ADD BITTORRENT OPTION ON THE MAIN DOWNLOAD PAGE!

The Novell guys took the lead already: http://software.opensuse.org/

When Hardy Heron was released, the Ubuntu servers became overloaded with thousands of people trying to download it. Downloading rates of repositories and updates were so slow that some people had to leave the computer on at night only to find connection errors the next morning.

However, if Canonical had promoted the BitTorrent downloads, this wouldn't have happened. Everyone would have got a copy of Ubuntu without slowing the repository servers and producing a Denial-of-Service effect.

Moreover, BitTorrent has many advantages over direct downloads. For instance, the more people downloading at the same time, the more sources and lesser the wait. In addition, it ensures file integrity because it uses hash functions, that is, files cannot be corrupted (modified). Not to mention that transfers can be resumed if the connection is broken.

Therefore, BitTorrent downloading should be included in the Get Ubuntu page ( http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download ) with a succinct but clear explanation on how to use them.

The fact that this idea hasn't been implemented --despite all the votes in favour-- clearly shows a neglect and reluctance from Canonical decision-makers to do what is best for the community. The worst thing is that they aren't giving an explanation. I hope good ideas in this site don't come to die here in a puzzle of bureaucracy :(

The reason Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution is because developers listen to people. Let's keep that "humanity towards others" alive.

Developer comments
We do actually have a BitTorrent tracker and support BitTorrent downloads; you can see the .torrent files on releases.ubuntu.com, and every release features people eager to provide seeding.

I think the reason the torrents aren't prominent on getubuntu/download is that there are a lot of problems with the server-side tracker software; particularly around release time, it has to be restarted manually rather a lot as new files are made available, taking ages to reinitialise each time, and this makes our sysadmins unhappy. Our webmaster also wants the download page to be as simple as possible, and each option does add a level of complexity to the process.

That said, BitTorrent certainly can help to scale back server load (although so can using mirrors other than Canonical's - there's a reason there's a period before release when the images are available on our servers but we ask people to restrain themselves from posting links to them, and that's to give mirrors a chance to fetch the images first).

On 3 June, our webmaster added a note to the bottom of http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download on how to retrieve images by BitTorrent, which I believe was in response to this item. This ultimately takes you through to the releases.ubuntu.com page from which you can get the .torrent files.

Bearing in mind some of the constraints involved that lead to something of a compromise, I'm interested in whether that resolves this item.

Hi guys!
packagekit gets more and more attraction, i don't think that i have to explain it here, someone who knows this page knows also packagekit and its possibilities i.e. share package discribtions & news, openoffice.org can use it for the installation from additional packages/art; automatic printer driver download from lsb-site and so on...

more here:

and a really hot presentation from fosdem08:

Unfortunately the needed pieces didn't come together for PackageKit in Intrepid. Hopefully they may be ready for Jaunty.

Allow Wubi installs to Remove Windows via Add/Remove
Ubuntu has no way of easily uninstalling Windows

Right now, Wubi allows Windows users to install Ubuntu and, if they no longer need it, uninstall it. However, there is no way to easily uninstall Windows if it is no longer needed any more.

I propose that an item be created in Add/Remove that allows all Windows components to be removed, including having the Windows boot loader replaced entirely by GRUB, leaving the fully functioning Ubuntu installed on an NTFS partition.

Make gnome support transparency (rgba)
Written by gmeier the 3 Jun 08 at 07:12. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be very nice to see all gnome core apps support transparency.
I am of course not talking about completely transparent windows, that can be done with compiz already, but something like this:
http://cimi.netsons.org/blog/index.php?s=aiming
At least the existing patches should be included in ubuntu by default: http://www.cimitan.com/murrine/rgba-support/list
This would be very easy, but offer a lot of new theming options.

GCALDaemon offers two-way synchronization between Google Calendar and various iCalendar compatible calendar applications. GCALDaemon is primarily designed as a calendar synchronizer but it can also be used as a Gmail notifier, Address Book importer, Gmail terminal and RSS feed converter.

It's an excellent tool and voting against this is simply moronic.

Although not officially a standard, it has been common practice by most distributions that the /bin/sh link points to /bin/bash.

Ubuntu broke this common practice and links /bin/sh to dash.

This breaks A LOT of 3rd party apps, and causes A LOT of unneccessary trouble and support incidents.

If Ubuntu wants to promote dash, it should change all shell scripts to include a dash shebang. But it should NOT mess with the default /bin/sh link.

