Create a good, really good, media player

In windows, there is The KMPlayer, one of the best media players i ever used, not a single file that would play on any other player refused to play there.
In ubuntu I tried many media players, but not even one seemed at least good, sure there are good music players, but video players... thats a different story...
Seek bars make fun of me and make me despair, some files dont have sound, others crash... controling the volume is not very "easy"...
If a Media Player for linux would at least be as good as this program, then ubuntu would be as good as windows in this aspect.
If ubuntu cant even play media files properly, even having to use restricted codecs, it is hard to be widely adopted...

How difficult would it be to implement a single login?

OpenID will be implemented as the single-sign-on solution for Ubuntu websites.

... and make this a requirement of updates, that transition from one version to the next always happens painlessly.
I have personally only tried updating Ubuntu 3 times and only once has it worked (almost) flawlessly, this was for the transition to Gutsy. I say almost because some things about the bootloader were not exactly the way they were supposed to be.
The "live" transition from Gutsy to Hardy beta via "sudo update-manager --devel-release" didn't complete, and I haven't figured out why. Before that, the update to 7.04 was a major pain in the ass too.
I think it's very important that people can be confident in letting their distro be updated. And for that it must be made a requirement that the updater behaves itself at all times.

There are lot of people having troubles syncing their devices (pda, smartphones, etc.) with ubuntu. At this poing there is only one solution available, multisync, and works for only a few devices, and it's very limited on their functions.
And I think, this is a very important point for lots of people.
**Suggestions from duplicate idea 397 work on that idea :
1) Clean up the Opensync and SyncML plugin packages to work properly with Evolution by default.
2) Set up an official Ubuntu SyncML server for Ubuntu users.
3) Possibly clean up open source SyncML clients for the different mobile platforms.
Developer comments
The current status of mobile devices synchronization in Linux is generally is quite shaky. It *can* work but it's a lot of work usually. There are a few efforts around but there's no single project that works in the majority of the situations.
This is also caused by manufacturers not using a single synchronization protocol. The most promising project now is OpenSync[1] which supports basically SyncML 1.1 and the Nokia variation and it works with several degrees of success between phones and desktops but the project itself is in a constant alpha state with a lot of issues, the GUI is simplistic and there are no integrated resources to sync with online contacts/calendars
like Google's. This can be overcome by preparing Evolution and/or Thunderbird to do it.
In short, despite the infrastructure is mostly there, we need work to make it a seamless experience for the user.
Bear in mind that this is a huge effort. Synchronization looks simple but there's a lot of factors and situations that need to be addressed like how to synchronize devices with different capabilities and how to keep 3 way synchronizations (desktop, online and mobile).

Offer to create a separate /home partition and use existing ones

A separate partition for /home has been proposed for a long time in the forums. It implies some risks, though, so based on disk size Ubiquity should estimate the amount of space that should be left for / or whether a separate partition should be made at all. Then...
-The first time an user installs Ubuntu, he is given the option to set a separate /home. This option is selected by default, with a size for each partition based on a sane guess:
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/7958/firstinstallaro2.png
-Of course, he can just choose not to set a separate /home. This option will be selected by default if the results of the system test suggest that's the best thing to do.
http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/6498/firstinstallbfs6.png
-Manual install is also possible. Selecting it greys out everything related to separate /home, since it's implied that the user doesn't want to be guided.
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7976/firstinstallcvc2.png
-If the user set a separate /home, the next time he installs Ubuntu a new option appears and is selected by default, prompting to use the existing /home partition. All other options are still available, though.
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/9034/secondinstalliq1.png

Developer comments
I have always used a separate /home as well. Keeping /home after reinstallations is one major reason which has been mitigated by ubiquity preserving /home now (I didn't test that yet, though).
Either way ubiquity (the Live CD installer) should point this out clearly.
The other reason is that I want to use it from multiple Linux installations, but that's mostly a geek use case.
I have no idea what size / and /home should have by default,
I always use 6 GB for / and the rest for /home, but if someone wants to use huge databases, that'll break.
Thus I think we should stick to our current partitioning and rather improve the UI for keeping /home. There is always manual partitioning for people who actually care.

Prioritise Usability & Usefulness over politics at all costs.

Many users here fail to recognise that the mainstream crowd does not care about politics, and are only voting for ideas that benefit technical users. They should be looking at the usefulness of an idea.
I propose that the Ubuntu development team focus's on usability, rather then politics at all costs, even if it means we lose out on "protests". Voting for this is more to work out the demographic of users, so more ideas of relevence can be posted. If the majority of users prefer to join protests, then we wont post ideas which go against our software morals.
In some cases, it makes sense (like not supporting DVD's out of the box, or MP3's or whatever). In most cases, people aren't looking at it at its usefulness
Some examples of cases where common sense hasn't reigned?
- Docx support in openoffice.
Voted down for politics. Neither geeks nor newbies like having to ask for a copy of a document saved again, its a waste of time. Furthermore, since Microsoft and Apple support them (which is the majority of the market who uses office suites), our protest only inconveniances users, because it sure as hell wont change users minds.
- GUI Server and Non-Gui server.
Voted down, because "all admins should be hardcore console users". Invalid, because I have set up dozens of windows, linux (RHEL and others) and OSX servers. And Ubuntu server sits out as a sore thumb. Only linux admins can touch it. Some servers I set up, users want to be able to easily do something simple like add a new user. And anyone here who did gui design, knows GUI's make configuration easier then editing files if designed correctly, and constrains users from making mistakes. Its also easier to manage a mailserver for instance with a proper administration GUI, then a console type application.
- Linux doesn't get viruses and is more secure then windows.
So therefore, having a centralised security centre (which is way too similar to windows) is bad. Wrong, the whole statement. Because people have gotten so used to defending linux in chatrooms, they fail to look to the future, or vote based on logic.

