Webcam with Pidgin!

Pidgin is a good program to chat on all protocols, but a webcam plugin is still missing.
The developers aren't decided to code webcam support, but having this in Pidgin is very needed.
Or why not code this plugin for emesene? But you can only use the MSN protocol at the moment!

In many cases, I can't configure my webcam or I have problems with the microphone. Now I can use my webcam but only with V4L2 and only 3 programas detect my webcam. It's a good idea can use my webcam in all programs as camorama.
Developer comments
That's pure driver issue in the first place. A big plus is to recommend UVC-based webcams to users, since it takes a lot of work off the shoulders of driver-developers. On the
integration-side proper support for v4l/v4l2 in webcam-related applications needs to be solidified. The ideal application to polish up is cheese of course.

Can the default desktop PLEASE get a facelift? Fresher, happier colors would make my day. (Sure you can customize, but I convert a lot of people to using Ubuntu, and they all say the same thing when they first see it start up: "Its...brown? :("

There are two pieces of hardware that many many ubuntu users use: the external harddrive an the iPod.
If ubuntu had an easy to use GUI for updating an ipod - from music to video to artwork to whatever, it would make a lot of people happy.
This functionality is all available for the most part, someone just needs to make a clean and reliable GUI for it. In my experience gtkpod and rhythmbox just doesn't cut it. I have had permissions issues, and all sorts of other issues.
Ubuntu having great iPod support would be one more step to show the masses that windows is unnecessary to utilize peripherals.

I'd like an easy way to set environment variables (both globally and for the current user only) and have them take effect without having to log out and back in.

xobni for outlook is probably the best thing that has happened to email since... greylisting and... Thunderbird!
xobni is a plugin that helps you keep track of your mail-history with contacts.

Making Thunderbird the default mail client should also be done already. I'm sure there are more people than me that install it first thing after setting up a fresh Ubuntu dist.

Mac has a very useful feature I wish would be adopted into Windows and Linux: when you tell it to shut down and it asks the standard "Are you sure?" type message, Macs will shut down if it doesn't receive an answer within two minutes. I know to many people that hit shutdown but leave without confirming the command, so the system sits there sucking power waiting.

I hope my phone can remote control my TV,net media, air condition, lampe of my house, Phone can be a general remote control, I think it is very interesting, very practicality, and it's not difficult to become truth by now technology. furthermore, we can integrate the function of TV card to a net card, so the computer will have all function of TV, and can be remote controled by the same control module.

Brainstorm: Avatars and "mod points"

On most forums, people don't read every username. They just glance at an avatar to see who's post it is. I think something like that would be good for the Brainstorm site too, so we can quickly identify commenters. Another, secondary, idea I thought would be good, is something like Red vs Blue's mod points. Essentially, along with voting an idea up or down, you could also do that to comments. Then people reading the comment threads would get a feel for the overall reputation of the people posting ideas and commenting, and an idea for how much support an individual comment has received.

Brainstorm: Don't start with most popular, and hide grades until requested

Implemented

Change start page of Brainstorm to show latest ideas or something, else people will probably push for the already high-graded ideas and won't care of other newer ideas.
Maybe a page with random ideas?
And remove the grades if not specifically requested, since it will affect peoples voting.
Developer comments
New front page, with a descending (nb of votes)/(time since creation) sorting.
This way, the newest ideas have their chance to stand up!

Ubuntu's bootloader is a stark black and white screen, filled with confusing options. It gives newbies a moment of indecision, as they try to figure out if they are supposed to choose something, and wonder why there are three or four Ubuntus listed. Then the timer finishes counting down (starting from 10), and the newb begins to feel like he's getting in over his head as his PC boots into Ubuntu.
Too much information up front, stark text-only display, painfully long countdown timer. What would be the alternative? Well, when a Fedora PC is booted up, the first thing the user sees is a graphical splash screen, and "Booting into Fedora (kernel version) in 4 seconds ... " The user can press a key to interrupt and select from kernel versions or alternative operating systems, or just let it boot into Fedora.
Can't we create our own attractive bootloader? Or, failing that, copy-and-paste Fedora's?

Speed Up Ubuntu-Gnome boot time

I guess everybody has experienced the rather long boot up times in Ubuntu (particularly with laptops). I know they are already working on it, but the change from feisty to gutsy was a pain in the ass in terms of boot up speed.
A default WinXP installation beats Ubuntu's boot up time by far!! That shouldn't be allowed fellas!!
I therefore propose to the development team (both Ubuntu and by extension Gnome)to work on the improvement of boot up times in Ubuntu systems.
