Mark Web-applications as "Essential" instead of "Low"

Written by nandersson the 20 Sep 08 at 13:12. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
As applications become more web centric it hurts to see the blueprint "Create a new framework for delivering web-based application" tagged with "Low" priority. That should be changed to "Essential" for Ubuntu 9.04.

TODO:
* Sort out how webapplications should be packaged, dependencies solved and how they should interact with RDBMS/LDAP etc.
* Updating mechanisms are critical as webapps are the weakest link in security. SQL-injections etc...
* Joomla has interesting features for version 1.6 with a "new plugins available" feature for webapps. Perhaps you could work out something standard together?

Options [Just Gnome's / Clear all] in Gnome's clear recent documents.
Written by r0g the 20 Sep 08 at 15:00. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
I don't know if the architecture would permit this but I find it kind of annoying that I can't JUST clear the list in Places/Recent Documents/Clear Recent Documents without clearing the recent documents lists from all my programs.

The workaround a lot of people use is to just disable this menu item by deleting it's config file and replacing it with a folder but this is a sloppy hack and sometimes this list may be useful.

There must be plenty of people who want to clear this list with out losing their recent documents in say, gedit, so I propose there should be two options on this menu:

1) Clear this list only

2) Clear in all programs

I'm sure it could be worded better but I'd really like to see this :-]

Written by stinger30au the 20 Sep 08 at 12:45. Category: Usability. Related to: Gnome. New
if you start up nautilus and look on lower left side you will see your current bookmarks you have to directory's on your pc

if you want to share one of these directory's on your lan, it ain't going to happen

if you right click on one of the directory's you get presented with

open
remove
rename

it would be so nice if i could share any of these directory's to my lan

A few multiplayer games installed by default
Written by carpii the 20 Sep 08 at 21:39. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
Unless Im mistaken, of the few games that get installed by default, none of them are internet multiplayer ones.
This isnt really in the spirit of 'community' and the vast majority of machines ubuntu is being installed onto, have access to the internet

Id like to see a few simple games which have multiplayer mode (ones where you can search for opponents, rather than just type an IP in).

Even windows XP has these by default, such as backgammon, and a few card games.

Show a list of donators
Written by pepperpupper the 20 Sep 08 at 13:29. Category: Marketing. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
Display a list of people donating money somewhere along the donations page. Maybe this could also attract companies to donate money, as it will be a way of advertising for them. Also, people donating a certain amount of money could get something (like an ubuntu-badge or so)

RIght click "Run in terminal"
Written by gszx1337 the 20 Sep 08 at 20:28. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Since the main way to troubleshoot applications in Linux is to run them in the terminal, the option of "Run in terminal" should be in the right click menu. It would make troubleshooting much easier for a newbie. Also, if someone was to post a problem with an application on the Ubuntu forums, when someone tells them to "run the application in a terminal" the poster user would not need to know what to type in the console.

Ubuntu promotion video
Written by Maike05 the 20 Sep 08 at 00:04. Category: Marketing. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
When searching on the web for ubuntu videos, you'll generally find youtube video's done by amateur, showing the outstanding and useless effects of compiz, but never the benefits of using Ubuntu.

What I'd like to see is some official video done by canonical, showing ubuntu is use. There should be different videos explaining how to install and use ubuntu, show the main features of the OS, and the new ones.

For example, Apple already do this for every new release of their OS.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/guidedtour/

I think it's a very good idea of them, and there should be something like that for Ubuntu.

Here I discovert an excellent script which make what I want :

"For now, it can:
Reduce images (in an intelligent way to the portrait)
To change the rate of JPEG compression
To send the pictures to Thunderbird or Evolution attachment
To copy images to a directory of your choice
To create a ZIP archive containing photos
To keep the configuration settings"

http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=137609

On ubuntu this is not user friendly...
=> Linux for humain beings without this ??

Right click on pictures, script , send by email and make much more than Nautilus send to ...

Tool to show which of my 32bit apps are(not) available in 64bit Ubuntu
Written by r0g the 20 Sep 08 at 14:45. Category: Others. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
Someday soon I'm going to want to move to 64 bit but part of my inertia in doing so is the leviathan task of figuring out if all the software I have installed is also available on the 64bit distro. I really don't want to move and then find out one of my key apps isn't available and then, as a newbie, have to schlepp around trying to recompile it.

It would be nice if there was an app that could generate a report checking the software I have against the 64 bit repos an letting me know what there is/isn't 64bit builds of.

Obviously it would be hard, if not impossible, to check things I have installed or compiled manually but this would be a start, and maybe there could be a web page somewhere listing the 64 bit avalability of popular manually installed software like flash and eclipse.

Now that Dropbox is available - http://www.getdropbox.com/ - and their Linux client is out and works great on Ubuntu ( http://www.getdropbox.com/install?os=linux ) - how about adding them to the Partner Repository?

