better DVD support
Written by diophant the 29 Feb 08 at 01:14. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
DVD support is still not so easy to get, due to
content scrambling. Scripts like automatix provide
this relatively easily, but it could not hurt to have
a straightforward path to get DVD playback support.
Stick in a DVD, and it plays. DVD players could also become
simpler. I use xine or mplayer but it would be nice to have
the simplicity of the DVD player in OS X.

New users coming from Windows are often disoriented and don't really know the real advantages of Ubuntu or even how to use some of its basic functions (Add/Remove instead of setup.exe). An orientation would help them.

A couple of ideas for how to help them have come up, including an idea about having pop-ups for every new application that's open. The pop-up idea has a few downsides, of course, not the least of which being that pop-ups are annoying to many users, both new and experienced.

One relatively unobtrusive way to introduce new users to the basic functions of Ubuntu is to show a slideshow during the installation process. New users would probably watch the slideshow (they're waiting for the installation to finish--what else are they going to do?), while experienced users might have the option to turn off the slideshow... or they may just get up and leave, knowing that the installation won't take more than fifteen minutes.

Developer comments
A slideshow during the installer is planned for 8.10

Bug&CrashManager
Written by apogee the 29 Feb 08 at 17:00. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I am not always online when an app crashes, so the crash report is lost. Ditto with when I locate a bug that I want to report. An app to manage and explore the history of crashes and bug reports on my local machine would be fantastic.

I would also like the explorer to group the reports by history of crashed apps, nature of crash, type of bug, frequency of crash, etc.

Sync the un-submitted crashes and bug reports to respective vendors when next I am online. And check for responses to bugs, download and view later.

I don't know what the infrastructure for this would be, but bear with me.

Allow users to run a program in the background that tracks processes, threads, memory allocation etc. (there would obviously be some overhead for this so you would want to make this something you turn on and off).

Then when there is a "crash" (for example a KDE segfault), the system records all the information (and relevant log files etc.) and allows the user to make some quick comments about what they were trying to do. Then the information would be sent to a canonical server and put in a database.

This would allow better bug reporting (with more information and with questions like "what were you doing?" and "what did you expect would happen?") as well as providing a database with a lot of data for determining what programs are causing the most problems and what bugs are the most severe.

This would encourage best practices for bug reporting as well as allow people to file bu reports in a simpler way.

Add the ability to attach multiple threads and bugs in Brainstorm
Written by zeker the 18 Mar 08 at 21:48. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Be able to attach multiple threads and bugs if they apply to an idea in Brainstorm.

Pretty self-explanatory.

Currently you can only attach a single bug or thread, whereas there are often multiple attachments that could be made (particularly in the case of threads)
