translation filter in pidgin :D
Written by soyporti the 30 Sep 08 at 06:07. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Pidgin Internet Messenger. New
Maybe pidgin could translate the words we receive to our language, and maybe translate the words we send to another language, just by setting filters.
A plug in can do that i think (using on line services of course)
The filters should allow to be set for each contact on the list of contacts.
:D

Theme development plugin for Inkscape (for vector theming)
Written by Auzy the 27 Sep 08 at 11:46. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Inkscape Vector Graphics Editor. New
It would be good if there was an easy way to create vector/svg & raster themes for different programs/environments on Linux. I propose making an extendable plugin for inkscape, that will help streamline theme design for Gnome, amarok, QT, GTK, etc easy.

It should be capable of:
- Showing a preview window of the theme in real-time
- Allow users to click elements in the preview window to modify their appearance
- Temporarily preview it system wide
- Automatically submit it to a theming site.
- List the elements, allowing designers to click the element to edit it, and identify elements which are yet to be themed.
- Outputting the theme as a raster, or vector theme.

Because of of now, I don't believe there is a streamlined process of designing/change the theme, and previewing the changes in real-time. Such a plugin would encourage the development of new linux themes, make linux themes more internally consistant, ensure themes get made properly, and eliminate the need for designers to have to read any documentation to make them. Making themes with this plugin should make it easy enough for any user to make them (even me).

This is a modification of Theme development plugin for Gimp which would naturally only allow raster themes. However, as people point out, themes should can also be vector based. Vector based drawing programs often allow a combination of both.

true colaborative illustrations for wallpapers
Written by nitrofurano the 26 Sep 08 at 23:09. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Live CD. New
In an Orkut community, some colaborative experimentation were done there:
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/2415/curupirawallpck7.png
http://www.orkut.com/Main#Community.aspx?cmm=14942265

Since the whole illustration colaborative process is so unstressing, exciting, productive, and surprising, would be interesting if the Ubuntu illustrations could be done with this intense colaborative method.

"Not installed applications" filter for Add/Remove apps
Written by enbuyukfener the 26 Sep 08 at 05:12. Category: Usability. Related to: Gnome. New
I quite like gnome-app-install (Add/Remove Applications), especially its popularity counts. I've installed Ubuntu on several computers and use that tool almost every time to quickly find and install what I think the user needs.

What would be nice though is an extra filter for "not installed applications" (there is currently one for "installed applications").

Not only would it help with my needs, it also helps all users find useful software that they may not have come across without wading through hundreds of packages, over half of which may be installed on a fairly typical desktop system.

Ability to show only volumes mounted externaly on the desktop
Written by saquib the 21 Sep 08 at 16:06. Category: Usability. Related to: Gnome. New
It is only possible to show/hide all mounted volumes on the desktop. There should be a way to choose if I want only external mounted drives to appear on desktop.

For example, i have 2 Windows partitions mounted, and i dont want them on my desktop; however its' great to see a a mounted pendrive (flash disk) or any other drives mounted via USB/Firewire ports to be shown on the desktop.

Moon Phase in weather display
Written by nelson.blaha the 17 Sep 08 at 06:32. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Gnome. New
The panel weather icon for "clear night" always shows a full moon. On a clear night it would be cleverer to show what phase the moon is in, as long as we're showing a moon.

Allow Places AND Tree mode in Nautilus left panel
Written by carpii the 20 Sep 08 at 12:08. Category: Usability. Related to: Nautilus. New
For the side pane in Nautilus, you can choose between places (bookmarks) or Tree view (directory hierarchy).

Id like to be able to use Tree view, but also have some bookmarks shown.

Tree mode shows 'Home Folder', and then 'File System' as collapsible nodes. Perhaps a new 'Places' node could be added, which can then be expanded to show all the places youd normally see in Places mode.