DON'T say "it's the script writer's fault when he uses /bin/sh and requires bash". We all know that. Nevertheless, a serious distro should not mess around with things that have become common practice even if wrongly so.

The end result of the current situation is that many things mysteriously work "everywhere but on Ubuntu".

Change the Gnome Weather/Calendar Icon for Fog/Mist

I know this is a very small thing to suggest, but the fog/mist icon used by the built in Ubuntu weather applet is VERY ugly.
The square icon looks out of place, and whenever I see it my first though isn't "oh look, fog" but rather "great!, why isn't my weather applet working" -- It looks more like an image isn't loading then a representation of the current weather.

Again, I understand that this is a very minor issue, but it should also be very minor to implement (provided others agree about the icon).

Add a GUI to PulseAudio
Written by sf_007 the 19 Mar 08 at 19:38. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A default GUI for PulseAudio would be great, the ability to control the volume for each program is a very useful thing...

[edit] For those who want it, just install padevchooser (PulseAudio Device Chooser) through synaptic, it also install all the other packages needed...

Closing programs via Window List before they've started
Written by unimatrix the 9 Nov 08 at 11:43. Category: Usability. Related to: Gnome. New
The idea is to be able to close a program, WHILE it is still loading, by right clicking on it in Gnome toolbar (Window List applet) and selecting "Close".

This is useful when you accidentally run a program that takes a lot of time and CPU to load. In MacOSX you are able to close it before it is loaded. This should be possible in Linux too.

Suggested solution: Right clicking on the loading program and selecting "Close" should get the PID of that program and kill it.

Totem Movie and Music Player: Skip files in playlists on error, instead of dying
Written by tchalvakspam the 4 Nov 08 at 20:17. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Totem Movie Player. New
When Totem comes across a file that breaks, instead of failing on that file, it should skip to the next one, when a playlist is involved. The message should still be displayed to notify the user, but it shouldn't interrupt playback unless some kind of looping failure is occurring.

Adept (KDE 4) still needs usability improvements!
Written by 1cewolf the 27 Sep 08 at 02:05. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Kubuntu. New
You know, there's a lot I've always liked about Kubuntu. I'm running Intrepid and I like what I see. Its default settings conform more to my preferences than OpenSUSE, I don't usually have to deal with dependency hell, and I think it's easier overall to use. My hat is off to the Kubuntu devs in that respect...

...but Adept is STILL a stinker.

Sorry, guys, but it's true. I've tried to get used to using Adept for quite a while now but it's simply nowhere near as intuitive as Synaptic.

I'll give you a simple example. When I hover my mouse over the green box which represents installed packages in the State family of tags, the tooltip says "Show installed packages". Huh? Does that mean that it's showing installed packages or does it mean that it will show installed packages if I click on it? It happens to be the former, but you wouldn't be able to tell easily because it's ambiguous. Why not have the tooltip say something like "Showing installed packages" or "Showing installed packages, click to hide installed packages" to make it clearer.

If I click on the green box to de-select installed packages and hover my mouse over the now-gray box, the tooltip still says..."Show installed packages". Again, the tooltip ought to be clarified here.

I know that the icons are colored when they're selected and grayed out when they're not, but this distinction can sometimes be difficult to make. The box for "not installed", for example, doesn't look all that much different whether it's selected or de-selected.

Here are a few more issues I've got with Adept:
*Why not save package descriptions for the "details" tab? I'd like it better if you'd click on a package in the "search" tab, you'd see just the version installed (if it IS installed), version available and the option to install/remove/upgrade it.
*Why isn't there an option to re-install packages like there is in Synaptic?
*In the "changes" tab, why not rename the "Upgrade" button to something a little more informative, like "Mark Available Upgrades"?

(Sorry for my poor level in English)

Hi!

Today, a phoronix article is released, "Ubuntu 7.04 to 8.10 Benchmarks: Is Ubuntu Getting Slower?" (Website: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_bench_2008&num=1

In many tests, Ubuntu 7.04 is the faster version of Ubuntu.

I think and hope 9.04 will have to get faster than the previous versions.

Mockup of Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex
Written by nq6 the 8 Jun 08 at 13:00. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I created the mockup of Ubuntu using some elements of other mockups. I think the change of Ubuntu may not be radical. Because it draws its visual identity.

He is easily identified, and its windows are differentiated from all distributions in the first look, as we see in the TV series, Criminal Minds

People who use wubi install to try the system would benefit from a tool that would make it easy to migrate the install to a native (partition) install.

Developer comments
It is postoponed to 9.04, BUT we
might have something in the backports or PPA available in 8.10.
