Personalized Programs to Ubuntu

Programs to the repository of Ubuntu should have the same Visual theme for icons and splash screen.
At least for the main programs like: openoffice, Gimp; Evolution; Amsn, Brasero, players, Torrents, Inkscape, Avidemux, K3B and others.
In realy I would like to see a personalized and exclusive version of the programs to Ubuntu, with more means, options of configuration and elegant design and professinal.

Make all the icons 3D for making more effects possible

Maybe it is possible to make all the icons 3D.
When all icons are 3D there are more options for effects.
For example in AWN (Avant Window Navigator).
Ubunt will also be innovative because other operating systems only have 2D icons.

Encourage Users to work with Free Sotfware Formats

I've been thinking... there is a lot of trouble with mp3, avi, wma, and all those multimedia formats. (I know legal issues) So, why not making EASIER and a smoother transition to free formats like Ogg. Ogg is actually BETTER than mp3.
Its about giving information, making easier things.
Example:
- When user tries to reproduce mp3 file:
offer 2 options, 1) convert to Ogg format and talk about advantages of this format, 2) download proprietary codecs
- Every media player should ask this to the user on first run and convert it too if needed.
This could be a solution with all the trouble with proprietary media files.
FEEL FREE TO SUGGEST ANY OTHER WAY TO GET TO THE SAME OBJECTIVE, USE FREE FORMATS.

katapult should prioritize often used commands

As written above, katapult should remember the commands used most often and offer those first when starting to type the command. Example:
Currently, when I want to start konqueror here is what I type in katapult and what programm is offered to be run:
k K3b
ko Kolf
kon Konsole
konq Konquest
konqu Konquest
konque Konquest
konquer Konqueror
...
Instead I think katapult should offer to start konqueror (in this example) from the first letter on (after I used katapult to start konquerer a few times of course).
I think it is very annoying to have to type 7 letters each and every time I want to start konqueror.

There is NO WAY of doing this actually and it really pisses me off and a lot of people.
In Windows doesnt happen, in MacOS doesnt happen. I know security is important, but is also user experience.
Ubuntu has longer booting times, which seem even longer since you cant go to piss and have internet when you come back.
Have you seen 2001: A Space Odyssey???? "IM SORRY... I CANT LET YOU DO THAT..." This is how I feel... If my computer gets screwed, its MY problem.
I think this should be enabled by default, because I bet 90% of users would get tired of writting the password every time! But if not, just create an easy way to do it!

Not an idea
|
***Please read before you vote down, I know that may be difficult for some of you Microsoft/Apple hating fanatics.
***I would like to thank those of you who bothered to provide reasonable feedback even if you down-voted. See, its not that hard!
That's right ladies and gentlemen, the first step at offering usability is to offer compatibility. Bring an end to this antiquated ideology that Linux is somehow "different", because its not. Shuttleworth challenges us that in two years Ubuntu will surpass Apple in usability. How exactly is that supposed to happen if every upcoming release brings nothing new to the table. Why aren't the developers willing to try something NEW, RADICAL, and SPONTANEOUS???
Tools like GTK are not good enough anymore. Why cling to the design fundamentals of projects not willing to change their interface approach. Linux in reality is either gnome or kde. No distro wants to evolve beyond that. I once suggested an idea to fork Gnome, but that was too radical for you. I suggested that Ubuntu publish human interface guidelines, but that wasn't good enough. One of the top ideas is to hold a contest at DeviantArt, and that was brushed to the side after 4 months. (Its in the 'work in progress' but still ignored, read the dev comments!) Seriously, the Gnome, Openoffice, and Ubuntu developers have the aesthetic sensibilities of a cinder blog.
Update: Not trying to troll, just a wake-up call. Based on the voting I see you guys aren't interested in making a good OS. What linux is today: Theme + Some Program's + Package System, all bundles into a downloadable.iso. WTF? Where is the innovation in that?? Every three months a new distro, for what purpose, all of them useless. You're right, linux is about choice, the choice to suck, be incompatible, be difficult to use, and just plain frustrating. But go ahead and keep submitting those ideas mates, because may be in 10-15 years, Ubuntu will have caught up to the rest of the world.
You want ideas? HERE!
Why no integration between openoffice and firefox/thunderbird?
Why such poor enterprise support?
Why no unified short-cuts?

