Description
The Categories in many cases have double senses. One idea has parts of 2 categories.
ATM tags are included in brainstorm - VERY good.
But I vote to replace categories completely with tags - it is redundant information.

People might use several different tags which mean the same thing -- how can anyone ever browse the site? At present the categories give defined sections into which ideas are sorted, which makes for easy browsing.

@melat0nin: If the existing categories became tags, we could either limit the tagging to these catogories or require a minimum of one of these categories (which would be tags) to be attached to the idea. That way, you can still browse by tags named the name as the existing categories.

Both tags And categories are good - keep both methods.
But it would be nice if it was possible to elect up to three categories (in descending order of importance).
Users could flag submissions that have (spammed) or used irrelevant categories.
Tags are a way for overcoming the shortfalls of search by categories only. But categories are very specific, so they have benefits for searching also.
Now e can do general searches or specific searches - things are getting better. And they will continue to get better.

@melat0nin: Please, don't vote before understanding completely an idea. I am saying that because you had questions. But as @flammon cleared them maybe you could have the chance to think better.
I think Tags is can do everything Categories do. Exactally the same way and even more, like:
1. Search for single-tagged categories
2. Search for double-only tagged categories
1. Search for single or double tagged categories
And it solves the problem when an idea does not fit exactallyin one category. It's a sort of "fuzzy" aspect. I agree also on limiting the number of allowed tags per idea. Three is a good number, as suggested above.

Yes. There could be some preformed tags (like the categories now) that could be used by clicking that would prevent typos and being "duplicate" and "duplicates" different tags - and additionally you could write your own.
Good would be a phase now to collect tags by writing now (for a few weeks or so) - and then kind of fixate them to have a list to choose of - this is always better than handwriting, for databases.
But additionally one should be able to write tags freely as well.

The idea of categories still makes sense. Its useful to have predefined top level cateogorizing.
However, it would be nice to create custom user searches on the navbar using tags. So if you wanted a canned search for Compiz related things you could add it to the sidebar like the categories. http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/9778/

Categories is a limited form of tagging. It limits the ideas to one tag, the "category". In other words, tagging is like having the ability to put ideas into multiple categories.
We don't need both but like I said in an earlier comment, some rules such as tagging with the minimum of one of the following Accessibility, Brainstorm, Documentation, Education, Gaming, Graphics etc. is all we really need to keep the existing categories functionality.

As I said, "Category" is now redundant information, it just makes the database structure more complicated.
Better would be to pick some tags out of a list...

@melat0nin: I personally do prefer tags to categories, but I think there's definitely room for both. There is a potential problem with tags that you pointed out. I've suggested another idea to help combat that problem, which is to suggest already existing tags, when you enter tags in bstorm -- #10241.
