Description
We need to change the default screensaver. The problem with the current screensaver is that the first time you meet it is when the screen suddenly turns black during the installation. That is very confusing for most users, as the first thought always is that the installation has crashed.
I suggest a screensaver that helps brand Ubuntu, like for example the "Floating Ubuntu" screensaver. It could also be a textbased screensaver that could run on older machines witch doesn't support 3D.

The reasons it defaults to black screensaver are:
- other screensavers cost battery power
- 3d sceensavers make a good portion of the video cards out there (think Via and such) crash or are too slow for other non-3d supported video-cards. (it takes a whole minute to get back to the desktop)
I think on the Live-CD there should be no screensaver.
On installed system, only if the user is not using a LCD, then black screen or very lightweight screensaver (with a nice of 20 or something)

Didn't someone already suggest this?

Reasons to change the screensaver:
1) Why the hell are people using a liveCD whilst on battery power?
2) Black screens are confusing. Users cant immediately tell its a screensaver, rather then their computer randomly appearing to shut down.
3) How much battery you seriously going to save.. Is it worth the extra 10mins for a lot of user confusion. It makes 1000X more sense to show a basic screensaver for a while, then put the screen in standby mode, so that at least there is some feedback beforehand.

how does a static image use more battery power than a black image? given that the backlight/monitor isnt controlled by the screensaver rendering an image in frequently (not more than once a minute) will use the same amount of power as not rendering.

There is no power saving from using a black screen on an LCD monitor (including laptops) as it does not turn off the backlight.
Using a floating Ubuntu logo (2D) would not use any significant amount of resources. It certainly would not burden any system that is not burdened by the OS already.
I agree strongly with others here - a black screen is very confusing. The first time I saw it I though Ubuntu crashed. 'Why not simply turn off the screen completly?' was my thought when I discovered it was broken. Putting a logo or something moving shows that the system is still working - just not being used. Putting a monitor into sleep mode normally does the same thing as they normally have a 'sleep mode blinking light' on them.
Black screen is bad.

static images are bad for lcd's because the image could burn in and you'll see it's ghost long after... the same applies to crt but it just takes a little longer. A floating ubuntu that changes color and position would be in order... something like xp does. If the backlight doesn't go out the power consumption is just about the same, it's just that a moving image keeps the screen refreshed by alternating colors and keeps the statics from burning into the screen.
If there really is a significant difference in power consumption it should be calculated and than make decisions based on that.
Saving power is a good thing, i'm all for it, and in general it's all about tweaking.
It's also true that black screens are confusing for some users... but that can be solved with a few power schemes.... just don't leave the black screen by default.
ubuntu does have a nice logo and i'd like to see it more often :B
That's just what i think
Best regards

Great idea. How many times have you walked around a large company or university setting and seen dozens or hundreds of Windows logos flashing at you from a screensaver.
Or have you ever seen a TV interview with a scientist or whomever with the darned Windows logo again bouncing around in the background of the shot.
I'd love to see the day where all those screens are flashing the Ubuntu logo. Just a nice simple 2D bitmap slowly slide around on the screen for all the world to see.

Yeah, just have the ubuntu logo and name and version either float around, or flash here and there.
