Dolphin service menus and preview
Written by Zorba the 22 Dec 10 at 17:28. New
Dolphin has a lot of really useful service menus and preview plugin... why not install them by default?
For example the packages:
kde-menu-service-fuseiso: allows to mount an iso image
kde-menu-service-audiokonverter: convert an audio file
kde-menu-service-rootactions: run actions as superuser
kde-thumbnailer-openoffice: shows preview of openoffice documents
kde-thumbnailer-audiothumbs: shows the cover of a music album
kffmpegthumbnailer: shows preview of videos

Actually these packages are present in the ppa:samrog131/ppa repository. There are also others service menus that are useful, like:

Solution #1: Install those plugins by default
Written by Zorba the 22 Dec 10 at 17:28.
Simply install those plugins in the default Kubuntu disc, so every Kubuntu installation will be ready to use them.

thumbnail retreival slow and effectively prevents selection until done
Written by betlog the 24 Aug 10 at 16:02. New
EDIT:The problematic issue seems to be exclusively in Dolphin. I do not, for example, find it a problem with gthumb
RELATED: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/25678/

When loading a folder that has a large number of images, the presentation of the thumbnails always takes a long time, and until they are all loaded the sequence of the images constantly changes; making selection almost impossible.

I suspect the problem is that thumbnails are always retrieved in a "sort by name" sequence. But if the folder is sorted "by date, descending" the mismatch between the two creates a rather long wait state for the user before they can click an image.
This is particularly annoying in situations where the user is opening a web browser "file upload" dialog to upload a single image file.

Solution #1: thumbnail retreival should be sequenced by folder sort order
Written by betlog the 24 Aug 10 at 16:02.
If the thumbnails were *retrieved in the same sorting order as the folder being loaded*, then the first few images/first page of images should load before images that may never be looked at.

ie: if the folder displayed in dolphin is set to "sort by date, descending, show folders first", then this is the sequence in which thumbnail images should be retrieved.
So as to ensure that the current page of thumbnails is visible as quickly as possible. Specifically when using display-sorting methods other than "by name"

Features lacking in current Dolphin/Nautilus
Written by NinjaNumberNine the 15 Aug 10 at 15:12. New
Note: Perhaps this has been added in nautilus, I am using KDE at present, and its version of nautilus may be old (2.30.1).

Suffice it to say, this is an elusive (at best) feature that i really miss from Windows. It had an option when you right-clicked an image file, to 'Set as Background' or similar. In Dolphin and Nautilus, there are no options for 'setting as desktop background'. I know that there is a plugin for nautilus to allow this, but the end user wouldn't know of it. And in KDE, you just about have to use the 'Desktop Activity Settings' module to change your wallpaper. Even Gwenview lacks this option... while M$ Picture and Fax Viewer has it. The current 'desktop settings' apps in gnome and kde have only the option to import images one by one. It would be useful to allow importing an entire folder, that the program would find all the image files from, and show them in the list.

Sorry to rant, I love all the *buntus, it's just a small issue anyhow.

Solution #1: Add a simple entry to the right-click menu for images
Written by NinjaNumberNine the 15 Aug 10 at 15:12.
Perhaps, for Ubuntu, just make the 'nautilus-wallpaper' package installed by default by the LiveCD/system update.
Or for Kubuntu, add to dolphin 'Right click Image file -> Set as Wallpaper' as there doesn't seem to be a plugin package available.
(NOTE: it appears that in KDE 4.4 they have added a function to enable dropping an image file on the Plasma desktop, and setting it as wallpaper. However, this is still lacking, for instance in cases where the desktop is completely submerged in windows, and there is no space to drop the image.)

Set icons for specific files
Written by gameguy95 the 9 Mar 10 at 01:15. New
i have seen that you can set icons for files with specific extensions, yet, as a user who is still warming up to ubuntu,i miss the feature in windows where you could go in the settings of a file and change the icon for just that specific file without having to have every file that has that specific name with that specific icon (for example have a file in my home folder titled Test.ext with icon 1 and another file in my documents folder with the same name using icon 2.) i noticed you could do this with folders but would truly appreciate the ability to do this with individual files.

Solution #1: Change the icon system
Written by gameguy95 the 9 Mar 10 at 01:15.
edit the icon system so that, under the settings, you have the ability to change the icon for the individual file and not neccesarily any files with the same name and/or extension

Solution #2: add file icons to the .directory
Written by gameguy95 the 10 Mar 10 at 07:38.
the .directory file contains the icons for folders right? why not add the icons for files into that?