This is a subject well discussed on forums if ubuntu should use 1 or 2 panels as a default desktop layout.
So, what happens if on first boot the user is given an option to select which one is about to use.
1.- Standard Top-Bottom panel with Applications/Places/System menu.
Screenshot:
http://tintafantasma.net/imagenes/ubuntu804.jpg
2.- Single-Bottom Panel with gnome main menu and gnome control center.
Screenshot:

This is a concept that would help user to learn Ubuntu easily, using what user is familiar with.

let's vote and discuss whether it would be good if we can see who and how voted our ideas. i think this after i have read http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/11020/ "Admin - check that negative voted ideas not being voted by Other OS supporters"
maybe, it is better to make this optional: selectable by voter?. or may be make it selectable by idea poster: that he can refuse anonymous votes...
i forgot, but adding this to description (after some 20 minutes): i am going to vote -1.
and i am adding: it is also after i wrote an idea, but it has -9 votes now but nobody said why he votes down. that it is: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/11098/ "make that "9gb drive"s and mounting them as "disk-1" other way"

Super-Package to make Ubuntu the most easiest possible

Today if you want, for example, look at (watch) all the videos sizes(formats) , you must write (type) in the terminal :
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mpegdemux gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad faad ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse lame lame-extras libfaad2-0 libmjpegtools0c2a mjpegtools sox toolame mpeg2dec a52dec mpg321 vorbis-tools libdvdcss2 libdvdnav4 mencoder mplayer mplayer-fonts mplayer-skins vlc w32codecs
It is very friendly and made for the general public !
Built what you can call Super-Package or (Meta-Package) for example for Vidéos: Super-Package : "video".
and now you must only tape in the terminal:
sudo apt-get install video
and all which is written higher will be settled, no more need to make of search(research) on internet .
Of course you can built Super-package for linked software (as do LAMP ) or all that you can imagine in the other domain .
Quite sorry for my English (i'm French),Forgive my lack of nuances !

When I read the ideas, most of the time I am curious to know where the users are from, so the idea is to:
- OPTIONALLY have a little flag attached to the side of your name specifying your nationality!
- In the future it could be useful to see where is ubuntu receiving more contributions from.
- We could see also which countries are having more problems with language, accessibility an so on.
Off course, if you don't want your country represented you may just hide it naturally.
-----------------------------------------
Hello, no need for more negatives here! I had already lerned the lesson that nationality is the worst thing in the world and very harmful for this forum even optionally.
Furthermore, once an idea gets negative, no way to recover since people see the negative number before voting :-(

A lot of us use WINE to run the Windows version of firefox. I use Firefox on ubuntu, but I like my Add-ons and themes for it. When I use Windows, I can install all I want. In ubuntu when I use firefox, It says, "This add-on is not availible in Linux" or something in that manner. We should fix that, I'm sure everyone hates being confused in which browser to use, either Firefox or Firefox.

Sex up Ubuntu with *attractive* wallpaper

Ubuntu has the human theme throughout, but no skin. Why not put some actual human being selections to go with the human theme.
My idea is that there should be desktop wallpaper available with attractive models with some actual skin showing. Not nude or so far as porn, mind you... say, beach attire or lingerie: calendar girls/guys. I think these wallpapers should be easily available with a few clicks whether or not they are on the install CD.
Lets not be prudes... probably most of our computers are used at home, and it would be fun. It would distinguish Ubuntu from uptight stuffy corporate-only alternative operating systems.
I think it would be fun for some machines (probably not for work though).
[Addendum: wow, getting some pushback from the no-sexo's. What a shock]

Ubuntu CS - Coming of age in 2009

The battle lines were being drawn in 2008 .. A strategy
was being developed at Canonical LTD that would truly
shock the Windows world. A move that would truly level
the playing field.
A broad spectrum license agreement with Virtual Bridges,
developers of Win4Lin Desktop 5. This piece of software
delivers. Runs 99% of all Windows apps with ease.
Think in terms of robust mature stability. Listen to the
end users. Give them what they need. Client, server and
gaming frameworks all in one package by default.
And Windows compatibility
Ubuntu CS Phoenix .. Coming to a computer near you
Spring 2009
Windows Vista was a decided disaster ..
Windows Me 2008 ..
Overpriced and quirky
Ubuntu offers alternatives. If Canonical LTD is able
to take advantage of its strategic positioning over
the next year
innovating coding and a major release in the spring
of 2009 will put the computing world on edge .. If
the powers that be @ C LTD had any smarts at all I
feel certain that they advertised it in every media

when a user clicks on create new folder.he suggested with only
new folder as a name to that folder.i have seen users in windows who even doesnt even care to rename it to something relative like photos, games, videos etc.
i suggest the same some easy choices when creating folder
automatically name it to photos,videos,songs,docs/documents,leisure,past,memories etc.
these file names doesnt appear until clicked "create new folder".also they appear as editable names/use arrow keys to scroll to different name.save this listed names in /home/foldernames.txt file(hidden and editable).
i saw this nice feature in alzip archive application in windows which gives bird names like cuckoo etc.
