Intro
==========
rpms abound some web sites, and it is easy for a new user to end up downloading them of debs, it is also probable there won't be .debs available where .rpms are.
Changes to nautilus-gnome
=========================
* Associate .rpm with gdebi
Changes to gdebi
================
* If the file is an rpm prompt the user "Are you sure this is the only available binary package? / Are you sure there is no equivalent .deb file?"
* If user says "yes, I am sure" proceed.
* If alien is not installed, prompt the user if he wants to install it, if the user wants to install alien, install and proceed.
* Call alien to process the rpm file.

I suggest the desktop themes to be saved in a folder shared between users to allow them to share the created themes and give ability to easily set one theme for a number of users.

I've got a 1 Gb USB storage with an 800 Mb file on it.
When I want to copy an updated version of this file (same name), Nautilus warn me that the operation can't be done cause there is not enought space on the disk.
So I have to manualy erase the old file, empty the trashcan, and finaly copy the new file.
Therefore I suggest that Nautilus check files name when coping or moving operations BEFORE complaining about having not enought space left. (and then simply ask if we want to replace/rename/cancel)

Extend possibilities of wifi networks

Social networks are very popular nowadays, but computers are very individual, we don't use possibilities of wifi cards in our notebooks.
I want go to my friend with notebook, she easily share her internet connection through wifi from her adsl/lan internet.
I want easy communicate, share files, talk with her through our wifi connection.
I want come to school, make small ad-hoc wifi network with my colleagues, play games, share with them my data, communicate, make temporary small chat room... Someone add internet to our wlan, through mobile.
In old times, we make small/big lan parties, why there isn't wlan parties ? I know internet is faster, but we can share without internet.
It means:
* easy connect ad-hoc with other devices (notebooks with whatever OS, smart phone (Windows mobile, symbian, iphone)
* easy choose ipadress, easy create dhcp-server
* easy create bridge to share internet connection
* easy create rules of connection (firewall)
In future
* easy make ad-hoc wlan
* easy communication through wlan, maybe ad-hoc jabber networks

Full-time developers

Canonical should hire at least one full-time developer for X.org and GNOME.
X Server 1.4.1 was delayed by 212 days. X is used by pretty much every distribution, and not only Linux also other operating systems, so it is a very important package. We need the bugs fixed, such as EDID. We need new features such as input hotness, XKB 2, Xi 2 and MPX, etc.
Zenwalk Linux have a Xorg developer, we should have at least one too.
GNOME is also one of the most important packages in Ubuntu, and we should have a developer for it too, so we can make Ubuntu more powerful, functional and friendly.

Currently, the gnome-panel uses an insane amount of RAM. Some users have reported it using up to 110mb of RAM! We cannot let something so small be such a huge memory hog!
(Note: This idea is different to #368 - excessive ram usage as this is an idea for a specific issue)

Easy way to turn on/off bluetooth

One of the suggestions powertop (a tool that helps to save battery power) told me is to turn off my notebook's bluetooth when it is not being used.
"Disable the unused bluetooth interface with the following command:
hciconfig hci0 down; rmmod hci_usb"
I think it would be nice to have a way to turn off/on bluetooth graphically using bluetooth applet.

Some newer netbooks might come out with a multi-touch screen, and it would be a good idea to support this feature. The best way to do this is to include mpx when it becomes stable. Also, provide a way to use multi-touch gestures on supported hardware.

It's not a secret that industry is pushing new technologies based on touch interfaces (multitouch in iPhone/Macbook Pro; fist details on Windows 7...).
This means that big computer manufacturers (dell, hp, lenovo...) will be pushed by the market to introduce more and more devices at affordable prices that supports this emerging (and sucessful!) way of interacting with computers.
Soon keybord and mouse will be just at archaeology museums... and I hope Ubuntu will be not with them, plenty of dust beside examples of cuneiform script :(

Default permission should allow the use of scanner

I checked my permissions in "Users and Groups" and noticed that I do have permission to use a dial-up modem to connect to the internet and access floppy and CD-ROM drives, but I do not have permission to use the scanner.
Why is this? It does not make sense.
Add the use of scanner to default permission.

Files should be updated when swap partition(s) are changed

When a swap partition is moved, resized or formatted, its UUID as shown in 'sudo blkid' changes.
However, the strings in /etc/fstab and /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume are not updated.
This creates a number of problems including:
- Swap is off by default, and cannot be turned on by 'sudo swapon -a'.
- The system will not hibernate, since it does not find the swap space.
- Usplash on bootup is only shown on the bouncing bar stage, then text is displayed.
I propose that when a swap partition is changed, /etc/fstab and /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume are automatically updated, and initramfs is updated with 'sudo update-initramfs -u -k all'.

Completely Random Ideas on front page

I think that the front page should be dedicated random ideas, thus giving publicity to old bugs for lazy people.
I have seen some great ideas by going through the trenches of old ideas that I know just didn't get enough publicity.
I have a couple myself that need implemented.

There should be a caps-lock warning everywhere, where any manual typing of passwords is required. This way you wont mistype it accidentally leaving the caps-lock on.
