Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
I suggest to use mouse doubleclick at empty space. It must be user-selectable as follow:
do nothing;
create empty text file;
create new folder;
make a sticky note (for desktop)
or so.

(added) Why dislike this? Please drop a line. By default it's never doubleclicks. Only option.

Why a double click when you can do that with a simple right-click?
(waiting for response before -1)

Because in business environment (or battery powered workstation) there is no time to browse context menus. Another reason is double-click not used. 3rd reason is simplify to do common task(s).

If you not want this, you may select 'do nothing' in control panel, and enjoy with double-click on freespace does nothing, as before.

What is quicker :

- right-click
- select "new folder"

or

- double click
- select "new folder" ?

Ok, double click is not used, but in interaction design, double click means "open or launch something", and right-clik means "what can I do as special action here".

Not, no

- double click
- select "new folder"

but

once open control panel and assign say 'add sticky note' for desktop double-click.

Then at any time double-click desktop and immediately get a sticky note here.
Some programs, for example many CAD apps for electronic design, have a tunable 'add' function on dbl-click on workspace.

+1 I love it!
I see that it is coherent with the modern interfaces, like in FF3, when you doubleclick in tab bar you get a new tab!
We have only to choose the behaviour.