When I paste a file (e.g file.pdf) into a folder containing a file with the same name nautilus pops up this:
---------------------------------------------
A file named "file.pdf" already exists. Do you want to replace it?
The file already exists in "temp2". Replacing it will overwrite its contents.
Options are only "skip" and "replace"
----------------------------------------------
not very useful: there should be an option "rename" which renames the pasted file to file_1.pdf or file_DATE.pdf or something like that.
also: it does not say the sizes of the files and the date modified which makes it hard to say which file is newer.
Bye, cya

Launchpad: Archive bugs from previous releases

Ubuntu's Launchpad bug tracking tool is littered with bugs that exist in previous, unsupported releases. I think it might be easier to spot the big ones if there were less clutter while browsing.
I propose two possible solutions.
1) Mark all obsolete releases' bugs as Archived and only available via an advanced search
2) Allow users to filter easier the release they wish to concentrate on. Currently the tagging mechanism doesn't allow for fine-grained tuning (Advanced Search, Series) or the options are not intuitive enough.

Synchronize updates from the 'Main server' to the mirrors faster

We're all eager to get the latest updates as soon as possible.
Unfortunately sometimes we have to wait a bit unnecessary long for the updates, as there is a delay before the updates can reach the local mirrors from the 'Main server' repository.
This has led that some people use the Main server instead of their local mirror.
I suggest to speed up the synchronization, so we don't have to wait so long for new updates.

Remove Ebay from default search engines list in firefox

Based on idea 5321, by Eldmannen (about removing yahoo).
We should remove ebay from the default installed searches, because:
- It reduces competition with other auction sites.
- Recently there was a uproar about changes in ebay which make in some case make it unfair. I agree!
- Ebay VERY heavily pushes Paypal, which is acknowledged by many to be very dodgy. A lot of people know someone who has been screwed by ebay. And here in aus, I had to upgrade my account because they had a bug which prevented me accessing my money (which is very unprofessional). The freenet Project owner was also screwed by ebay (and it demonstrated they don't research at all claims made against customers), and another friend of mine was charged 2x the amount he was supposed to be receiving because someone used a stolen credit card against him (so seems they profit from illegal credit cards).
- If ebay was a bank, they would have a 24/7 riot outside their building by customers who were screwed.
- Ebay doesn't exactly listen to feedback. If are a typical large company, where you have no way of providing feedback (if you scream at them over the phone, maybe they will let you speak to a manager). But they clearly dont care much (no forums).
Its to our advantage to promote competition within the auction sites. More competition means lower costs for us, and better payment methods. We should try to encourage the development of a world wide auction site that is more consumer/seller friendly, that actually promotes active feedback and improvement.
There is nothing stopping a patch being applied to the firefox code to prevent ebay being a default search engine (and it shouldn't be hard to do).

Ubuntu can customize firefox for better experience my suggestions are :
1-Add Wikipedia by default to the search-plugin below the google one.
2-change the default searchplugin [Google], because it's already there in the address, location bar.
3-add ubuntu search plugins , like the packages search engines one.
4-make openintab for search plugins in firefox by default true.

downloads should go to $HOME/Downloads. XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR should be set to "$HOME/Downloads" instead of "$HOME/Desktop" in the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs.
This Downloads folder should be the default download location for firefox and this folder should be bookmarked in nautilus by xdg-user-dirs-gtk (like Music,Videos,Pictures and Documents).
RATIONALE :
* less cluttered desktop and/or homedir
* still easy to access your downloads

save personal settings and configuration files on personal usb stick

I think a tool/deamon that save the users setting on a usb stick would be nice.
Backup configuration files and settings like...
- GnuPG keys
- e-mail settings
- contact list
- unit settings (metric/imperial)
- paper size (A4/letter)
- currency
- timezone
- locale settings
- printer configuration
- network configuration
- ...
It should basically do what Apple .Mac sync service does, but on USB-Sticks. This tool should not be an entire backup tool for all kind of data! Only small configuration settings and perhaps some desktop gadgets.
After first time configuration, it could automatically sync the data throught a background daemon started by d-bus, after the usb stick is connected, per example. If a user has GnuPG installed, the possibility to encrypt the data should be offered to the user.
During install, if the usb stick is present, the installer could prompt for import the settings and configure all of them. This would accelerate and simplify the entire installation process.
