Since Skype is closed source (probably the most closed source ever), this is not gonna happen. Skype4Pidgin requires Skype to run on its own and merely works as a go-between.
But probably Pidgin will get some Jingle love this SoC.

Just so you know, Vadim, that's a pretty scary link, and I don't plan on installing that .deb. How did you manage to get a skype/pidgin .deb file hosted on "New Zealand's Largest Job Site?" And why is there no description of the .deb file anywhere? Your project page link returns a 404 Not Found error.

Wow, what's with these snobs with their two ideas blather? In any case, no there is nothing that can compete with Skype at this point. Ekiga might be up to it in the near future. Pidgin would likely be up to it as well, but they're a bit ridiculously far behind on audio/video.
As for this idea in particular, I apologize, I have to vote it down. Skype... ugh.
Right-Left layout, if you were to put it in another idea I'd vote for that.
