Give the option to watch FLV (flash videos) in VLC
|
|
Written by komputes the 6 Jul 08 at 14:38. Category: Multimedia.
Related to: Flash plugin (macromedia).

Currently, Adobe has given us a bloated semi-working flash plugin without releasing the source code for it. The result is a slowdown in firefox and stutters in the video (for higher end computers, perhaps only on fullscreen).
My current setup: I currently have REMOVED the flashplugin-nonfree and I use Video DownloadHelper to download the flv file and then I open it in VLC. This works great for me.
The Benefits:
1)Full screen resolution (No big status bar)
2)No stutter
3)No slowdown in firefox.
So here is what I propose, there are two ways of implementing this idea:
1) Find a way to make VLC a flash player embedded into Firefox (mozilla-plugin-vlc)
2) Open Youtube website -> Automatically starts downloading to ~/Videos -> Opens in VLC.
User has a choice of how long the videos should be kept.
What does everyone think?

A developer flagged my idea as "won't implement", but from his comment its pretty obvious to me that he didn't really read it. The developer is anonymous, and there's no way to send them a message. I find this highly irritating!

Many dmesg and syslog errors should appear as notification balloons as well

For instance, if you plug in a USB device that is malfunctioning or not detected correctly, errors will be generated in the System Log, but nothing at all will happen in GNOME. Things like this should generate friendly graphical error balloons so that people at least recognize that something's gone wrong, instead of just thinking the device was not even recognized.
As braaivleis points out, it doesn't have to actually pop up the balloon; it can be like the updates icon that appears, but only shows a balloon when you click on it.

Update manager should always show last time it checked for updates

Right now Update manager only shows the last time it checked for updates when there are no new updates available, but IMO it should always show that because it is important information.
I don't want to download and install updates only to check for updates after that and find new updates for the same updated packages.
Since I can't see when was the last check I always click check before I install all the updates.
This idea is easy to implement and provides better usability.

There needs to be a button to report topics that turn into flamewars. For example http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/10368/ is turning into a flamewar about religion. There should be a button called "Report this Topic to Admins" like most message boards have.
The kind of discussion that is turning into destroys the Brainstorm community.

Ubunt.com RSS feed installed by default

Currently the only RSS feed is the BBC latest Headlines by default in firefox, it would be nice to have Ubuntu RSS feed (available from the ubuntu.com) install as well by default
Also Ubuntu RSS feed should include development release (Alphas and betas etc) so the the community can keep up-to-date with the last developments
The reason why we should have it installed
1 Informs about Ubuntu development
2 Informs about security treats
3 Informs about new products
4 Easy way to distribute information to Ubuntu users
5 Informs about beginning and end of unsupported / supported Ubuntu product

Always give reason for need to reboot

Often after doing an update the double arrow icon will appear indicating a need to reboot. But if you click it, no reason is given as to why reboot is needed.
My idea is that clicking on the icon (or a "Why?" link for more information) should indicate why the OS thinks a reboot is needed so I can make a decision about whether to do it now or later.

Integrate aircrack with network manager for auditing purposes

It would be great if network manager could do a security audit on your access point; that is, invoke the aircrack-ng tools (say) to try to recover the WEP key, wrapped in an easy-to-use interface.
People concerned about the possibility for misuse ought to note that ubuntu already packages several network auditing tools that lets you do nefarious stuff if you're so inclined (like, say, aircrack-ng).

Automatically re-encode or resize media files being copied to portable devices

When I plug in my old Motorola Razr phone, Ubuntu recognizes it as a music device and opens Rhythmbox. I'm able to drag and drop music onto the phone.
Unfortunately, my phone only has 256MB of storage, and I keep my music library in the FLAC format. Each song is about 30MB in size, and my phone doesn't understand FLAC.
Because of this, I have to re-encode my music into lower-bitrate MP3 files, then copy those files manually onto the phone - instead of using the convenient drag and drop interface.
Rhythmbox should know about 'supported' audio formats for devices it recognizes, and automatically re-encode music on the fly when copying to those devices. If device storage is limited, music should be re-encoded at a lower bitrate to save space.
This kind of thing should probably happen for video and pictures as well. Maybe adding this behaviour to Conduit is the answer.

App to change wallpapers with fade transition

I'd love to see a stylish wallpaper switcher, which fades wallpapers at predefined intervals a la OS X.
There are lots of lovely wallpapers on sites such as www.interfacelift.com, and having them switch automagically with a beautiful fade transition would really complement Ubuntu and the often gorgeous-looking themes that people customise their desktops with.

Add a repository for creative commons / public domain / "free" ebooks.
Could be used for:
Ubuntu documentation
Project Gutenberg
Wikibooks
...and many more
The ebooks would simply go to a folder called ebooks (and a categorized sub folder if specified). A simple launcher in "Places" would provide access via Nautilus for browsing capability (using thumbnail views of ebook file types)
This would provide great benefit to Edubuntu users in particular due to the availability of classic literature in Project Gutenberg and the textbooks from wikibooks.

Quick Terminal

Advanced users of Ubuntu like to use the terminal for many tasks. Often these users leave a terminal open on the desktop, and must switch to it when they want to move from a graphical program to run a command. It's sometimes a hassle to have to find, click, type, click back...
I propose that a "Quick Terminal" be created. When the user hits a certain keyboard shortcut, the desktop fades and a terminal comes up with immediate keyboard focus. The user can then enter a command (or many) and then quickly jump back to the regular desktop. When the user returns to the terminal that is in the background, it remembers everything that has been typed before.
This would create a seamless transition from the normal GUI desktop into the terminal world. Having both the GUI and terminal tightly woven will allow advanced users to very quickly accomplish their tasks in the most efficient way possible.
The quick terminal could be integrated with stuff like Compiz so that the animation of going from desktop to terminal could be changed.

add a "view in english" button to all error messages

Hello!
When you use Ubuntu in any other language than English, when an error message is shown, of course, it's shown in your own language.
...But, as the best way to solve the problem, is googling it, and as most of the documentation there is in english, it would be a good thing to have a button (or a right-click entry) on that kind of message to print (or copy to the clipboard) the exact syntax of the original message. When we try to translate it ourselves, we can't really now how it was written in the original message thought there are different translations for a single message that could be used.
This would also be great to help us submit bugs.
Thanks
Brice
