Idea #10299: Login via USB stick

Related to: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Description
I suggest to add automatic login at insert of keyed USB stick, instead of typing name & password, and make prepare two sticks (for user & admin) at default installation process.
While admin's stick removed - must be auto-logout, while user's stick removed - screensaver activated.

what about /home on a stick?

... I submit that idea right now. :-)

Be careful when /home on a stick.

Key/password on stick has no disadvantages.
But, /home on a stick is dangerous:
a small static discharge, and you lost all your /home...
(key/password may be re-created).
a removing stick in wrong moment - again loss of /home...
(key/passwd files is read only, and remove of stick is failsafe).
a noise on usb cable in wrong moment - ...
Usb flash drives is designed only to move files between computers, but not to store last copy of important data.

Perhaps instead of replacing the login us it to augment it...

Security is by
1) something you are
2) something you have
3) something you know

... two out of three aint bad (although a webcam could take care of something you are and you would be 2.5-3)

Or are you suggesting this more as a 'rescue disk' approach where you lock that key in the safe?

Maybe I don't successfully understand question...

At this moment, I not think about extremely secure system, but I about to get easy and friendly system.
IMHO, insertion of usb stick OR entering login&passwd may be used to login. (So if password is lost, the stick may function as 'rescue').
But someone may configure auth to want stick AND password, thus improving security.

I don't know about webcam login... I can't imagine that. Maybe fingerprint readers is more useful...

jpka /home on a stick meant like this http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/10300/

/nomad (mobile home) a synched copy of /home together with the users desktop and settings and a auto login.

I asume USB sticks will improve and things like static and unplugging failures will also be a thing of the past.
Todays short commings should not limit today's ideas.

I do not know before about mobile homes.
Then it's a good idea, assuming /home on stick is not a last copy, but backup synced copy.

Some performance issues may exist?... if my /home is big..

+1 to 10300 ;)

This idea reminds me on those cold war films where they have authentication key to start a nuclear count down.
It's interesting, but I don't know how useful it is.
What happens if you lost this key. I know I could lost it.
It would be better to support finger print scanner if they aren't already.
But this is very interesting idea, so I'll give it +1.

jpka :-) I never said it would be simple, i agree /trailer would need a large engine. Espessially for the people who store their entire Movie cataloge in /home but that's up to the smart friend who know about programming. I'd just would find it damn fine to have my desktop setings and my documents with me on a stick. (and be able to plug it in, auto login edit my doc, unplug and run to the other side of the venue, and if needed do the same thing there)

Primož those movies where written by people with similair ideas, and they didn't even have the technologie at hand that we have now. But instead of stupid war we could use it for peace of mind 'somewhere' in the future.

Some people have a screwdriver in their pocket, and some have a USB stick that only looks like a screwdriver. ;-)
