Description
try opening a really huge directory full of images that is sorted by modification date, nautilus acts crazy for like a minute before it could load up all the thumbnails. images get thrown around in every direction as it loads more and more images and tries to load their thumbnails of various sizes at the same time..
i think nautilus should load the full list of files from the directory first and fully sorts them before it starts to load the thumbnails..

This sounds like a bug. Have you filed a bug report for this yet?

it cant reserve place for the images until it loaded then since it doesnt know how much space to reserve.

@dino surely it would be possible to decide on a maximum size and reserve that and then let each image fill that? Or some kind of cache - either way this is something which would make a big difference to usability

i think he's talking more about how nautilus tries to load the thumbs before it has the list of files completely loaded and in place. witch when you look in a folder with 400 to 800 pics can take 2 to 10 min to load(if not longer).

dino: with a ls you have the size of every file in much more less than a second..

Hhhmmm ... this is not an issue I've seen. But then, I have configured Nautilus to show contents of directories as a list, not icons/thumbs/???. Much easier to work with, much easier to understand, and, much faster.

We do need better thumbnail management for Nautilus as it is far too slow in displaying thumbs for a large directory and takes up way too much space being PNG images instead of JPG...
Sad to say but Windows had it sussed in the Thumbs.db files and changable thumb size and quality...
