Idea #10140: Create a "we want to play on ubuntu" page

Written by syberjj the 21 Jun 08 at 12:36. Category: Gaming. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Create a place where we linux users can shout out to the world "WE WANT TO PLAY ON UBUNTU LINUX"

Let us all sign and show the big companies that we exist and we are a potential marked that grows more and more every day!

Instead of asking the ubuntu team to make games work with ubuntu linux (which is quite stupid, hows that suposed to work and how much waste of development would that be?) make the gaming companies see that we exist and want support! Dont let all our requests get scattered and ignored over the www, make them all meet and bundle at one official ubuntu page.

There are games done for windows, mac, wii, ps3, psp and all other plataforms, why not ubuntu linux?

If the gaming world is able to visit a page and see "xxxxxxx ubuntu linux users want to play games!" why shouldnt they start doing it? It should be much easyer to develop games for a WORKING OS then for windows, with all its bugs and problems. That would mean less work for them, less support needed and more fun for us!

Please ubuntu team! Help us shout out!

PS: that can also be used for other types of applications, but I think games are the sollution to give Ubuntu the suport it needs. Games for Ubuntu bring working hardware for ubuntu (remember the nvidia logo before each game? "the way its meant to be played"?) and support from all companies who sell things to gamers.
Gaming mouses/keyboards joysticks... every big hardware company has something for gamers. If they start producing working drivers for that section, the other products will follow.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #10140

Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #10140 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Although I hate when I read Ubuntu where it should be Linux instead, this still is a good idea.

+1

True, this could expand to Linux in general. I don't really care, as long as I get my .deb! (Or at least a game that has complete functionality with Wine, I'm not that much of a purist).

ok changing all "ubuntu" to "linux", although I think ubuntu is one of the few linux distributions with enough support and plug and play drivers WORKING to make it possible to release games to it in an EASY way (a file that can be installed fast and easy, not with allot of settings like "what is your system like?")

If it'll be compatible with Ubuntu, chances are it'll work on other linux distros too. I don't see the point in being picky and confusing everyone with the "proper" terms.

glibik wrote on the 21 Jun 08 at 23:52
Don't mean to be overly picky, Vadim, but unfortunately I am something of a pedant. I've always found that when everyone uses the proper term, there is a lot _less_ confusion. :D

Moving on from that, for the idea +1. For some comments, -0.

biggest problems with games is that most of them use directx. And those that use directx works well on windows only.. even if wine is used you dont get performance or you wont get the same experience... we want to play games not to just say it works...

On the otherhand almost all opengl games are either ported to linux or you can play them using wine.Even though there are good titles that use opengl, majority of the games are using DirectX...

So we can just dream to have this idea to be true.

@glibik,pek & syberjj
you are contradicting your self by just saying LINUX "its called GNU/LINUX... linux is just the kernel ...

syberjj wrote on the 22 Jun 08 at 17:34
fazillatheef - you are thinking like a guy that wants to import windows games to linux.
did u ever hear of directx for a PS3 or a nintendo Wii? no!
im not asking to import windows games to ubuntu! read the idea more carefully couse thats exactly what i'm against!

whats the point of importing a game made for a buggy OS into ubuntu? that way we only collect bugs from others.

I wanna say "I play on ubuntu" and make the companies make me some games for ubuntu.
Warcraft for Apples Mac doest use much direcx does it? ^_^

I think there are all sorts of free-signup petitions on the Internet. Why not just start one yourself?

syberjj wrote on the 25 Jun 08 at 22:18
exactly because there are "all sorts off" for all kind of things. If it was an official ubuntu page it would:
1- get the attention of all ubuntu users that might be interested
2- be used by the ubuntu team to send official data to big companies
3- be shown to companies that browse the ubuntu page. "our market share is THIS big. arent you interested?"

This page could also reflect other things in other areas. But I think that games and 3D CAD software are the sections where ubuntu/linux has absolutely no support (not enough to call it a working area)

Done: I_Want_It_On_Linux

Let the Ubuntu developers worry about Ubuntu. I have created a site that does exactly this for all us Linux fans out there. And in the spirit of Lixus, it's completely community-based. I used Brainstorm as my inspiration. :)

I know some Linux lobbies (or is it lobbiers?) and so will submit all the information gathered from the site to them so they can help promote the right games to the right people.

I currently don't have any submissions as I have just created the site.

You can help out by submitting and voting: http://www.iwantitonlinux.com/

oneawesomeguy, i like your page, and already registered.
but your page is counting votes for games that suers would like to have on ubuntu.
I am aiming for one place where the user can simply vote for "I play games and use ubuntu".
So at the end we have a huge number of votes all just simply showing "we all want games on ubuntu"

The link isn't working...

But it would be nice if the website was made in the ubuntustory.com fashion
