Idea #1027: Dual monitor autodetect&on screen suggestions

Written by artbar the 29 Feb 08 at 06:27. Category: System. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
It would be very nice if (K-, X-) ubuntu could detect second monitor once it is connected and present user with several placement options immediately, i.e.:

Copy primary to secondary (in the case with laptop I can close the lid)
Extend primary to the left (my external monitor is on the side)
Extend primary to the right (my external monitor is on the right)

And of course the second step to confirm the resopution of the external monitor with the possiblity to correct it just before pressing Finish button.

The general idea is to make connecting secondary monitor easy, realy easy.

The Vista approach to this, with a single, brief, self-explanatory dialog and illustration is an ideal solution. Definitely worth a look. I haven't got a Vista machine here, but I'll see if I can post a screenshot later.

Webs05, I did search for "dual monitor" and similar but I found nothing. Maybe I was too lazy, sorry about that. And good news about Xdandr GUI:

I just want to be this available in all -buntus.

Include disper...its got all features needed and if ubuntu was to throw together a gui in glade for it and automate it it would be awesome.
