Calling for The Next Linux Multi- Media Application Suite by Canonical

Everyone is familiar with Open Office’s office suite or Firefox/Mozzilla’s internet suite of Firefox and Thunderbird. Both suites have found homes in Linux and are a staple in many Linux distros.(IMHO) These two application suites have made Linux a viable OS in desktop computing. Yes, I do know other alternatives to OOO and FF are available and, competition is a good thing.
The time has now come for a multi-media Application Suite for the OSS community. Lets face it, Linux lacks many of the creative and multi-media tools that it needs to be a real desktop OS. Many new users to Ubuntu/ Linux just need a simple way to edit video, audio and pics. I know that many apps already exist for these needs but, most of these apps fall short and do not integrate with one another(IMHO).
Is there a really solid OSS video editor for the home video enthusiast? This is what I see with many OSS video editors: Cinelerra is overkill and it lacks the ability to capture DV video. Kino and Diva are just to basic. Pitivi just combines clips, Kdenlive is still very buggy (in beta) also, getting firewire to work is also a real pain for video editing applications too.
A simple to use video editor is much needed in the home user Ubuntu/ Linux desktop. While were talking about video Apps how about integrating a video editor with a separate DVD Video creation app? Is this starting to sound like iMovie and iDVD?
Image editing in Linux needs work too, Gimp is OK for simple editing but should combine a photo manager and needs some work with some of the core tools and its UI to make it easer for the home user. Once more, the Image app should be able to work with the video editing and DVD creation software.
If these apps were created and worked well, a natural side effect could be a push in the use of free or open source formats for media such as ogg. Having a multimedia application suite for creation that pushes open media formats such as OGG would be huge!
So the BIG question is how do you make money off developing this Application suite? Easy, all of these apps create multimedia files that either have hard copy equivalents or can be uploaded to sharing sites like youtube or flicker.

I think, a lot of people like to help with ubuntu development, but they don't know where to start. This includes not only programmers but also designers, music composers or just the normal ubuntu user.
So how about creating a website "howcanihelp.ubuntu.com" where everyone (except for C/C++ programmers ;-) ) can find out how to contribute?
Examples:
PHP Programmer -> help with Brainstorm Development, someproject.ubuntu.com needs a new Website, ...
Music Composer -> (don't know where this should link)
Graphic Artist -> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork
Foreign Language Native Speaker -> Translate Subtitles at screencasts.ubuntu.com,...
Beginner Ubuntu User -> (don't know if we find something for them :-) )
Advanced Ubuntu User -> Help people at IRC #ubuntu, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WikiToDo, join the Documentation Team...
Marketing Expert -> ...
and so on!

I know the Idea sound stupid . first time it hit me I said to my self what stupid idea too, but let me explain please
The first thing windows users said when you tell them about Linux/Ubuntu is "it is hard, u need to learn commands to use it" and they don't understand that 95% of the time we use CLI because we love it.
imagine this title in Ubuntu website "Ubuntu 8.10 is so easy you don't need terminal any more" thats will encourage windows people to try it, and for all of old Ubuntu users I'm sure if you know how to use CLI you will know how to install it

Turn off monitor without turning off computer

Like the title says, I want to turn off my monitor sometimes. With a hotkey. Complete with LCD backlight. Sure, you can usually do it by pressing the power key, but on a laptop you've got to close the lid, and sometimes I want to turn off the montitor without closing the lid, for example, when I'm using the notebook as a substitute audio player. Conserving the energy, yet having access to back/forward/volume/etc...

A great video editing software for GNU/Linux is now completely discontinued by Main Concept. It's name is Main Actor.
How about buying the code and release it ?
There is already a petition asking Main Concept to release the software under a free licence. Maybe Ubuntu could convince Main Concept easily to do so.
Have a look at this pages :

The title is an example of idea i think Brainstorm have to hide : Some ideas are too logical.
Examples :
- Add software 2.0 and not software 1.9
- Support acpi
- Speed Up boot time
- Better wi-fi support
- ...
In fact, these ideas are good ideas and everyone will vote for. But little ideas but good ideas are hidden because can't obtain same scores.
We can vote "for" or "against" an idea. We could clic on a "too logical" button and if "too logical" have a important score we hide this ideas. A visitor could watch all ideas, but by defaut done and "too logical" should be hides.

