Let Firefox don't full zoom by default
Written by ricardo the 18 Mar 08 at 15:16. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The new Firefox 3 (beta) in Hardy does a full zoom when you use Ctrl + Mouse Wheel up & down. Until now -in Firefox 2- this combo keys affects only to text, not to images, but now in Firefox 3 it affects to all the page elements.

In order to get the older behavior in Firefox 3, go to about:config and change the default value of browser.zoom.full to false.

Ubuntu must change that default value out of the box.

Least viewed ideas page
Written by Auzy the 7 Apr 08 at 01:44. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ideally, every idea should be shown to an equal number of people, so that they have a equal chance of succeeding. Some early ones may have been exposed to 2000 people, while some newer ones may only be seen by 20 or 30, in which case, they have no chance of succeeding.

I suggest a page which shows the "least viewed ideas". And make this the home page. Whilst in general it may be similar to latest ideas, after peak hours, it may turn out completely different.

This is the only way be can guarentee that the best ideas will float to the top. Otherwise, posting ideas is just a matter of good timing.

I should also point out, that by not including ideas you have voted for before, you also are exposed to new ideas

Show the total number of users on ubuntu Brainstorm
Written by sf_007 the 6 Apr 08 at 15:13. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would allow to see how many voters are out there, and provide a better context for the number of votes of any idea... The only thing we know for sure is that is has 4806 users, or more... because that is the total number of votes on the most popular idea... (to date)
This would be nice...

[edit] Seems to be on the way...

Support Unix (UFS) and Free BSD (FFS) file systems
Written by Techno.FM the 6 Apr 08 at 18:41. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu should read UFS (unix file system) and BSD FFS (fast file system) easily. FFS is open source so there is no reason Ubuntu shouldn't be able to detect hard drives partitioned with this.

It would make recovering data more easily. Also, dual boot would be more convenient since you could access both partitions.

Football Pool App Idea
Written by Monkey Talks the 3 Apr 08 at 04:21. Category: Office. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I think this probably classifies as an Office type app rather than games even though it is for football.

We have a little football pool for family & friends every year. Up 'til a couple years ago they used to have to fill out a grid in pen with everybody's picks and it took a LONG time and was prone to human error and penmanship problems. I'm not much into football but it seemed to be a good job for a PC so I've been handling the pool for the past couple years.

I found some software that handles it, but it is padded with a bunch of stuff nobody needs, I have to edit (simplify) the reports to suit our purposes and it seems like it would be a relatively easy application to write. If only I was a programmer. Seems like a simple, small database thing. A couple of features would make it extremely nice to use.

Here's the outline.
Beginning of season - enter team names and 2 or 3-letter team abbreviation (for printing in the grid). Enter weekly contests for the season (i.e. week 1 A vs. B, X vs Y - week 2 A vs Y, B vs X, etc.)
Weekly contest data is used to generate a report (pick sheet) for that week.

During season - Enter participants names, enter each participants picks by clicking Home vs Visitor down the list for that week.
After all participants picks are made, it prints a summary report (recap sheet) showing a list of participants and their picks on a grid.
That's pretty much it.

Extra features would be:
Generates a simple "Pick Sheet" web page so folks could make their picks on the net and when they hit "submit" it sends an email to the manager (i.e. me) to enter into the software.
Online picks could be directly imported into the program via email rather than have to enter each pick individually.
After picks are made, the recap sheets can be generated in both HTML (to be uploaded to a web page for viewing) and maybe RTF and/or PDF to be emailed to participants so they can print their own and follow along as the games progress.

This is for everyone on the Ubuntu desktop that uses Amarok and other KDE programs.

This is for everyone on the Kubuntu desktop that uses X-Chat and other GTK+ programs.

Include Automatix or somthing similar by default
Written by Jiran the 29 Feb 08 at 23:38. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
Pretty much every new person trying out Ubuntu has been told to get Automatix. For those not in-the-know, Automatix compiles a list of popular software/codecs/etc. that's useful to a new install of Ubuntu. It would be good to include this or something similar to installs of Ubuntu, thus helping out the user with new programs that don't come by default.

Disable IPV6
Written by M1r4g3 the 29 Feb 08 at 22:17. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Disable the IPV6 when installing, or at least give the choice to the user:
some Java applets don't deal very much with ipv6, causing the applet not to start / to crash.
To disable ipv6, the module ipv6 has to be blacklisted. And a reboot is necessary. Very bad experience!

Include Avant Window Navigator (AWN) by default
Written by CydeSwype the 28 Feb 08 at 23:59. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
In much the same way that Compiz got included as part of the default install (and got a lot of attention) AWN should be included (for those who can run it) as it adds an additional level of polish. Would help woo some Mac users probably too.

Install / Uninstall programs as in windows
Written by ibairg the 29 Feb 08 at 09:26. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Synaptic package manager is fine, but if I give a programme of ubuntu in a CD, and has units etc., there is always a problem, it would have to be double click and you are, and to remove the same, as in Windows.

Selectable Gnome panel layout "ideaology" on install
Written by jasonwjones the 28 Feb 08 at 17:34. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Every time I install and reinstall Ubuntu on a system (which is somewhat frequently), the first thing I always do when booting up is change the panels. Basically I make it a bit more like Windows (my personal preference). I know, I know, groan all you want. But here's what I do, and here's what I suspect many others do:

* Delete the entire top panel.

* Delete the Applications/Places/System widget and put in the simple Ubuntu "start" widget (saves a TON of screen real estate)

* Put the clock in the lower right of the screen (showing time with AM/PM only, no date)

* Put the volume control slider to the left of the clock

* Move the 'active windows' applet to the bottom as well.

* Move some of the other applets (system tray, etc) to the bottom.

Basically I just want to end up with one panel on the bottom, with my "start" menu, my window list, then my tray icons/volume/clock. Tada!

I know it's kind of a "one-off" and not terribly hard to do after installing, but I think it'd be pretty sweet to just have an option, or an advanced option, on installation, that would basically be like a radio button or something and would say

"Choose your desktop style:"

( ) Gnome classic
This style will have two panels, a gigantic start menu, with places, and a system menu, plus it will show the date on your clock. Also, when you run programs and maximize them, now you have a panel at the top, a menu on your windows, and another panel at the bottom.

GRUB (or LILO) choice at install
Written by gtarider the 29 Feb 08 at 19:04. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would like to have the choice at install time whether I want to use GRUB or LILO and especially where I want to install the loader. Currently, GRUB is default AND the loader will be put at the MBR by default. Therefor, I need the alternate CD but this is NOT for noobs. Please give a user the choise. I know that Knoppix and Kanotix works this way.
