Gnome 2.24 has been released with some great new features, focusing on improving user experience through its GUI.
http://www.webmonkey.com/blog/Upgrade_Your_Linux_Desktop_Experience_With_GNOME_ 2DOT24
I imagine that it's too late to include them... BUT AT LEAST, include its new beautiful wallpapers, to TRY TO SAVE this release...
--------------------INCLUE THEM BY DEFAULT--------------------
Since, at least for what I've seen in Alpha 6, is almost Hardy with a different name.
EDIT: Is sad to realize Dev's still DON'T GET IT.

The GNOME wallpapers are available in the "gnome-backgrounds" package

Enhance Transmission

Transmission at the moment isn't advanced enough as the other BT clients.
First, it lacks the function of moving the torrent data after it's complete. What if I want to move the data I've downloaded and keep on seeding it?
Second, it doesn't manage queues properly. It doesn't work with multiple trackers either. If the tracker allows you to download only one torrent at a time, Transmission is likely to stay idle after you downloaded the first torrent in your queue instead of proceeding to the next one.

Volume control in top panel should always work

Sometimes I'm listening something with rhythmbox, and I want to lower the volume to answer the phone, however, the volume control in the gnome-panel does not do this, I must find my rhythmbox window and lower the volume from there. Same happens with flash plugin's audio (myspace, etc).
It would be nice for this control to work as a 'master volume control' which controls the volume of everything.

This is sixth alpha version of upcoming Ubuntu, and I noticed that there is no change in default theme while it is only 10 days left for first beta release.
Please launch Beta-1 with new default theme.
NB: I have given my vote for “WALL LIGHT THEME”.

A new, great version of VLC (0.9.2) has been released.
It would be really great to make an exception to the feature freeze rule and let this new version of VLC ship with Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex.
I'm sure most Ubuntu users will thank you for it!

If a dark theme: one that doesn't suck!

Originally, i was really against the idea of a dark theme, and maybe i'd still prefer it if Ubuntu would lighten up a little. I understand the organic theme completely, but please...this is an operating system. Anyways, all the dark themes i had seen really turned me off and even the best ones seemed to be loved by some and hated by others. If we're going to have a dark theme, lets have one that we can all agree on. When i saw the Intrepid alpha screenshot, like many others, i gagged a little.
How people interact with their computer is really essential to their satisfaction. This is why aside from features, the software's stability (minimizing annoying bugs), speed (clean code and making everything as efficient and responsive as possible), and interface (look and feel) are the three most important things that should be our focus and be kept at a high priority.
We should really work to increase usability: http://mpt.net.nz/archive/2008/08/01/free-software-usability
I have looked through all the artwork submissions for Intrepid, and of all of them, this is the one dark theme that i would actually like to use: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/Wall-light
I first saw it on this Digg submission: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Intrepid_Ibex_Mockup_Designs
Of course, i'm sure everyone will have input to make it even better. This isn't a final design, but vote for the concept so far!
P.S. Please Digg :) Thanks http://digg.com/linux_unix/Vote_for_a_beautiful_usable_Ubuntu

Online Ubuntu compatible - PC Hardware Store
|
|
Written by madjr the 6 Mar 08 at 17:49. Category: Hardware support.

An online Ubuntu PC hardware store is what people (aka "masses") need to fully make the jump to Ubuntu. Sell the hardware "known to work" (pre-installed Ubuntu computers and peripherals) and support those manufacturers who actually care about Linux compatibility.
when you purchase a Mac you know everything is compatible and everything you purchase at a APPLE STORE also is tested and works 100% with Mac OS.
but when you try Ubuntu on your own, there is always a risk that many of your hardware/peripherals may not work. The worst problem is YOU DON'T KNOW where to Purchase compatible hardware to FIX your problem.
If you can't fix your problem, then you are back once more in Windows... (be it a dialup modem, Usb modem, wireless card, bluetooth, printer, scanner, videocard, webcam, etc)
you always have the community to help + the guys at http://www.phoronix.com/ have always pitched in this area, but is not enough.
We need 100% Ubuntu compatible and tested hardware by canonical themselves to be sold online. Only sell what works (there is no need to test all the hardware in the world)
this would create a real market demand for "Linux compatible" hardware from manufacturers.
we can't support every piece of hardware like we have been doing, we need to support what WORKS NOW!
If this is implemented a few other good things will happen:
1- Less forums posts like these: "i can't get XXXX hardware to work, why doesn't it work! i got working hardware in windows or mac, ubuntu sucks blah blah"

Less screensavers

Actually, we have 5 wallpapers, 9 themes and 80+ SCREENSAVERS!!!
WHAT THE HELL!
Who need that amount of screensavers?
I think we should vote five to the default installation, and the other ones comes with a optional package?
Isn't gnome "keep it simple"?
For me just a "dim screen" is enough for default.

Make sure Dell provides unbiased information about linux.

With dell's new netbook due to come out soon, it is extremely important for the growth of linux that they provide honest information about it. They shouldn't say something like:
"The linux option is cheaper than the xp option. However, it can not run most commercial programs" After reading that, why would anybody choose it? It should say something along the lines of:
"Linux is an open source alternative to Windows. This means it is completely free for anybody to use it in any way. It can do almost anything that you can do with windows. It cannot run windows software, but there are many free alternatives that do the same thing included with it. It comes with a word processor (That can handle .doc), a web browser, an email application, and many other utilities. It is also very easy to install new software, without the risk of viruses. In fact, there are virtually no viruses that can harm linux..."
This explanation is fairly unbiased, and all true, and provides a much more pleasing alternative. However, dell will not do write such a description because of the pressure of microsoft. We need to push dell to write the truth if linux is ever going to be common among everyday users.

Create a website similar to the Mojave Experiment, except for Ubuntu. This is a great marketing idea. It would help show that Ubuntu is an easy to learn alternative to vista and xp.

Wireless network working before GDM loads

There is no point offering remote logins with GDM, if peoples wireless connections don't work yet. I propose we make it possible to configure the wireless connection from GDM, and at the very least attempt to connect to the wireless network earlier, so that people don't require a hardwired network to use the functionality.

merge our package managers

Right now we have three package managers: gnome-app-install, Synaptic, and the .deb installer.
Why can't these be one application?
give gnome-app-install a backend to handle .deb files, or give it an administrative mode where it has all the power tools that synaptic has. Start somewhere. But end with one spot to manage every application installed on my system, no matter how it got there.
As a side note, another idea was automated install of tarballs. I know this will never be a perfect system because not all tarballs use the generic install method. But maybe push for some way to seperate and deal with those who do use the generic method.
There should be absolutely no reason for anyone to say that its easier to install, manage, and update apps on any other platform than Linux!

Mirror (to see yourself) in Compiz

If people have webcams, I think its a nice idea to have a face of the cube that is actually a mirror, that is to see yourself in full screen. So let's say you want to have a quick check on yourself, you do "ctrl + alt + up" and it changes to the mirror. Im saying compiz because it can actually make the whole cube more useful, but it can be a separate piece of software, that can be nicely integrated with a good shortcut.

Dependencies is a very big problem for newbies, especially if you don't have a good Internet connection. PBI packages for PC-BSD is an excellent solution for this problem. I would like to see an utility for automatic download packages with all dependencies (even if these packages already installed) and repack they to all-in-one deb package which you can move to any system and simply install by doble click. Or maybe it is possible to add the option to Synaptic for generate download script for all packages even if they already installed in system.

I think the gnome-device-manager should be added by default as a substitute for lsusb and lspci, which greatly simplifies the assessment of hardware devices in a ubuntu system.