Tool to show which of my 32bit apps are(not) available in 64bit Ubuntu
Written by r0g the 20 Sep 08 at 14:45. Category: Others. Related to: Synaptic package manager. New
Someday soon I'm going to want to move to 64 bit but part of my inertia in doing so is the leviathan task of figuring out if all the software I have installed is also available on the 64bit distro. I really don't want to move and then find out one of my key apps isn't available and then, as a newbie, have to schlepp around trying to recompile it.

It would be nice if there was an app that could generate a report checking the software I have against the 64 bit repos an letting me know what there is/isn't 64bit builds of.

Obviously it would be hard, if not impossible, to check things I have installed or compiled manually but this would be a start, and maybe there could be a web page somewhere listing the 64 bit avalability of popular manually installed software like flash and eclipse.

It should be possible to thank people on any thread   forum
Written by Endolith the 10 Sep 08 at 23:51. Category: Others. Related to: ubuntuforums.org. New
I often come across old Ubuntu Forums posts that answer a question I had, but the "Thanks" plugin does not allow me to thank them. The plugin should be updated to allow this for all posts in all threads.

Not only does this encourage people to post solutions to problems, it rewards friendly, helpful responses, and quickly shows readers of the thread which of the responses might contain the solution they are looking for.

See attached thread for description of why this is not currently possible.

make a plugin/extention to switch flash/gnash instantly
Written by Rioting_Pacifist the 26 Aug 08 at 12:15. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Flash plugin (macromedia). New
a plugin to allow a user to choose between flash players on the fly. this would
1) allow more widespread testing of gnash/gstreamer
2) allow gnash/gstreamer users to fall back on adobe flash if it fails

blurb:
while gnash is a good video player it fails with certain content. Most new user, and even existing users dont want to suffer a diminished web experienced by using gnash or gstreamer so stick to adobe, this will allow them to get the benefits of gnash/gstreamer without having to put up with the weaknesses of any one player.

valid flash players would include (others also avalible)
gstreamer - video only afaik
gnash - video and some games afaik
adobe flash 9 -buggy & high cpu usage
adobe flash 10-more temperamental w/ lower cpu usage

I think this is best implemented as something like mozpluger as that would make it avalible to all the webbrowsers i can think of. but i can also imagine it
being usable as a simple extension (like flashblock but with options for others) for firefox as firefox is the main ubuntu browser.

Mirror (to see yourself) in Compiz
Written by HermanChess the 27 Aug 08 at 07:52. Category: Others. Related to: Compiz. New
If people have webcams, I think its a nice idea to have a face of the cube that is actually a mirror, that is to see yourself in full screen. So let's say you want to have a quick check on yourself, you do "ctrl + alt + up" and it changes to the mirror. Im saying compiz because it can actually make the whole cube more useful, but it can be a separate piece of software, that can be nicely integrated with a good shortcut.

Work With ISPs To Provide Internet Connectivity For Linux Users.
Written by aikiwolfie the 18 Aug 08 at 10:03. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
Ubuntu Netbook Remix has been doing the rounds in the press for a while now. But the fact of the matter is a netbook is useless if you can't get on-line.

A common complaint of Linux users is they aren't supported by ISPs. Often getting things setup and working is a night mare process of manual configuration.

In the Windows world it's normally a simpler case of running a little install program and it sets everything up for you. We need ISPs to start doing this for Linux users.

Consumer Linux won't fly if you can't get on-line quickly and easily.

Add Emulators to the Repos.
Written by crhylove the 18 Aug 08 at 20:45. Category: Gaming. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
Console games are generally more fun, take less room, and work very well in Linux compared to commercial PC games. There are several EXCELLENT emulators that run well in Linux but do not have a package in the repos, despite their fully FOSS nature. I'd like to see updated builds of:

Zsnes
Mupen64plus
Dolphin
PCSX2

all in the repos. The all run well, and the games for Zsnes alone easily trump hundreds of Windows based games. It's frustrating to have to compile the source myself, or scrounge around for a .deb, particularly when all these emulators are fully open source.

