Tell Mozilla to count all the Firefox 3 downloads from repository
Written by unimatrix the 30 May 08 at 13:00. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
When Firefox 3 is released, make sure it is available to Ubuntu on the same day, so the updates from the Ubuntu repository can be counted for the *Guinness world record* in most downloads in 24 hours.
And most importantly, talk to Mozilla about relaying your Firefox 3 repository download data to them.
More info here: http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord

Let's help open source achieve another great victory!

Developer comments
This wasn't doable, there's no real accurate way to count Ubuntu users.

"Users" Page during Installation
Written by JYC the 30 May 08 at 04:29. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I'm all for a brief installation, but it would be nice during installation, to follow a cue from Redmond, be able to add other users, or enable single user and select an autologin option. Like:

Users Step x of x

( ) Add these users:

[Insert List Here]

Username:
Password:

Have Update Manager warn you if an update requires a reboot, BEFORE you update.   forum
Written by Catsceo the 29 May 08 at 19:59. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I find it very annoying when I update my Ubuntu box, only to find that after the update I need to reboot. I suggest a solution similar to Apple's software update*, where the update has the reboot icon located next to it to signify that a reboot will be needed or a reboot icon on the panel, similar to the way the new red down arrow in hardy signifies an important update.

Start An Official Ubuntu Online Driver Resource
Written by auryn21 the 28 May 08 at 19:10. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Have an online resource such as 'drivers.ubuntu.com' where users can submit, vote or comment on drivers that they've used to make their hardware work properly. This would negate having to search through multiple forums to find help on getting a particular compenent to work. You can search for drivers by manufacturer, device type etc, then download and install by following install directions or tips from previous users.

Check http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/drivers/ or driverguide.com or windrivers.com for ideas or examples of how this would work.

Easy-to-use way to recover broken Ubuntu system

There needs to be an easy way to recover a Ubuntu installation that got screwed somehow. [Edit: In my case, I uninstalled GNOME and switched to KDE, but then was not able to use my network, so I couldn't reinstall GNOME.] My idea is an option on the Live CD (called "Recover my Ubuntu") that will re-install all the packages that came with Ubuntu, leaving all your files and preferences untouched. This option would also allow for a CD-assisted startup of Ubuntu.

UI font needs distinguishable I's and l's
Written by ethana2 the 25 May 08 at 02:46. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Did you know that Iagno starts with an I? I thought it was Lagno for the longest time. It would be nice to avoid confusion like that. I'm sure the usability folks can figure out the best way to do it.

Partner with Electronic Arts for native ports of their games.
Written by jmxz the 24 May 08 at 00:39. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The only thing most of my friends want Windows for anymore are a few games.

I think Canonical and the Ubuntu community should work closely with leading game publishers to get them to release native Ubuntu ports of their games.

Add a Wikipedia extension to Deskbar so that you can search Wikipedia from the Deskbar.

This would be useful for all, but especially Edubuntu.

Make so that you can perform simple math straight from Deskbar.

Such as 917-437, or 652+313 or 94/7, or 124*71.

The Weather Repot panel should provide a 5-day forecast
Written by wladston the 23 May 08 at 02:04. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently,. it only shows the actual weather status. It would be a great addition, I wouldn't have to go to a website to check the weather anymore.

This can be done like that - when the user clicks the panel icon, a list shows under it with the forecast for the next 5 days.

Firefox - offer to kill firefox instead of restart the system
Written by wladston the 22 May 08 at 17:26. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Sometimes, when I try to open firefox, I get this error

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.

I propose to change that, including a button - "Close firefox now" :

Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process. [Close firefox now]

Don't show the fast user swith applet if there is just one user
Written by wladston the 23 May 08 at 01:52. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
After all, it takes up a lot of space, creates clutter and it's absolutely of no use for people that got just one user on the computer.

man GUI
Written by Primož Papič the 19 May 08 at 22:00. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Although it's not very Ubuntu to tell anyone to RTFM, manuals should be read. But for now manuals are accessible only through terminal, which is not really new-user friendly.
Also there is no way of knowing what to write to get certain manual. I know for only two manuals: form rm and Lynx.
=========
Manuals could be added to Help which should be included in every app package. I know that some of my apps that I installed through apt-get don't have Help.

Update Firefox 3 beta 5 to RC1   forum
Written by MarcoSilva the 19 May 08 at 10:38. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. Implemented
There is a logic for this in my opinion:

1 - Improve usability, stability and speed for Firefox users in Ubuntu. Beta 5 has some big issues.

2 - This also would help the Mozilla dev team because there would be thousand of users using RC1 instead of Beta5.

3 - The "Beta" can confuse some users.

So, what do you think?

Developer comments
FF3 final can now be downloaded via the update manager.