Create a Ubuntu variant with lots of freely available games and trial versions of Linux based games. This should allow more gamers to try out Ubuntu. Doesn't matter even if the distro becomes bigger than a DVD or two. Lots of games available in the market are anyway huge.

Update propritary drivers

The restricted driver manager is a quite good utility, especially for new users. But often the automatic driver installation process gets useless if the used video card is not supported by the old driver in the ubuntu repository. The User has to download the new driver from the vendor's website and install it manually. This causes several problems, most irritating might be the required reinstall on kernel updates, not to speak of the lack of comfort for the average user.
And it's not only the support of new hardware, also new features are introduced with newer driver versions (e.g. AIGLX in the fglrx one).
So I think, these drivers should be updated by the update manager, too.

It would be great to have a phone number that people could call and ask questions.
It would be quite simple and CHEAP to setup.
It would cost between 30 USD and 60 dollars a year to run. By getting a phone number via Gizmo or Skype. Then simply have calls forwarded to available operators.
Qualified volunteers, could then be ready to answer questions when they have time. The IRC support is great, but it is very difficult to get into a 1 on 1 conversation with someone that actually has time and patience.

They might add GNU/Linux to the name, example:
Ubuntu GNU/Linux.
Sometimes Cononical refers to Ubuntu as Ubuntu Linux, and other people more...
Linux is only the kernel of the OS, the complete OS is named GNU/Linux.
Ubuntu as son of Debian GNU/Linux, must use GNU/Linux in its name.
It's GNU/Linux, dammit....

I know, this idea is really hard to implement, but ...
Google uses Linux a lot, Google (unlike many other big players in the business) supports Linux, Google distributes Linux applications and there's the (Google sponsored/influenced) gOS deriviate of Ubuntu. Google is built into Firefox (search, anti phishing, ...) and Linux users are less likely to use Microsoft/Yahoo services. Come on, Google: Put Wubi on your homepage!
This applies for all other companies, too.

Make a quiz game in Edubuntu.
What is chemical formula for water? H2O
What is capital of Sweden? Stockholm
What language do they speak in India? Hindi
This can teach kids to be smart. For extra fun it can have limited time for answer. If kid don't know answer, they can get a hint.
This becomes game + education. Fun educational game for kids who use Edubuntu! :)

Free Software Real Audio Streams

I would like a way to play RealAudio streams using FREE SOFTWARE (Free as in Freedom, in other words Open Source). I don't want to bloat my computer with proprietary garbage like RealAudio. I want to be able to use VLC, MPlayer, or even Amarok to open a RealAudio stream. I know it is possible, because if you open up the files in a text editor, you can copy and paste the URL into a web browser, download another file, open that file with a text editor, and copy and paste that link into MPlayer. This is FAR from practical, though.

Would be really useful to create applications like theese to manage your system:
- Ubuntu Configuration Tool: A control Center that allows you to configure every aspect of your system with GUI linked to gconf-editor.
- Ubuntu Package Manager: How about a SINGLE app to installl your software? This app should merge Synaptic, Add/Remove and Update Notifier.
Theese concepts worked for many distros including the cute daughter of Ubuntu: LinuxMint (This distro has its own ''MintSoftware'' like MintMenu, MintInstall, MintDesktop... etc...

Expand espeak to "sing" text

I think it would be cool if you could allow espeak to sing songs through use of midi files.
Here's how it would work:
*You create (or use a current) midi song, and add lyrics so that each syllable corresponds to a single note.
*You head to a terminal and type in $espeak -p song.midi -f lyrics.txt
*Using its built in pitch parameter, espeak would proceed to sing your song.
*You could tell it to sing happy birthday based on calendar events, etc. The possibilities are endless!
