Description
I dont think Ekiga is used by many people, perhaps we should consider removing it from the cd in favour for other software or more drivers?
I made up a quickvote at the ubuntuforums to see if I was the only one not using Ekiga.
Check the thread posted here for information and discussion.

Possibly one of the reasons why Ekiga does not get used as much as it could, is not because of the program, but because of the lack of services that the user feels they can trust.
There is probably a higher correlation between linux users and desire for security & trust, than there is with "some" other OSes.
Users would be concerned about "who" is providing the service, and "what" they are doing with any information.
There is a suggestion that Ubuntu take an opportunity to provide the service that allows Ekiga to be used with a large degree of confidence.
http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/9984/
So there is the question, Would more people use Ekiga, if there were some better service providers? and What if Ubuntu provided the service under its wing?

Hi
Ekiga is one of the first programs that I uninstall - simply because all my buds use msn for online communication, so Pidgin is my app of choice.
cheers

According to the optional popularity contest, Ekiga is used by 13% of the people - that's more than enough to keep it in by default.
If you don't like it, feel free to remove for yourself, it's very easy to do. But your personal preference doesn't reflect everybody's.

How does the popularitycontest work? I remember reading somewhere that it showed the wrong results for those programs installed by default; sometimes gave them more popularity than it really had.
The results in the poll at ubuntuforums say that it is used by 8 of 100 people. If such low numbers should motivate an inclusion by default, a LOT of programs should be included by default.

I know that my personal preferences doesn't reflect everybody's. That is why I made up a vote at ubuntuforums and so far my personal preferences seem to reflect a lot of people (92%).

Yes, and 8% is a whole lot of people.
Not everyone uses Transmission either regularly. Or GIMP. Or the Character Map. Or the Audio CD extractor. Do you want to remove all of that too?
Ubuntu will always ship (in the opinion) the best program for a task. Ekiga was chosen because it was the best one that was acceptable to include in ubuntu (skype unfortunately is not acceptable).

popcon is misleading in a couple ways. Firstly, there's some selection bias. Users have to choose to enable it and have a network handy to report usage stats. In particular, this means you'll be undercounting people who don't have internet connections and are therefore uninterested in ekiga.
Secondly, using popcon to establish what should be installed by default causes a feedback loop. "Well its popular so we should keep it in. But it's only popular because it's installed by default!"

Right, so by your suggestion, you're suggesting that there's something else to be used instead. What is it?
(because you can't claim to remove it - people *do* use it, as popcon shows (the 'vote' ranking)).
And, you know, we might as well remove the update feature and add/remove. Just for people without internet access?

Other related technologies.
These are either available through add/remove or synaptic, or manual download and install.

iaxComm

Kiax
Linphone
Team Speak
Twinkle
Wengo Phone

I had checked out Pidgin some time back, but can not remember why I didn't install it (AMD64?).
Some of these work with more than one type of system, including msn. Some will also do video.
Some have lower latency than others.
There's some choice for those that want it.
A comparison table of pertinent features and performance would be handy.

I had a webcam plugged in unused for 18months. A couple days ago decided to try Ekiga, went thru the setup, almost all was 'next, next, next', signed up for a SIP address, easy, made test call, audio and video perfect. So easy, and it works. Should have tried it long time ago.
Ekiga is still under active development, it's constantly improving. Try it and give it a chance to grow.
Despite not having used it for so long, for the benefit of current and future users and the success of open-source I whole heartily support it.

@Vadmin P.
I didn't mean to give the impression that they others were "better" than Ekiga.
But they show there's other options to Pidgin - which I Had checked out, but hadn't used.
I regard Ekiga as a preferred system because it does video as mybunche has pointed out.
Exchange Servers ;
For MSN compatibility, there are SIP exchanges and Jabber exchanges which can connect users of one system to a number of others.
So you can either set up your own exchange server, or register with one that will do the translation, and you're in business.