In case you're not aware, Dropbox in an online backup/synch thing, with a free 2Gb of storage and cross platform desktop integration, inluding several Linux flavours. More info here: http://www.getdropbox.com/tour#1

I don't work for Drop box and this isn't an ad, it's just a cool service with good linux support - and I'd like to see them in the Add/Remove list more easily.

What do you think?

Integrate bzr-builddeb in Eclipse
Written by nandersson the 15 Sep 08 at 17:37. Category: Programming. Related to: launchpad.net. New
Thanks to Guillermo Gonzalez and his BzrEclipse we can now branch directly from Launchpad within Eclipse.

Next step would be to be able to run bzr-builddeb from within the same environment (Eclipse) - just like we can export to a .jar-file we could export to a .deb.

File -> Export -> General -> Deb File

And perhaps we could even export the package to our Personal Package Archive (PPA) in Launchpad - then it would just be a matter of doing an "sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install [my-package]" in order to try out the code on other machines.

I think the hardest issue to solve would be the GPG-signing part as it requires the users attention, cleanest solution would be to make use of Eclipse keystore. See http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/Security:_KeyStore_support_for_Eclipse

Then we could kiss the command line goodbye

Ubuntu Performance Benchmarking
Written by massond the 15 Sep 08 at 10:47. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Windows Vista has a built in benchmarking system, which helps in showing what your computer is built to run. It would be nice to have a feature like this in Ubuntu. This would help people know what their computer is capable of running, and for users of older computers, help find lighter applications based on their performance ratings.

Mark original installation
Written by millybreak the 15 Sep 08 at 10:48. Category: Usability. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
Supported applications/packages are indicated by an Ubuntu-icon, to make it easier to find "safe" installations. There is, however, nothing to indicate what belongs to the original installation.
Marking such items with, f.i, an asterix, will provide an easy way for less experienced users to avoid uninstallation of packages that belong to the original Ubuntu installation, thus keeping their system safe and stable.

This idea came up after reading Pjotrs' "Do this first" tips, where it is suggested to NOT remove originally installed pacakages, and then finding out there's no way to see which those are.

Make it easier to fully enable smooth fonts.
Written by enbuyukfener the 15 Sep 08 at 06:53. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
After a year on Linux, I was kinda pissed today when I made my fonts look twice as nice despite having already enabled hinting and smoothing from Gnome's Appearance > Fonts GUI.

It turns out you need to copy or symlink files from /etc/fonts/conf.avail/ to /etc/fonts/conf.d/
(EDIT: This is done for you on *fresh* installs of Ubuntu Hardy or above)

The changes I needed to apply are in the script I just made:

cd /etc/fonts/conf.d/
sudo rm 10-antialias.conf 10-hinting-medium.conf 10-no-sub-pixel.conf 70-no-bitmaps.conf

sudo ln -sf ../conf.avail/10-autohint.conf .
sudo ln -sf ../conf.avail/10-hinting-medium.conf .
sudo ln -sf ../conf.avail/10-no-sub-pixel.conf .
sudo ln -sf ../conf.avail/70-no-bitmaps.conf .

(followed by restarting X)

I believe this should be at least checked if not done for you. At very least, you should be warned in some way that the full effects of hinting and smoothing are not being applied.

Possibility to choose the grub line when rebooting
Written by jeffjoker the 29 Feb 08 at 09:23. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Often I only reboot to change the OS or kernel and I don't like to wait for shutdown and bios load to finally choose the OS and wait again for OS launch.
I use those unload et and load time to do other things.

I would be great when you choose reboot to have a pop up of the grub menu and choose the next boot selection.

Thanks in advance.

Integrate Update Manager, Synaptic, and Gdebi into one interface
Written by tebibyte the 13 Jul 08 at 23:36. Category: Installation. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
Ubuntu has 4 different GUI applications that manage packages. Each provides similar but different functionality. These utilities should be combined in a unified interface to eliminate the appearance of bloat, while providing an all in one center for all your package managing needs.

If you want to update the system while installing new software, you can do them together. Gdebi packages can be easily installed with other software from the repositories. Users won't have to open multiple interfaces for similar tasks, streamlining operation in Ubuntu.

kde and gnome should join forces
Written by davim the 13 May 08 at 23:44. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'm an happy gnome user but I think that the linux community would benefit with the merging of kde and gnome....

I know that the competition is good (survival of the fittest) but having the best of gnome and KDE would be so nice...

It could start with the merging of QT and GTK!

Do filesystem check less often
Written by zooounds the 13 Apr 08 at 18:20. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I know that you can skip this test in hardy but I still think the test is done way to often.

EXT3 is a good file system so I see no need to check the file system so often.

Users (for example Windows users) may think that Ubuntu has a bad file system you can't trust.

An option would be that the first time the file systems need checking tell the user WHY the system is checed and ask how important she think it is (like Never, Seldom, Often)
