worry about overwriting other operating systems MBR's all the time, and we would have something as reliable as the EFI bootloader.

I don't think many people realise exactly how much safer Grub2 would make booting linux, whilst also improving reliability. Since its cross platform too and designed to be more extendible, it means we won't need to have programmers maintaining a different bootloader for each architecture, instead allowing them all to focus on just grub2.

Grub 2 has been in Ubuntu since Dapper:
https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2

I've even used it myself - it's simple enough to install.

Yeah, but thats still an alpha version. Thats why we still need more developers working on it. Its been 5 years to get to this point.

GRUB "Legacy" never got to official "release" state, though. The last version I saw was 0.97

I love Grub2. Its great to hear that you have submitted patches too (they definitely need more of you).

But their todolist looks still a bit full. Nobody wants this more then me, but it will only be VERY early beta at intrepid ipex.
