Remove built-in upgrade options
Written by Lee the 1 Mar 08 at 10:31. Global category: System. Implemented
Applications like firefox have built-in upgrade notifications, and sometimes the ability to download/install upgrades. This is dangerous, on a system like Ubuntu that has a better way of doing it.

This is not only a problem for people providing free tech support for ubuntu, it's a security risk in organisations using free desktops.

I'd like to see these things patched out.

If the rating for an idea falls below -100, it should automatically be deleted, and its author informed.

Copying by rightclick-and-drag
Written by Priceguy the 29 Feb 08 at 20:06. Global category: System. New
The one thing I miss since I left Windows for Ubuntu about 13 months ago is the ability to copy files by rightclick-and-dragging. Now, I don't know of a simpler way to copy files in the graphical interface than copy/paste.

Make "Digg This" like buttons, firefox plugins and widgets
Written by cybermonk the 29 Feb 08 at 18:31. Global category: Others. New
Make it super easy for people to vote. Minimize already voted ideas using some Javascript trick. So that there is better accessibility to ideas to be voted for.

Make Brainstorm link available from the default desktop/start-up menu of Ubuntu

Written by fcsonline the 29 Feb 08 at 17:08. Global category: Installation. New

Improve the installer to install other things that not only are applications.

Could be classified as:

- Applications
- Codecs
- Fonts
- Themes
- Widgets
...

Similar to as does firefox and additions. (Extensions, Themes, Languages)

Install / Uninstall programs as in windows
Written by ibairg the 29 Feb 08 at 09:26. Global category: Installation. Already implemented
The Synaptic package manager is fine, but if I give a programme of ubuntu in a CD, and has units etc., there is always a problem, it would have to be double click and you are, and to remove the same, as in Windows.

brainstorm: Hating other users
Written by yman the 29 Feb 08 at 07:57. Global category: Others. Won't implement
Give users the ability "hate" other users. When you "hate" another user, you automatically vote against anything posted by that user.

I think that allowing users to "love" other users would mean encouraging the creation of fictitious accounts that automatically support each other, so I am not suggesting it.

Developer comments
Let's not do this. Instead we'll add a 'report spam' button and repeat offenders posting spam or abuse will be visible there and can be banned by admins.

Transparency
Written by jayde_drag0n the 29 Feb 08 at 03:51. Global category: Look and Feel. New
specifically.. in the panels.. you have the ability to just right click.. and change the transparency.. what i would like to see added .. is the ability to do this to the menu bars (applications, places, system).. and add a "font color" slider.. so that if we want everything clear.. there is an easy to find and understand way of changinng the font to white or whatever color becomes visible for the user.. and doesn't change system-wide... only with the panel and menu

Solution #2: Ubuntu email / Ubuntu webmail
Written by mydoghasworms the 8 May 09 at 13:09.
Allow users to register an Ubuntu email account, so they can have an address like john.doe@ubuntu.com or john.doe@ubuntu.net.

Also offer a webmail service to complement this. The webmail site would of course include marketing, and something like "Invite a friend to join".

The Ubuntu name will then be seen by many people who mail their friends or get mails from their friends.

Solution #3: Ubuntu virtual world
Written by mydoghasworms the 8 May 09 at 13:11.
Using one of the available open source MMORPG engines like Planeshift, WorldForge, Sauerbraten etc., create a virtual world that users can build together and where they can collaborate, meet, etc. (I guess like Second Life, but with strong Ubuntu branding everywhere).

Solution #4: Ubuntu Portal (with integrated account!)
Written by mydoghasworms the 8 May 09 at 14:48.
Turn the Ubuntu.com website into a portal (think Yahoo! or something similar here) that offers users not just information about the product, but a place to read news, check the wheather, play games, chat, get email, (and search the Internet), all with an integrated account that would also be valid for Ubuntu webmail and other value-add services, including e.g. Ubuntu Virtual World as described above.
This would offer countless opportunities to present and promote the Ubuntu brand.
Perhaps on first boot, offer user to "Register for an Ubuntu Portal account".
