F-Spot import improvements
Written by PiHalbe the 21 Sep 08 at 18:11. Not an idea
The F-Spot import window is confusing. As soon as a folder is selected it will start importing without any confirmation from the user. Every now and then I accidentally select my hard drive from the list, which results in F-Spot scanning the entire hard-drive and copying photos, screenshots, comics and other stuff wildly.

Also, natural workflow is from top to bottom. So I would like to be able to select the folder first and then decide whether or not to copy the files, attach tags, etc.

So please, have a confirmation button to start importing.

Selecting photos in F-Spot
Written by mydoghasworms the 26 May 09 at 19:27. Not an idea
Although it is possible to select multiple photos in F-Spot (using Ctrl-click) for a single operation like emailing, it becomes difficult when your collection is very large (like hundreds of photos).

Solution #1: Add a photo tray to F-Spot
Written by mydoghasworms the 26 May 09 at 19:27.
Add a photo tray to F-Spot, where you can drag photos, on which you can then perform an action (email, create new online album, etc.)

This is a poor mockup. I imagine you would have an extra button to clear the tray:

This feature is also mentioned here:

Solution #2: Add a checkbox next to each photo
Written by mydoghasworms the 26 May 09 at 19:47.
I've seen this feature on those machines where you print photos. This way you can make the selection and not have to worry about losing your selection when clicking anywhere without Ctrl. Again, I think extra buttons (clear selection, select all/none) would come in handy somewhere.

Solution #3: Combination of #1 and #2
Written by mydoghasworms the 27 May 09 at 05:35.
When you select photos in #2, it would still be nice for all the selected photos to show up in a tray (#1), so that you can see your selection at a glance, because scrolling through many pages of photos to see what has been selected is quite cumbersome.

Improve gThumb image viewer; make it default photo manager/organizer
Written by sancho panza the 28 Feb 08 at 23:46. Won't implement
F-Spot is a relatively clumsy photo-manager. Some issues are:
1) It completely ignores my organization of photos into folders and imposes its own schemes and tries to make a duplicate copy of all photos to "import" it into the F-spot collection. Why can't the organizer respect the organization that the user already has and build up on that?
2) Image rendering is noticably slower than gThumb. Each image takes some time to fully rendered/are fuzzy.
3) In full screen mode, I'm forced to have some form of transition effect between images and the slideshow is jittery, including the fullscreen toolbar.
4) When I delete pics from outside (say, Nautilus), it doesnt autoremove pics from db the next time I run it.
5) F-spot manager does not open when image is opened from Nautilus.

gThumb is so much better in all these aspects. Moreover, you can also choose to work with your collection in Nautilus if you feel like, without having to open the photo manager every time you need to touch your photos.

Solution #3: Add more features to F-spot problems and improve base
Written by LioBino the 28 Oct 09 at 15:09.
F-spot is not a bad program, just a program that is incomplete. The program needs more functionality in terms of image editing and applying filters and scaling. F-spot needs to respect also the organization of the photos from users, folders and others. It would be great if f-spot automatically scan the photos found in the user's personal folder.

Fix sections of photographs using similar photos online
Written by Auzy the 7 Oct 08 at 07:38. New
A research team from CMU came up with a way to repair photos by patching missing/dodgy sections with similar ones from other photos.

I propose we build it into our photo tools so that users are able to automatically fix their pictures in a natural looking way automatically. Granted they may end up with a few foreign trees in the photo, or the shoes might not match at the end, but users would not be able to determine the real photo.

Neither OSX nor windows seems to do this yet, but it has many practical applications. More information is available here:

F-Spot should not touch files unless told so by user
Written by PiHalbe the 21 Sep 08 at 18:06. New
When I import my photos to F-Spot it always changes the time in the EXIF-information. Every single file is edited. F-Spot should not do this, since it is importing, not modifying, which I ordered. I did not find any way to prevent it from doing so. Not even setting the files read-only.

Fix importing tags from Windows Live Gallery
Written by orzoweitop the 21 Sep 08 at 17:25. New
I have a system with windows xp and ubuntu. In windows I use Windows Live Gallery to organize all my photos using tags. When I import all my photos with f-spot, the program shows for example:

Family/Peter/Party

But when I put the tags in Windows Live Gallery, tags appear like this:

Family
|_Peter
|__Party

Please, fix this issue in future versions.

Solution #2: Make sure that f-spot sticks to the standard

Make sure that f-spot sticks to the standard.
If it still does not work Live Gallery must be fixed to stick to the standard

If you want to see your F-Spot gallery, you can't just right-click and autoresize the pics to full-screen.
