Idea #10388: Solution for mobile device synchronization in linux.

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #28: Enhance mobile devices sync .
Written by animaniac the 27 Jun 08 at 19:36. Category: Hardware support. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Currently there is no easy way to sync devices, a good solution that would satisfy most (i believe) would be to make a removable media sync application, that works by selecting folders to be synchronized (think: the way ipods sync with itunes). Im not 100% sure how this could be implemented but a good way might be to store a file on the removable device/media with the information necessary to make it possible to use the service on several computers.

As for more advanced synchronization of things such as contacts and which emails have been read, these features should be available in the same program, but locked until a supported device is connected (where more device support can be added with time), the goal should be that with time it support all major platforms such as LiMo, Android, WinMo and mobile OSX.

I think "wammu" or something like that helps

animaniac wrote on the 27 Jun 08 at 21:05
while wammu is ok, it only works on a few phone models, and thats its only use.

im suggesting a almost universal sync app that would work with not only phones, but also portable media players, external hard discs (it could even be used for backup).

$ rsync -HPvax "/home/alice/Documents/" "/media/usb1/Documents/"

animaniac wrote on the 27 Jun 08 at 21:54
@Eldmannen, well yes, this would be the basic feature im suggesting but in a user friendly gui with easy check box selection (again, think itunes sync), you can select directories, and if the device is supported then one can also check contacts, bookmarks etc.....

We're all aware that if you're l33t enough you can do anything on Linux, Eldmannen. No need to remind us of that.

Want to help make that user-friendly?

theres Conduit, dut it lacks support for the more advanced sync with mobiles i mentioned and its still under development (probably will be for a good while longer too with all the stuff theyr adding), but its definately worth keeping an eye on.

Sound like a perfect job for OpenSync:

www.opensync.org.

Should be better integrated in Kubuntu/Ubuntu.