Remove OpenOffice.org Splash Image
Written by Exsecrabilus the 14 Aug 08 at 13:25. Category: Graphics. Related to: OpenOffice.org Word Processor. New
Yes, I know OpenOffice.org takes forever to open so a giant block in the center of your screen with a tiny progress bar at the bottom is necessary.

If you actually think of it, you'll realize I am right. Why does OpenOffice.org have a splash screen, when no other application does? It would integrate into the mass of other applications well if a "Starting OpenOffice.org" panel item was created for a few seconds, just like all other applications.

Duplicate report contest
Written by Arnaudus the 11 Aug 08 at 18:39. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Brainstorm has a problem: good ideas are lost among a huge amount of messy noise, including thousands of duplicates. I have just proposed duplicates for 5 of the 10 first "Most popular today", and I am pretty sure I missed some of them. One can check with "Random ideas" as well, it's not only a problem with recent ideas. Among the ~12000 official ideas in Brainstorm, how many are duplicates?

Some people would say that it does not matter because bad or duplicated ideas are lost among tons of other uninteresting ideas, and that's a useless effort to track them and remove them from the server. They remind me people who sweep the dust under the carpet, where nobody can see it, because they are too lazy to remove it properly. I agree that the Brainstorm tool is not completely convenient to do that, but you don't need a powerful vacuum cleaner to remove the dust. The problem is that it is still possible to keep Brainstorm clean, but it will be much more difficult to do so with 100000 ideas.

Only few of us seem to report duplicates, and that may be the problem. I have proposed duplicates for ideas with > 40 positive votes, which means that at least 40 people voted without checking if the idea has been already proposed. We are more than enough to tag all duplicates among the 12000 ideas, but we are not rewarded as "duplicate hunters". Why not adding a counter for the number of sucessfully reported duplicates in the dashboard, as well as a ranking, similar to the idea vote ranking? The point is just to add up a funny feature that can create a positive feedback --taking care of other's duplicates will automatically make people more aware of their own duplicates.

(apart from that, some of my duplicate proposals have probably vanished while the duplicate was obvious to me. In the opposite, quite a few non-related ideas have been tagged as duplicates. I sometimes have the feeling that Brainstorm admins don't want to spend any extra time dealing with duplicate matters, and make many mistakes in sorting among duplicate proposals. In my opinion, even if they don't really care, we should, because ideas proposed here can be of benefit to the whole free software community, and not only to Ubuntu).

Enable user interface that recognises movement via a webcam
Written by granadajose the 10 Aug 08 at 14:09. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Many computers have a webcam. Movement recognition technologies have progressed in the last years (as in the EyeToy series). However, no operating system has still implemented this interface with the user.

Obviously, this kind of interface is not precise enough to provide a detailed control, but could be quite useful in some fields. For instance, it would be a great option to control document viewers, multimedia players, multimedia centers, and it also has many applications in gaming.

As this technology is quite new, it could be a great way to provide an additional value that other operating systems do not offer. New users could be attracted by this technology, and experienced users could use it in the applications they develop.

Download packages and dependencies without Internet access
Written by Demiurgo the 10 Aug 08 at 13:26. Category: Installation. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
Hello. I am newbie on linux world and i find it is very difficult to manage the software if you don't have Internet access, which is my case. I would like to know if it could be possible to download the packages with all the dependencies needed at once.

I'm sure i'm not the first one who ask about this but i would like to know if it would be feasible to do something like:

1º User does "dpkg -l > list.txt" and take that file to the computer with Internet (for example: at work place)

2º Then uses a browser at the package website to upload the file with the list of packages installed in its computer.

3º It selects the software which want to download

4º The site checks the dependencies needed with the packages list (list.txt) and download everything necessary.
It could also create a script to install all the downloaded packages in the user's computer.

Thank you and sorry if i'm repeatting something which someboby already talked about

PD. Sorry also about my english.
