easy mail archiving and reading archives in evolution
Written by trylik the 21 Aug 08 at 23:41. Not an idea
i dont know if there is such an option

but after a few moths my inbox folder have about 2GB, it would be realy great if i could store folder easily - burn to DVD etc

it should be easy to access - just right click on folder and choose "archive" option, this should create one file (if larger then 4GB, automaticlly splitted into pieces)

also there should be an option to archive all of messages

there should be also an optioon to choose date range - usually we need "fresh" mail

there sould also be an option to choose only one account, or many (if you use evolution with many mailboxes)

after burning then, they should disappear from evolution,

there should be an option to read this archive - directyl from archive file - archived messages should be accessible just as normal mail

there also should be an option to import mail archive pernamently - putting them back in mailbox files

this functionallity would also improve evolution speed

Permanently delete just one message (evolution mail)
Written by kboite the 25 Nov 08 at 16:27. New
I've not found this feature in Evolution:

I want to be able to permanently delete one message with just SHIFT + DEL or to delete permanently one message by clicking right on it in the trash folder (without having to empty the trash / deleting all mails in it).

Solution #2: Provide a checkbox in "Mail Preferences" to enable/disable this feature.
Written by blueadept the 23 Dec 09 at 12:04.
There are already options related to delete behaviour in the settings as follows:-

"Empty wastebasket folders on exit"
&
"Confirm when expunging a folder"

I suggest adding an extra checkbox to enable permanent delete with shift-delete.

Solution #3: enable selective deleting within Trash folder (with confirmation)
Written by brt the 1 Jul 11 at 14:45.
important:
it must be possible to delete selected messages within the trash folder like you do in any folder, eg. by hitting DEL or rightclick-context-menu

optional:
you have to confirm that your messages will be deleted permanently.

SHIFT + DEL should also popup the confirmation

there could be an option within the "Mail Preferences" which lets you deactivate this confirmation.

alltogether this would make permanent deleting of messages flawlessly, very intuitive and userfriendly

Solution #2: LDAP and EDS don't cut it, let's mimic Address Book.app
Written by davejacobs the 29 Jun 10 at 04:13.
LDAP is too involved for your average Ubuntu user. Maybe some of us *could* figure it out, but for what you gain, it might not be worth it for many people.

EDS does not feel like Linux, in that it's not an orthogonal, compact, separate entity that all applications can feel comfortable referring to.

Apple's Address Book is a decent example of what Gnome needs for this task: it's minimal and universal. It syncs with the cloud. It allows some flexibility with information permitted. And it can export to vCard format.

It would be fantastic if there was a separate minimalist application that acted as a server/databse for contacts across all of Gnome, or perhaps all Debian-based systems.

Akonadi could be promising but is making me install KDE-related files.

Include Mail Notification in Jaunty by default
Written by Ubuwu the 28 Sep 08 at 14:01. Won't implement
Mail Notification monitors your mailboxes for new mail. When new mail arrives, Mail Notification alerts you by displaying an icon in the notification area. Moreover, a mail summary an be displayed in the icon tooltip, a sound can be played, and notifications containing useful action buttons can be popped up.

One of the goals of Jaunty is the blurring of web services and desktop applications. This is an easy chance to integrate email into the desktop, no matter if it is webbased or not. Mail notifier supports everything from yahoo, gmail and hotmail to evolution and thunderbird, blurring the line between webmail and desktop email applications.

Available from the repositories: apt:mail-notification

Evolution makes you sound too formal when mailing your contacts.
Written by Dave Jeffery the 21 Nov 08 at 07:45. New
When I send a mail to my Dad, Evolution insists on sending it to "Mr Richard John Jeffery". When I want to send a mail to my friend Kif, it insists on sending a mail to "Mr. Christopher Bowden-Smith".

This is loopy. You should be able to right click on the "To:" field and choose how you want the To: contact to appear.

Sometimes when sending a mail to a few people, being formal is appropriate. At other times it isn't - you should get the choice each mail to use the full name, nickname, include the title, etc.

Notification when DST time changes automatically happen
Written by hunt.topher the 2 Nov 08 at 19:22. New
Daylight Savings Time time changes happen automatically on Ubuntu - which is a pleasant addition, but it would be even more pleasant to have a popup notification of this for two reasons:
1) We get positive, explicit acknowledgement of DST by the system. This adhere's to the ideal of keeping the computer's operations completely transparent to the user.
2) We get a reminder about DST so that we can change any analog clocks.

Evolution: Option to Collapse All IMAP Accounts into a Single "Virtual" Account
Written by _alex_ the 22 Apr 08 at 19:28. New
I have 5 different IMAP accounts. Setting up search folders to aggregate email from the Inboxes/Junk/Drafts/Sent/Trash is a painfully slow process. Even more annoyingly, selecting an IMAP Inbox folder causes Evolution to check the mail, but not so for an aggregated Inbox search folder.

Evolution should provide a one-click option to collapse the IMAP/POP accounts into a single "Virtual" Account with one inbox, one junk folder, etc. Furthermore, the default action should be to place Junk/Sent/Deleted into the corresponding folder on the corresponding IMAP account rather than into a local folder. Evolution should ask to create the folder structure if it's not already present on the server (or intelligently guess the folders if it is---with a confirmation dialog for the user).

As is already implemented, when replying the correct account should be selected. Thus, essentially all operations are done within each email account, but to the user this appears as a single "virtual" account.

use Evolution without email account
Written by Lex the 12 Aug 08 at 15:52. New
There is wizard on Evolution's first start, that forces users to enter all email details. There should be option to create basic account without email, because some people want to use just calendar and contact functionality.

Either Fix or Warn about the 2 GB Limit on Mailboxes with Evolution
Written by guywithcable the 6 Oct 08 at 01:53. New
I switched my mom over to Ubuntu a couple months ago and I have already had to rescue her email 2 times. The problem is when a folder in Evolution surpasses 2 GB, Evolution can't access it anymore. Evolution allows this without any warning and then that folder stops working without any information. The end user ends up lost and doesn't know how to recover the 2+ GB of email that is now inaccessible. There is a program called archivemail in the universe repository that will let a user archive mail stored in MBOX format. I've had to use this to recover my mom's email.

Evolution should warn the user to archive their mail before it goes past the 2 GB limit. An even more user friendly approach would be to automatically archive email folders for the user. Of course, Evolution could also be fixed to allow more than 2 GB in a folder.

Please fix this as it drives my mother and ultimately me nuts every time it happens. I can't imagine how many other people have run into this and don't know how to recover from it.

Improve Ubuntu One with some extra Features like Password Sync, Configurations Sync, maybe even Themes and so on ...
Everything you want to sync should be optional.
