The problem is in the speed of the resize process. It is terrifying slow (due to a X issue) compared to Windows/OSX for example. Metacity was slower than KWin, and compiz is even worse.
So I think the rectangle is a proper "workaround" as default, if you dont have a nvidia 8800GT ;-)
