A center of Welcoming is a necessary tool for new users. Here you perform the main tasks and configure your desktop soon after the installation standard.

It would be very good that the next Ubuntu has this facility. The Ubuntu is a success among new users and many of them do not know that the possibilities included in the center of welcome there.

I hope that my idea at all like. I have developed a new mockup seeking to improve understanding of my mind. Thanks for the tip brettalton.

If this could be incorporated into the 'Ubuntu Help Center' it could be good. Currently the help centre is a bit 'flat'.

Good idea as long as doesn't open on login like Vista. The idea of integrating in the Help Centre is a good one.

Horrible mockup but I do agree with the concept.

yes, also add the games and openoffice to that, so that people who NEVER USE games office or thunderbird have a cleaner PC.

...this would also speed up the initial install

i'd say choose for a more synaptic related layout.

+10

It is related to an idea i posted not so long ago, tho i can't find it right now.

I love this idea.
This kind of thing already exists for windows server 2008. I envision something like this: http://www.win2008workstation.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/setup13. jpg
I like your mock-ups as well. 1 additional idea is that it may go online and post latest news/software/links for Ubuntu. I think that it should start by default but like it's windows counterpart have a [] check box saying "do not show again on startup"
