Idea #10602: Green Ubuntu

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #81: Power Management.
Written by AACherokee the 2 Jul 08 at 08:46. Related project: brainstorm.ubuntu.com. Status: New
Rationale
Hello,

as everybody knows, saving energy is the main topic at the moment. How about creating a "Green Ubuntu" - which means optimizing Ubuntu to really help save energy. Some simple Ideas to achieve this:

- optimize scheduling to allow the cpu to sleep as long as possible
- good processor-frequ-scaling
- a working (!!!) Hibernate Mode (working out of the box - i think this would help saving a log - because I know a lot of people who run their office-pcs 24hs because they dont want to close all applications when they stop working!!)
.
.
.

More ideas welcome. I think, solving these (and many other possibilities to reduce energy consumption) will boost the ubuntu popularity...

Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #10602 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

I voted yes because I really want this done, but I don't want it to be a derivative. I think we should already be doing this on all forms of Ubuntu anyway.

That might have been what you meant from the beginning, but I thought you wanted a new version of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu already does this, and as for hibernation, that's a completely different thing which is already being addressed.

Meanwhile if you'd really like a green ubuntu, http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Greenman-Murrine?content=78292

Guys I don't think this is about theming, it's about saving energy. Voted +1, Excellent Idea, however it'll be more an improvement of what we already have. There are already Ideas for this.

I propose to
- de-activate the use of bluetooth when not connected to a device
- decrase the power of wifi antenna while no bandwidth is necessary (reading emails after dowloading, for example)
