Written by Rodrigo the 12 Apr 09 at 17:08. New
I do a lot of offline navigation, and I print in pdf, to take with me.
when I try to print webs in .pdf they cut the web in pages, cutting sometimes images, tables.
I would like that to change.

Solution #1: Offer the option to print as one page .pdf
Written by Rodrigo the 12 Apr 09 at 17:08.
Like old printers we should be able to print in a continuous page. That way the image, tables and the rest will not be cut.

Thinner bookmarks bar in the toolbar in Firefox
Written by Mikael I the 4 Dec 08 at 19:06. New
I run Ubuntu on my laptop. The screen is small and therefore all space on the screen is precious, especially when I surf the web.

One thing that bothers me about Firefox in Ubuntu is the bookmark toolbar. It is unnecessarily thick. It's much thinner in XP for example. It's only a bunch of little icons and some text, there's no need for it to be as big as it is.

You can easily cut a few pixels off to get more web space and better looks.

A way to customize how thick it is in Pixels would be great!

Solution #1: Make a "Add Search to your Search Bar" Page with Searches with Partner Links
Written by anzeige the 27 Nov 09 at 09:13.
Create a Page whith a List of addable Searches (like Amazon.com) you can add to your Firefox Browser. (e.g. https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/12633 )

The Trick is: Shops like Amazon provides a Partner Program (e.g. https://affiliate-program.amazon.com ). So when someone search something with that Ubuntu can earn some money. This isn't much, but when you create for that a special Page and say Users: "Hey, when you use this Search, we can earn a little bit more money for development" I think most users will use the Search instead browsing the Pages directly.

Make (g)email safer for the world!
Written by kramer65 the 22 Oct 08 at 09:21. New
It seems that email is a very very unsafe mode of communication. Although I don't have any world domination plans as yet, I would like to keep my things private from intruding governments as well as companies.

I've been looking a bit around and it seems that there is a lot possible, but that it's just very fragmented; GPG and FireGPG together with some extra functionalities would help us get started.

What if you created one package out of Seahorse/GPA/KGPG and FireGPG which after installation had the following functionalities for for example gmail (more email programs should follow);
- The first time you start it up, a key-pair is being made for your email address. The public key is automatically uploaded to the PGP Global Directory which then verifies the email adres with a verification email.
- When you send an email it automatically looks in the Global Directory whether the person you send the email has a public key and if it finds one, it automatically encrypts and sends the message. Also it automatically signs the email using your private key.
- When you receive an encrypted message, it automatically unencrypts it and checks the signatures using the Global Directory.

Using a system like this would get many people to use it since it is not so complicated anymore and just one package. The more people post public keys, the more it gets accepted by other email programs while it doesn't interrupt the current flow of emails since you can still send normal emails as well.

If you think intruding governments are taking a bit too much away from our privacy these days, please vote UP!

Better print preview panel in firefox 3
Written by stinger30au the 19 Aug 08 at 10:27. New
in firefox 3 when you do a print preview it will show you all frames put together. you should be able to select what frame you want via a drop down box.

this is a very handy feature because at this point in time a number of web sites i want to print from i have to create a pdf file first and downscale the print size to say 50% and play with the values a few times till it looks right. once it is correct then i can print it to my printer for a hard copy.

very much a time saver if this feature could be implemented

thanks

Install localized search plugins in Firefox automatically
Written by oencke the 1 Jun 08 at 03:46. New
When the default language of Ubuntu is changed Firefox should also be localized automatically and the search plugins should be redirected to their local sites if available. This is especially true for Amazon, eBay, Wikipedia and the likes, since searching in oversea auctions and shop articles doesn't make much sense most of the time.

Sadly for the standard search plugins there isn't even a localized variant available on the mozilla site, you can only get them when you download and install the full localized firefox package directly from mozilla.org. So they do exist but aren't available seperately. At the moment the only possibility is to hack the provided english plugins or dl and dissect a full localized firefox package.

Please include these plugins in the mozilla-firefox-locale-xx packages and install/apply them when the language is changed.

Browser AP checker
Written by mishaokami the 15 Feb 12 at 22:32. New
I use my laptop WIFI at many hotels and on many airlines/buses/trains yearly.

Upon first use many of these APs subvert the resolution of the URL (without saving it) that you want to go to, and redirect you to their authentication site which makes you agree to a EULA before access is granted.

Problem is, if i start firefox with 20 tabs open, all 20 get subverted and i lose their addresses.

I have lost hours of research this way.

Solution #1: Browser AP checker
Written by mishaokami the 15 Feb 12 at 22:32.
Have an optional check button in the prefs, that performs a test before loading all the tabs like (but not exclusive to) going to https://google.com.

If the cert fails (because the IP is subverted to a hotel IP for instance), you can assume you have to click on a EULA first, after which all your tabs will load.

Solution #2: Firefox add-in

This would be more appropriately a firefox add-in than part of firefox trunk or Ubuntu.

Solution #3: Use another browser
Written by teeks99 the 18 Feb 12 at 11:42.
If you connect to an unknown access point that may send you to a landing page, open a page in another browser like epiphany.

From Menu "Edit | Preferences":

Goto "General" tab and check "Don't load tabs until selected"

Solution #5: Network manager should do the check when the connection is made
Written by HDave the 5 Mar 12 at 14:11.
This issue has nothing to do with the browser per se. It will also happen if you connect to the AP and then try to use SSH or other network protocols. It also has nothing specific to do with Firefox because Chromium and any other tabs based browser also has this same problem.

It would be nice if I could flag certain SSID's as needing explicit acceptance. Then when the network manager connects to an AP that is flagged as needing acceptence it runs a simple test and if it fails, then it either displays this new status (see comment here: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/29306/), triggers a notification, or pops up its own browser based dialog for you to deal with the issue (click on the EULA, put in your credit card number, enter your hotel room, etc.)

I'm not saying I know how to implement this, I'm just saying that it should happen right after the network manager connects....before you even get the chance to fire up the browser.

Check extension compatibility before updating Firefox
Written by dotancohen the 29 Nov 08 at 13:59. New
Ubuntu should check which extensions are not compatible with a new version of Firefox before updating Firefox. FIrefox disables incompatible extensions when it is updated. For some users it is more important to be running a particular extension than to be running the latest greatest Firefox. The user should be warned that any particular extension may not work in the new version, and be given an option whether or not to upgrade Firefox.

FireFox Add-On PicLens Needs a Linux Version
Written by teeteebahbah the 6 Aug 08 at 18:28. New
The FireFox Add-on Piclens is only available for Windows and Mac Users. FireFox Add-On PicLens Needs a Linux Version.

Piclens is AWESOME!!! It is probably the best and most useful ADD-On for at least myself and my use of FireFox. The best way to describe Picslens is view the demo on their website.

www.PicLens.com

From their website here is a brief description:

"Full-Screen, 3D -- PicLens transforms your browser into a visually stunning experience for finding and viewing online photos and videos. Our "3D Wall" lets you effortlessly search and zoom your way around thousands of images, videos, news feeds, sports feeds, and more."

I've already contacted the company that does PicLens. They responded by telling me that they fully support Linux in general but have not been able so far to create a Linux version.. They are concentrating on making PicLens as stable as possible for the Windows and Mac platforms. They hope to have a Linux version eventually.

If you want a Linux version of PicLens, please vote favorably. I believe its safe to say the developers at PicLens may well also be Ubuntu Brainstorm members like you and I.
