Description
I want some simple drawing tools (like those found in Microsoft Paint).
For drawing straight lines and rectangles.
I use the Pencil tool in GIMP, but I cant draw a straight line, it is too difficult for me.
I want a simple line drawing tool, where I press and hold down the mouse button, and then when I move the mouse, it doesn't really draw the line until I release the button. It only shows how it would draw it if i would release the button until I really release the mouse button, then it really draws the line.

I agree that it's hard to do things like that in GIMP, and it shouldn't be. However, as far as I remember, it's also hard to do things like that in Photoshop, so I'm not surprised.
However, there's a nice little package called gpaint that I found after reading your idea and realizing I wanted one too. It has all of the basic functionality you would expect in a painting program, including drawing straight lines and rectangles. In fact, it's pretty much a copy of Microsoft Paint, except free and on a better operating system :) It can even open multiple file types and edit them.
I know that that doesn't solve the GIMP problem - and I think that GIMP should have a simple interface option that functions basically as an enhanced version of Paint. However, you should also know that you can achieve this functionality using the path tool (the pen with lines and crap coming out of it). Just click once for the first point in the line, and click again at the second (in design mode). Then click "Stroke Path" in the paths dialog window. You can choose your line style there. Not easy, I know. It's an elegant line drawing tool for a more civilized age. :)
Note, however, that I really had to look to figure all that stuff out. Not readily accessible for a normal user.

Just curious... is it accessibility at issue or just that it is not easy to figure out (usability)?
Pick the pencil, then over the canvas hold down shift to see the straight rubber-band line. Click the mouse button to make it permanent.
But, it does require a two-handed operation.

BTW, Inkscape and XaraLX are much better for drawing than GIMP. GIMP is the right tool for photo and image edition though.

frogitts,
Oh yeah, that works. I didn't know about that.
jhoger,
Oh that works too, didn't know about that either.
Paint is the best software in the universe. :D

I think The Gimp is more photo-editing orientated and this kind of functionality should be looked for in simple drawing tools (like that Gpaint) or more sophisticated vector drawing software such as Inkscape.
Plus, if I recall correctly, you have the "GFig" plugin enabled by default (I might be wrong) that has some tools to draw some geometric figures (rectangles included).

@jhoger: if the gimp isn't for drawing, why have a pencil tool?
I'm not sure this is the right place to complain, but gimp should have more drawing tools.

If you want features like Microsoft Paint then try finding an alternative to Paint rather than the GIMP which is for image manipulation, not drawing simple bitmaps.
By the way, for rectangles, select the rectangle tool, Edit>Stroke Selection.... And for straight lines, there's the Paths Tool which draws straight (and bezier) lines. Then you'll want to Edit>Stroke Path....

hold shift key while dragging the line,it will make it straight in photoshop.maybe also in gimp.also i never created a photo or image edit in because iam scared of those 3 windows that gimp shows on start.also i hope all the keys (kb shortcuts)that work with ps would work with gimp.PS-photoshop,well i had problems with extra added features in ps cs3.its overwhelming and gimp is underwhelming.go mug up some silly kb shortcuts of ps.also ps is setting web standards in photoediting and are u thinkin' !

drinkypoo: my point in that regard was that there are *better* tools for drawing. GIMP is great for image editing. There's a difference between drawing and editing.
Either way, you can draw straight lines using Shift and the Pencil tool. The UI even tells you this, and apparently Photoshop works the same way.
As to whether GIMP needs more drawing tools... like what?
Really, if you haven't tried Inkscape, it is a really well designed UI. Quite intutive.

Hey guys, go look at Filters->Render->Gfig in the GIMP menu.

Holding the shift key will do lines. Holding the control key meanwhile will constrain the angle so it's easier to draw a rectangle or something like that.
