Deskbar with a bar!
Written by Migi the 2 Nov 08 at 14:49. New
Right now, my top panel is very empty. There's a lot of screen real estate that remains unused. And you know what I'd expect there?

A bar.
Something to type in.

And we already have that: the deskbar applet. However, the actual bar only pops up after clicking it.
That's of course ok if you want to save space, but there definitely should be an option to integrate the whole thing in the taskbar like the "dictionary" and "address" applets do.

A default system of widgets for ubuntu
Written by alpikat the 6 Jul 08 at 15:07. New
Put a system of widgets like the gadgets of Windows Vista or Mac OS X widgets, installed as standard on the operating system ready for use when the installation finishes.
The program could be based on the source of gdesklets.
If implemented the idea would be good to be compatible with the widgets of google and gdesklets; and also would have their own native widgets for the program.

Solution #2: Google Gadgets for Linux
Written by tk03759 the 11 Mar 09 at 03:01.
Google Gadgets for Linux are very stable and have a fair base of widgets already built in my opinion. If they were configured to work with Compiz's Widget Layer, and also with the option to lay them on the desktop, they would be a great default.

Make gDesklets (and other widgets) disappear when mouse is over them
Written by cousteau the 3 Apr 09 at 21:53. New
gDesklets (and other widgets) provide a nice look and feel, but when you work with a fullscreened window, the widgets are hidden by that window, or the widgets are on top covering the window so you can't use certain buttons on it.

Solution #1: Widget fades out on hover
Written by cousteau the 3 Apr 09 at 21:53.
Make the widget have three modes: "on top", "on bottom" and "fade". The latter would show the widget on top but fade it out when the mouse is over it, thus allowing to use the underlying buttons.

Solution #2: Hole on widget
Written by cousteau the 3 Apr 09 at 22:00.
Instead of fading out the whole widget, just display a hole on it.

Solution #3: Set a hotkey to turn widegt layer on/off
Written by stochastic the 3 Apr 09 at 23:15.
Mac OSX uses this technique, I even seem to recall this ability already in gDesklets back when I was using them, but maybe I'm mistaken.

Simply using F9 or some other hotkey to turn the widget layer on and off will take care of this problem.
