Description
My point here, is that the default startpage should be more robust than it currently is. At least, provide means to configure it in order to have direct access to their GMail or Yahoo mailboxes. Publish some interesting info about Ubuntu on it. Make users want to keep this page as their start!

The start page is so annoying.
Because it uses chrome://ubufox/content/startpage.html which uses a JavaScript to instantly redirect to http://start.ubuntu.com/8.04/ which causes a mess, because if you click on the "Home" button, then you cant click on the "Back" button.

I preferred this page to be local as it was in feisty.
Besides that I start my browser with the last session 90% of the time.

You're in luck! A Ubuntu Web Presence Team has just been announced. One of their tasks is contribute to the start page.

The start page uses a custom google search that clearly tricks users into making ubuntu earn money, and returning results that are not quite like the ones that google returns. There are even more banners on the ubuntu search.
I agree that making money using a custom search in the default start page can be an interesting idea, but why not be honest and write that in the default start page? Write something onto it, like e.g. "search google trough this box and let ubuntu earn money" with a link explaining that the box is not the standard one.
The worse, the current search box is tied to uk, which is *very* bad for users from other countries.

I have no problem whatsoever with the start page being something that makes Ubuntu money; I do have a problem with it saying it's Google and then sending me to Google UK, which gets different (and fewer) hits than if I went to http://www.google.com directly. This makes me change my start page, which I'm sure wasn't the intention.
