Description
Hi just purchased a dvd with Ubuntu8.04 [U8.04] on it. Installed it on dual boot sys with XP and Sabayon-Linux, the U dvd gave one option to either use entire Hard-drive or do a manual set-up, I chose entire hard-drive and expected it to later ask me how I wish to partition the HDD and then install the U8.04. Alas, no! The U8.04 was installed over he entire hdd thereby losing evrything I had. So I am now trying to re-install evrything and then U8.04..
Beware, this may be specific to the dvd I got with the magazine Linux Forum LXFDVD107 July2008,or that U8.04 installer only gives you the ltd option.
Why cant all the distros agree on a single installer, which can allow one to load diff distro's on top of the kernel? is this a naive question? I am new to Linux.

hey idiot,first read the manual and do serious stuff like partitioning harddisk.which country your from seems
you messed up hdd.first of all
*****Dont blame,because you took the installation for yourself and didnt read good manual.if u cant install seek an expert.
****your trying to install three distro's,i.e three
os onto single harddisk not at all good choice.
every linux is different and its different os not kernel
****so dual boot was ok.you should not experiment too much with os,linux.try virtualbox for doing that.before messing hdd
the menu you chose to install is for partitioning hdd not playing with kernel or linux..lol;
I chose entire hard-drive and expected it to later ask me how I wish to partition the HDD and then install the U8.04. ??
hmmmmm this destoys hdd contents i.e erases entire
hdd(including fat and ntfs,ext3,ext2 partitions) for
complete ubuntu only system.

@dragoninsane: that's no way to call someone idiot on an ubuntu page. If he doesn't know it, he won't learn it if the people he could learn it from call him "hey idiot".

Calling someone "idiot" this way disqualifies yourself.
This is a brainstorm, to be conctructive, everyone can make errors.
Ok.

@fruit: Sorry, but you have to make your idea more clear, otherwise you will get responses like that (and the idea WILL rated negative). The way you wrote it is a complain that something got wrong and you lost data.
Maybe you can edit the idea and make it more clear: "make the installer unmisunderstandable" or something.

but be fast ;-)

hi dragonsinsane prev install was logical and did not require a delve into a manual. From what is being touted abut Linux installs I expected another Distro atop the SabayonLinux would follow the same process of allowing one to view or change partitions as most other distros appear to do automaticaly, before the changes implemented. It seems from further browsing that U8.04 may err on automatically or initially assessing or searching for any previous Windows installations.
Thanks 4 ur advice on no moe than 3 OS's on a single HDD and virtualbox about which I shall enquire soon.
Retrospectively, I have learnt that a backup before u experiment is helpful. For a newbie who just installed Sabayon it was expected that a "newer" Ubuntu would be even more "idiot" proof.

@dragoninsane: What's with the attitude?

I'm not sure if this idea is valid as I clearly remember there was a slider bar and an option to choose how much space do you want to allocate... are you sure it's an 8.04 dvd, from ubuntu?

First, is so a bugreport which should go to Launchpad. But since fruit is a complete newbie, we can probably excuse him ;-).

@fruit: I'm not sure how you could misunderstand "Use entire hard drive for Ubuntu". Of course this will use the entire drive and not some part of it.

sorry for that,mistake.but why does every user expects
whole world out of linux,and linux
still managing to do decent job.i was just telling dont play with distro's.if u want use virtualization software.
i hate the idea of triple boot,like attaching SLI nvidia cards,lol.

You said "use the whole harddrive" and so it did? What's the problem?

Folks

This is a good example for an area for new users.

The days of reading a manual before installing linux are disappearing.

If the install went as stated then it needs to be seen to.
- either there is a problem with the version (or some other version) of Ubuntu, or
- there is a problem with "the disk that was bought" (from where? - we need to consider other possibilities)

If the install went as it should but precautions were not noticed, then some improvement may be needed.

Anybody remember the days when a re-install of Ubuntu would not happen because it would recognise that it had been on the system, and you'd have to wipe the partition and reformat it - it would refuse to write over Itself (how many newbies thought they had wrecked that space on their hard drive?!?).

@fruit
Thanks for the heads up !
I am sure most of us would like to see you happily in to an Ubuntu experience.
