Description
There's a common problem for Ubuntu users who have enabled the automatic connection. When you login manually, your password get stored somewhere and you don't need to retype it each time you start an application who needs it. But when you autologin, some applications require typing your password again. That's stupid, cause if I set up automatic connection, it was to avoid those repetitive password entries.

So, I don't know how is managed the password in Ubuntu, but please change it so that an automatic login does the same as a manual one.

Example : I installed Ubuntu on my mother's computer (and fought to do so). As she hates password and doesn't have a brilliant memory, I set up automatic login (by the way, Microsoft Windows® doesn't ask any password), and create two shortcuts on her desktop, Evolution and Firefox. She launches Evolution, and a silly keyring manager appears over her screen.

I've read forum to fix this, but the solution is removing the "login" entry in the Keyring manager, which, first, isn't very secure, but second, is too hard to change (as a newbie).

Notice there are other cases you get prompted for password in you set up automatic connection : Gnome-Do for me =/.

Automatic login on an administrator account? This is pure madness.

Administrative tasks should not be ran by someone who don't understand the need to protect them by some sort of warning (the way vista warn you is good to warn but poor in case you leave your PC while some looser comes to remove your printer, install something or change your desktop manager)

@Ssdg: er - what do you mean? he didn't mean autologin in gdm, did he?
Why not, I have autologin at home as well - this is no problem or security risk because there is nobody that has physical access to my computer.
And if someone (in Vista or elewhere) goes away and doesn't logout or locks the screen then - bad luck and guilty.
BTW, you can't have autologin in Ubuntu, because root has no password, and AFAIK he is denied to login in GDM.

Wouldn't make much sense neither, a root full session. very bad.

@orkerone what do you mean with "automatic connection" - which connection?
Do you mean autologin, or keyring password = "" or what.
You can set your GNOME keyring password as "", then everything's clear.
please explain more clearly.

What I meant was autoconnection in GDM, effectively. See, I'm the owner of my computer and the only user too, that's why I don't want to type my password and interrupt the boot process each time I connect.

However, GDM autologin doesn't mean administrative tasks can be done. Set autologin on your computer, and try to launch Synaptic. It'll ask you for password.

See my point : Auto connection in GDM make some usual apps ask for password (Evolution, Gnome Do).

As I'm not sure to be very clear, could someone explain how passwords are managed in Ubuntu ? What's the "keyring manager", the login account, etc.
