Description
Apple has introduced MobileMe,
-labeled as "Exchange for the rest of us".
-unclear as of yet whether they will release an API. They may do so to extend adaption by Windows users.

However,
-as it seems that it will be a big player,
-to provide IPhone sync with Linux,
-to avoid the same problems faced with lack of Exchange support for a long time

MobileMe support should be implemented either through Conduit or some other solution.

I vote +0 for this, and there is a VERY good reason

As you guys know, I used to work for an Apple Premium reseller, and:
1) .Mac was very slow. MobileMe will just be even slower because people are actually using it now
2) No PHP support
3) Its just basically a website using webdav.
4) I could rarely get any uploads to complete being uploaded to .Mac. It always timed out.

I personally dont think we should pursue MobileMe. Apple could have implemented it in a way that people could run their own, instead they are using it as a profit generator.

I don't think we should be purposely trying to get people stuck in the trap of using it personally.

What we should be doing is making it possible for people to easily set up their own equivalent.

Auzy, don't forget about making any 'equivalent' compatible to the point of being able to interact. I'm thinking, in the same way that Samba allows other systems to interact with CIFS & smb servers.

I think being able to implement some sort of MobileMe sync features would be a great thing. However, I think it will be more of the responsibility of the application devs, i.e. Thunderbird, the Lightning add-on, Sunbird, etc. Since the MobileMe email is just an imap account, the real thing to focus on is being able to get the calendars and contacts syncing. I really like the idea of MobileMe, having all of my email, contacts, calendars, etc synchronized across all of my devices, and I think this is something that the Linux community really needs to stay on top of because working through and around the cloud is becoming more and more prevalent and is where the industry is heading. We need to be able to provide support for these services.

Yeah, but MobileMe's sync features aren't really that amazing. Its basically just a sync network. We could just copy the calender files and all that too.

Overall though, there has apparently (I don't know myself), been a lot of anger over MobileMe anyway, because people aren't happy they need to pay for it.

We really just need a better syncing system, and I think the next version of gnome will be getting a much better one anyway

The key point here is that many people use Linux as well as another operating system, and it would be great to have automatic syncing between desktop apps on these OSes, just like you can have now between Mac OS X and Windows, using Mobile Me.

Obviously, you can manually import address book and contacts files, but this is rather missing the point, as syncing should be automatic and require minimal user intervention.

It would just make sense for the community to support what is becoming a very popular option for syncing, and something that is likely to attract people to the platform

From experience at the applecentre, again, .Mac was NEVER popular. Apple will tell you all this stuff about how awesome it is, etc. But the reality is, most people barely use it and never renew. We were always being pushed to sell it though

So many people have had such a bad experience with mobileme so far with emails not working, etc, I doubt many will ever trust it now.

We do need something similar, but certainly not mobileme. There must be better alternatives out there already, we just need to find them/ promote them. Promoting MobileMe is good for nobody. Before the iphones the service was total Sh***, but now that there is even more load, it will be even more worthless (fortunately for syncing they can take 10mins to sync at 500bytes / sec and nobody will notice).

I'm anxious to see an idea for this from you (or someone else) :)

Well, I don't need the service anyway actually (I only need bookmark syncing).

But anyone voting +1 on this needs to know, that since MobileMe/.Mac has traditionally been a problematic service, that users will blame Linux the moment there are issues (because they will simply assume its not apple's fault). So it may even make us look bad.