Solution #3: make a .icons file
Written by gameguy95 the 10 Mar 10 at 07:44.
we have a .directory file for icons for folders, why not make a .icons (or other similar name) that would allow us to set icons on individual files inside a folder.

pyRename as part of Dolphin
Written by incredion the 9 Sep 09 at 11:28. New
I often work with files and directories with Dolphin and have the need to rename a lot of files in the same manner.
pyRename is e.g. a nice tool for that, easy to use and with powerful features.
However, it sucks to just go to the k-menu, open pyRename, navigate it to the directory that I have already open in Dolphin, and then, finally be able to start renaming.

Solution #1: pyRename as part of Dolphin
Written by incredion the 9 Sep 09 at 11:28.
As Dolphin is a file-manager, I suggest to implement the pyRenamer functions as part of Dolphin, in the same way, as you can open a konsole view using F4, you should be able to enter the mass-rename-toolbox similar to pyRename by pressing F10 or another hotkey.

Dolphin already has mass-rename tools. You can just highlight and rename them.

People do not read what they have bookmarked, or downloaded
Written by danielloizos the 4 Sep 09 at 14:26. New
Scenario: a student is given a list of book marks to work his way through for a course. He sits at his browser and looks through that list, and bookmarks as many of them as he can "for later". He might also download a large quantity of documents to read "later" too. The chance of him actually looking at either the bookmarked webpages or downloaded documents is quite slim. The internet is only useful, if the student actually knuckles down and works though the documents.

Solution #1: Introduce a document management system/workflow management system
Written by danielloizos the 4 Sep 09 at 14:26.
In comes a document management system of sorts, on Ubuntu. It could have the following work flows:
1. download file/setup bookmark
2. read, and record what has been read during a sitting (in terms of pages of document or website)
3. note talking, analysis stages
4. filing of completed bookmarks and read documents
5. filing of notes, photos, audio, visual documentation taken during the process.
6. next document, bookmark
7. repeat.

Workflows 1-7 are repeated over and over again, with the key aim being that the student can see in some way how far along the work flow he is for a link, document or what ever.
Importantly the reading gets done, the notes get taken, the student learns in a concrete way, rather than just floating along on the internet.

Without wanting to quote Microsoft - they have products that can do bits a pieces of this: OneNote, and MS Project. OneNote manages notes, links and so on, and project manages tasks to some degree. Git and Subversion offer something like this, but from a programming perspective.

Advanced Copy Function 'Copy with path' (Dolphin)
Written by incredion the 4 Sep 09 at 07:29. New
I often want to copy one or more files that reside deep in a directory tree in different subdirs and keep the whole directory structure even on the destination path.
But the destination path should only hold the specific files i wanted to copy, not all that are on the source path, so I cannot simply copy the whole dir.

Solution #1: Advanced Copy Function 'Copy with path' (Dolphin)
Written by incredion the 4 Sep 09 at 07:29.
Dolphin should have a 'Advanced Copy'>'Copy With Path' function, that does exactly that. You select the files you want to copy and do 'Copy With Path' and on the destination dir your selected files are placed into the same dir substructure as on the source path.

File selection in File Managers (like Dolphin) is stone-age
Written by incredion the 4 Sep 09 at 07:25. New
So far, you can only select files from one directory at a time.
However I often intend to copy/move/delete/whatever more than one files from a complex directory tree structure at once. Also files that reside in differrent subdirs.
I do not want to copy the whole subdir! I do not want to copy them in several steps. I want to select these files that reside in several subdirs in one step and copy them in one job.
(this combined to the Advanced Copy Function 'Copy With Path' makes it very easy to selectively copy path/file structures to other disks, external media, players etc. e.g.)

Solution #1: 'Flat File View' for Dolphin
Written by incredion the 4 Sep 09 at 07:25.
Dolphin should have a simple checkbox on top/bottom/side/whereever of a shown directory that, if clicked 'on', shows the files of the current directory, all subdirectories and all files in that subdirectories completely flat as they were in one directory. (some foto-managers have that feature but it makes sense to general filemanagers also)

If you want it really crazy, it could have a functionality to select
1. the number of directory levels i digs down (all, 1, 2, ...) until it stops showing the files therein
2. if only a limited number should be shown, you should be able to select, if this selection should be counted from top, bottom, or some directory level(s) in between
