GTK Frontend for Jack Audio Kit

Someone should program a GTK+ GUI for Jack. Currently there's a nifty little QT4 program called qjackctl that does this quite well, but it would be a breeze for an able programmer to whip up a GNOME program that has this kind of functionality.

Help to develop Gnome 3

Gnome needs a revoultion. Ubuntu uses Gnome.
Canonical could help the Gnome3-developers e.g. with money, tips, pc-resources or something else to speed up the development and to create a better Gnome3-release.
(KDE4 has much more features than Gnome, it is faster and looks better (my oppinion). Also it uses the powerful Qt4 as widgetset that is better than GTK+ at time. Gnome is going to leave behind KDE)
[edit] I dont't say that any DE is better, but Gnome needs help and Ubuntu primary uses Gnome. KDE4 is a great DE without help from the Ubuntu developers. [/edit]

Ability to view the size of a folder in Nautilus, in "list" view

I don´t think this is possible rigth now, would be great to display the size of the folders in the tab "size in Nautilus", currently it is just for files...
Maybe cache the results, and only compute the size of a folder if there are changes, so it won´t have to do it everytime ubuntu restarts...
I don´t say to make it default, no, that would probably slow things too much, just add that option, so we can turn it on...

So I right-clicked on a file and selected "Cut" in the context menu.
So that I later could "Paste" the file into another directory.
Make so that when you select "Cut" on a file, the icon becomes dimmed.
Because right now, there are no visual indication, so you don't know it worked.
In Windows there is a visual notification by the icon becoming dimmed.
In Ubuntu there is no visual notification, the icon does not become dimmed. This is confusing.

If the Ubuntu installer detects Windows, it should copy Arial, Verdana and other standard Windows fonts into Ubuntu, because the user has the license to use them.

Replace the awfull NWF by GTK. (like NeoOffice with Cocoa) NWF is often unstable and inconsitent. A clean GTK version will also run on multiple plattforms like OSX or Win32! In addition it might be more portable for mobile devices like OpenMoko based ones.

The only way to install Urban Terror on a Ubuntu machine is to manually install it. This is a very good game that supports Linux natively. I think Ubuntu should add it to the repository.

Quite often you want to find some files where you don't know the whole name, but several parts of it... with support of regular expressions within nautilus it would be a lot easier to handle that situations!

Make shared folder icon change automatic

When a folder is shared, the icon stays the same in nautilus. There is an icon that can be added to the folder to show that it is shared, but this icon should be automatically added so users know what folders are shared.
It would also be nice to have an option in the rightclick menu to "unshare"

Improving File Roller

(a)
When the user right clicks on an archive file like zip,rar,7z,etc, the options provided are :
1) Open with archive manager
2) Extract here
It would be nice to have the following menu option:
extract to
(b)
When opening an archive, file roller seems to read the entire archive in one go(or file roller is very slow in reading list of files in an archive). So, if the archive is really big, the user doesn't get to see the list of files & dir in it unless the entire archive hierarchy is fetched. I think WinRAR shows the list of stuff at the top level in the archive & reads the remaining archive hierarchy in background & the list shown in the UI is updated incrementally .
(c)
The File roller UI for creating archives by right clicking on folders is too simple and needs some more options like:
1) Delete files after archiving
2) options for selecting compression level
3) options for splitting archive across multiple files
4) password protection
Again Win RAR has a good UI for this
(d) There could be a context menu option for adding selected file(s)/folders(s) to an existing archive. Something like 'Add to archive'

1)small tree browser in the left pane( like the one in windows explorer, its convenient for quickly browsing the hierarchy'). The tree like structure in the "detailed" view on the right pane is very close to what i am talking abt. but, it needs to be on the left side with smaller icons so that it can fit into a smaller left pane.
2) Tabbed browsing instead of opening multiple windows
3) responsiveness, nautilus needs to render much faster that it currently does. Since the file explorer is one of the most frequently used app, ppl get easy frustrated when it doesn't work as expected.
4) There should be an option to apply a view setting (icons, details, etc) system wide( for all folders in the system) , that is, not remembering view setting for each folder and using a global view setting.
5) Dragging an entity should make it transparent. If not done, this tends to cover up the entity on which you are dropping it on. If transparency is not achievable due to some limitation in X server, show only the outline while dragging.
6) The shorcuts in the left pane, when right clicked should have context menu similar to that of a normal folder.

Enable Nautilus to use tabs.
Nautilus is Ubuntu's default file management software. There is no reason why you should need to open countless Nautilus windows to manage your files. It is time to bring tabs from your web browser to your file browser.

Speed Up Ubuntu-Gnome boot time

I guess everybody has experienced the rather long boot up times in Ubuntu (particularly with laptops). I know they are already working on it, but the change from feisty to gutsy was a pain in the ass in terms of boot up speed.
A default WinXP installation beats Ubuntu's boot up time by far!! That shouldn't be allowed fellas!!
I therefore propose to the development team (both Ubuntu and by extension Gnome)to work on the improvement of boot up times in Ubuntu systems.

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:
- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.
Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

LiveUSB

cdroms are slow, don't allow to modify their content easily, they are weak and not as easy to carry as USB keys.
It would be great to provide Ubuntu as a liveUSB just as Mandriva does. We should be able to carry our distribution on any computer, manage our preferred settings (do I want binary drivers enabled ? what is my preferred resolution ?), etc.
The thing is not to make something transportable, but really a nomad system that could be used just the best way as it could on any computer.
Developer comments
I've changed the title from "LiveUSB instead of LiveCD" to just "LiveUSB". Simplifying the creation of USB versions is a good idea, but it doesn't need to replace CDs just yet.
A tool to turn a USB disk into a bootable Ubuntu live image is planned for Ubuntu 8.10.

Kde 4 has its compositing window manager, instead gnome hasn't it. To have some bling a user should install compiz but it's not really reliable software, instead i see that you're working on clutter (for ubuntu mobile), it will be a great job to improve metacity using clutter as foundation library and move results upstream to the gnome community.

Easy way of backuping/moving your documents and settings

At the moment, if someone wants to backup his documents or prepare a migration from a computer to another there isn't much more than file-roller to create a backup.
Ideally, the user should be able to run a graphic software which would ask what the user wants to backup and where (tape/usb key/remote).
Then the same tool would be able to restore the backup.
It would be useful for both backups and migration from a computer to another.
Update : See duplicates ideas which contain even more great ideas about that idea.
