lowercase folder names
Written by Roanoke the 1 Mar 08 at 19:31. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When you get a home directory, all the folders are capitalized. This really hurts when using the commandline. If they can't all be converted to lowercase by default, at least have an option do do so.

Seach within nautilus is inefficient
Written by wile_e_wonka the 20 Mar 08 at 13:24. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Nautilus has a massive search problem:

1) Nautilus should save search results while the same window remains open.

2) It should not have to run the search again when I change the display from "icon view" to "list view."

3) And it should not have to run the search again when I navigate away from the search and back again.

4) A search should also show the path to the result.

5) Tracker should not be a separate program, but instead integrated within Nautilus. So the search feature in Nautilus would be fast. But be sure to allow restriction of a search to a sub-directory, if needed. Also, this would require an option to do a slower, more thorough search for items not yet indexed, if needed.

I'll explain...

Last night I wanted to find every reference to the word "opera" in my file system. It's hard to explain why. Anyway, I tried tracker, but it wasn't working for my purposes; I don't remember why exactly. So I did a search at the top level for "opera". After about five minutes the results finally appeared. There were several folders in the result titled "opera," but I couldn't see the path, so I navigated into the top search result. Then I pressed the "back" button to return to my search results. Nautilus had to perform the entire search over again! So, for 5 minutes again, nautilus searched. Just after it finished I realized the results would be easier to view in list form rather than as icons. So I hit the button to change this--it ran the entire search again! 5 minutes just to rearrange the results it had already found! Crazy!

Able to drag files from filesystem into upload box of firefox
Written by THAiSi the 4 Mar 08 at 09:37. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Instead of using the 'browse' button of the uploadbox to select the file to upload, make is possible to drag a file from the file system into the upload box. Somehow it already shows the cursor while dragging, but on release of the mousebutton the filename in the upload box stays empty

Volume control per application
Written by andrewfenn the 29 Feb 08 at 02:47. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Some programs have audio but rely on the master volume control to limit that programs audio level. This can be limiting as a user might be playing a video that is silent but have a voice communication which is too loud.

I want the ability to control volume at the application level. This will give me more control over the audio output of programs.

Volume control (for muting sounds) in GDM
Written by mateusza the 1 Mar 08 at 12:36. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Having login sound is nice, but sometimes we boot our laptop during the lecture or a meeting and we want it to be absolutely quiet.

There should be a volume control or just a "mute" button in GDM Login window.

Pick volumes to be visible on desktop
Written by tomaq the 17 Mar 08 at 20:49. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Now there is only option to make all volumes visible on your desktop. How about letting each user choose witch volumes should be visible on the desktop. For example only removable drives.

Drag-and-drop Main Menu
Written by bbt the 16 Mar 08 at 16:37. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
When I currently want to add an application to the main menu (applications/places/system), I need to open System>Preferences>Main Menu and edit the list there ...

I would like to drag-and-drop whatever to and from the Menu.

When dropping launchers, create or copy the launcher in the Menu. When dropping files or folders, auto-create a launcher to it in the Menu ...

Speed Up Ubuntu-Gnome boot time   forum
Written by Arioch the 28 Feb 08 at 15:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I guess everybody has experienced the rather long boot up times in Ubuntu (particularly with laptops). I know they are already working on it, but the change from feisty to gutsy was a pain in the ass in terms of boot up speed.
A default WinXP installation beats Ubuntu's boot up time by far!! That shouldn't be allowed fellas!!

I therefore propose to the development team (both Ubuntu and by extension Gnome)to work on the improvement of boot up times in Ubuntu systems.

Fork Gnome
Written by spyyder the 14 Mar 08 at 16:26. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Gnome team is not in touch with the average user. They take the "tried and true" route on the development patch. KDE is far too bloated and unstable. Usability had not improved and easy of use remains stagnant on both end. Ubuntu seeks to make linux for human beings, but constantly relies on outside projects to provide that functionality. We need a middle ground interface that is powerful, element, and useful. I want to see new ideas and interfaces, not recycled ones. Gnome is Desktop 1.0 and its time to move the interface forward.

Add "Delete" to context menu
Written by taron the 14 Mar 08 at 16:25. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In the context menu of Nautilus (and the Desktop which is imo a part of Nautilus) is only the option "Remove to Trash". But like many other distributions I'd like to have a "Delete" option, that will delete files without moving to the trash. This should be done of course with a "Do you really want to do this?"-question.

And also - like it was said already - it would be nice to have a Secure Delete that overwrites the erased file (Gutmann e.g.), like shredder.

Static Icons: Ability to pin some icons in place on the Desktop
Written by Cybercod the 13 Mar 08 at 17:36. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would like the ability to lock some icons into a location that does not get affected when I use the "Clean up by name" feature.

That way I could put my static icons (such as drives or special folders) on the right hand side and everything else would gravitate to the left.

I would also like to be able to choose which way the icons orient. It would be cool to have the option of making them group to the right, or the bottom if I so chose when "Cleaning up" instead of the upper left

It is very frustrating when you get caught out after 30 boots and the system does a full check. Especially if you are about to give a presentation or you just need to read one bit of information. The Ubuntu team have done a great job of speeding up the boot time but this irritation undoes all the good work.

Possible solutions and further explanation:

This is implemented in Hardy Heron.
You can press the escape key to cancel the disk check.

Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.

Open a terminal window through Nautilus
Written by Virus the 3 Mar 08 at 16:47. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
Sometimes it's unconfortable when you're searching some files (for example when compiling and installing a program) and when you are "inside" the folder in the file manager, you want to compile. You need the terminal.

So, you need to reach the folder and reach that folder typing all the way to do it, and it's very tedious when the program name is too long.

I suggest that in the menu (File menu) it would appear an item called "Open Terminal in this folder" or simply "Open terminal".

Developer comments
This used to be available by default in GNOME but it was a conscious design decision to remove it by default. There are no plans to implement this by default in Ubuntu.

Check forced at shutdown, not startup
Written by Matt Arnold the 29 Feb 08 at 00:39. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
On startup Ubuntu will sometimes say the disk "has been mounted x times without being checked, check forced". Then it will make me wait to use the computer. Why not do this at shutdown instead of startup? When the user starts up the computer, they're sending a message to Ubuntu saying "I want to use my computer now." Not later. When they shut down, they're telling Ubuntu "I don't want to use my computer now." Do it then.
