Notify user about failing HDD
Written by neokril the 24 Jan 12 at 19:23. Global category: Hardware support. New
Today I accidentally opened disk utility and found out that my HDD has bad sectors and big amount of IO errors. It would be nice if Ubuntu tell me bad news in time when it happens and write something in logs. Because this information is very important for me and now I even don't know when first bad block has appeared.

smartd daemon will write information about HDD fails in log. Also it can be configured to show some kind of notification to user.

SMS passthrough for Android Phones
Written by ketterer the 21 Mar 12 at 06:35. Related project: Unity. New
I am always working on my computer and miss SMS, I have my phone on my desk by my attention is on my computer. I would love to have an app with message menu integration that when I plug my phone in my computer presents notification and alows me to receive and respond to the text messages

The idea came from watching the ubuntu for android promos, there is a big difference though, we need to have some way to pass the info from the phone to the pc. either bluetooth, or usb.

Solution #1: Message menu integration and app
Written by ketterer the 21 Mar 12 at 06:35.
I think it would be a great idea if we had some sort of solution integrated into the messaging menu and notifications for SMS. As well as send and receive SMS, maybe in empathy or a separate client.

The ground work is around, an app called DesktopSMS works, but does not have any integration, nor does it look nice or feel good to use. This package uses ADB to communicate with the phone, and then an app on the phone supply the comparabilities needed.

Ubuntu for Android for non-techie users, without rooting your phone
Written by pelya the 27 Apr 12 at 16:33. Global category: Hardware support. New
Ubuntu needs a way to install onto non-rooted Android phones, simply by installing an app from Google Play.

There was a lot of fuss about Ubuntu on Android, and there's lot of text here: http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android it mostly advertises Ubuntu to cellphone manufacturers, but it misses one point - those guys are driven by money and business, and they are not interested in anything that does not show immediate profits (even if that's something as simple as rooting your device and unpacking tarfile). So, Ubuntu needs an app, a simple app that non-techies can install on a phone with a single click, and it needs to get some resonance among users (1 million downloads would do). Only then manufacturers will recognize Ubuntu as a market trend and a business opportunity, and will possibly make dual-boot phones, because Ubuntu support will bring immediate profit in their eyes.

There are already several Ubuntu installers for rooted phones, they are not insanely popular though, I guess because of the root requirement.

Solution #1: Fakechroot
Written by pelya the 27 Apr 12 at 16:33.
In fact, I've already created such an app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cuntubuntu
sources are here: https://github.com/pelya/cuntubuntu
and I would like community to continue the development effort (at least remove swearword from app package name).

It's achieved by using fakechroot, and of course it's buggy like hell. The mouse and keyboard are highly advised, but not required (Galaxy Note' stylus substitutes mouse quite well).

Alternatively, we may try to wrap some popular applications with no alternatives on Android, like Gimp or Libreoffice, into minimal fakechrooted Linux environment, however that stuff can only be installed into internal phone storage (not SD card), which is usually very limited, so 2-3 of them will eat all free space.

Solution #1: Streaming video driver
Written by cslee-ubuntu the 20 Feb 12 at 21:45.
A kernel driver offering a virtual graphics card that X or any other display software could be configured to use as a display.

This would then be available on a port on the network interface (depending on the configured format) for modern multimedia televisions to access and stream the content over the network.
