Remove Music/Video/Pictures folders again   forum
Written by Dutchy the 29 Feb 08 at 23:15. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I recently installed Ubuntu again and I came to a scary conclusion after installation! Some folders appeared in my /home folder? I did not ask for them to be there

Is this an attempt to imitate Windows? There, too, I see strange folders in the 'My Documents' folder. Is this an attempt to make windows users 'feel at home' in Ubuntu?

Personally, I know very few people who actually use these folders.

What I'm trying to say is, maybe we should stick to our own standards and ideas rather than trying to lure Windows users over by imitating them?

Encourage Users to work with Free Sotfware Formats
Written by retj the 5 Aug 08 at 17:28. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I've been thinking... there is a lot of trouble with mp3, avi, wma, and all those multimedia formats. (I know legal issues) So, why not making EASIER and a smoother transition to free formats like Ogg. Ogg is actually BETTER than mp3.

Its about giving information, making easier things.
Example:

- When user tries to reproduce mp3 file:
offer 2 options, 1) convert to Ogg format and talk about advantages of this format, 2) download proprietary codecs

- Every media player should ask this to the user on first run and convert it too if needed.

This could be a solution with all the trouble with proprietary media files.

FEEL FREE TO SUGGEST ANY OTHER WAY TO GET TO THE SAME OBJECTIVE, USE FREE FORMATS.

Change the ubuntu brainstorm logo to use a compact fluorescent bulb
Written by andrewpmk the 1 Mar 08 at 02:25. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Incandescent light bulbs are obsolete and soon to be banned in many countries. We should change the light bulb in the ubuntu brainstorm logo to an energy-saving Compact Fluorescent light bulb. :)

Make all the icons 3D for making more effects possible
Written by ubby the 5 Aug 08 at 15:59. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Maybe it is possible to make all the icons 3D.
When all icons are 3D there are more options for effects.
For example in AWN (Avant Window Navigator).

Ubunt will also be innovative because other operating systems only have 2D icons.

katapult should prioritize often used commands
Written by danielwbn the 4 Aug 08 at 10:12. Category: Accessibility. Related to: KDE. New
As written above, katapult should remember the commands used most often and offer those first when starting to type the command. Example:
Currently, when I want to start konqueror here is what I type in katapult and what programm is offered to be run:

k K3b
ko Kolf
kon Konsole
konq Konquest
konqu Konquest
konque Konquest
konquer Konqueror
...

Instead I think katapult should offer to start konqueror (in this example) from the first letter on (after I used katapult to start konquerer a few times of course).
I think it is very annoying to have to type 7 letters each and every time I want to start konqueror.

Kubuntu 9.04: Desktop cube by default
Written by droetker the 4 Aug 08 at 13:01. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Kubuntu. New
The desktop cube will be integrated during the google summer of code into KDE 4.2, which apparently will pe base of (K)Ubuntu 9.04.
I would like to see the desktop cube by default then - it is one of the eye candies that are really useful/good (and btw: a thing Windows and OSX does NOT have, at least noct within the standard OS).

Consider Releasing Kubuntu Intrepid with late beta KOffice 2/Amarok 2/K3B 2
Written by derubermensch the 31 Jul 08 at 12:59. Category: System. Related to: Kubuntu. Already implemented
The current blueprint for Kubuntu Intrepid indicates that where analogous KDE 4 packages aren't stable, their KDE 3.5 equivalents will be used instead. I submit however that it should at least be considered that Kubuntu Intrepid be shipped with KOffice 2, Amarok 2, K3B 2, and KTorrent 2 if any package is near production release (i.e, a Release Candidate has been released, or the last Beta before Release Candidacy). I think that these packages offer a greater KDE4 experience than their KDE 3.5 counterparts and users would generally appreciate it moreso if they were included.

Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 was released with Firefox 3 still in beta, and this was done with the confidence that the production release would soon follow. What was key here was the trust in the Mozilla developers to deliver, and I think it would go a ways to show that same trust to KDE developers if Kubuntu is to finally receive the first-class support Intrepid apparently is to be blessed with.

Moreover, Intrepid is not a LTS release; support for it ends six months after release. The possible repercussions for including the packages shouldn't be as alarming as the inclusion of beta software in a LTS release.

Merge all sound tools into ONE
Written by Darvon the 2 Jul 08 at 11:39. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There are the usual sound options, there is alsamixer, there is pulseaudio, there are codecs for sound in specific programs etc.
It would be better to have ONE place to configure everything, which has to do with sound.

WEB GUI translation for all languages
Written by adamcios the 2 Mar 08 at 14:55. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
To improve translation of every program in linux it will be a really great idea to create WEB interface which allow to translate selected application from one language to another. interface should inlcude such fields like :
Source language: (especially eglish)
Target language:
and
Application: (for instance Evolution, kOffice or other we choose to translate)
and then active table to introduce any changes.

This active table will be created automatically from .PO files. And at the end of the table the button "submit" to accept our changes.

I dont know how to use and translate PO files and i dont understand gettext program and other programs used in translation files. I try to use KBABEL but i dont know where can I find the newest PO files and after translation where should i send it etc. When u do something like this online we always have actually PO and u can automaticly send to inventor of the application.

Next Ubuntu LTS release should be on the shelves of shops
Written by idaho06 the 4 Mar 08 at 09:32. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
First of all, sorry about my bad english.

Perhaps, Ubuntu 8.4 will not be ready, but the next Long Time Support release should be available in the malls and specialized computer shops.

I think in a box with a complete manual book written in the language of the country and a pair of disks. A double sided DVD and a double sided CD with the 32 and 64 bit versions of UBUNTU.

This box should have a reasonable price and perhaps a discount in Canonical support to the user.

Edit: People comment that this box should support for restricted/commercial codecs/players/multimedia. I agree with that. The price have to be low and include the royalties about these technologies.

Ability to attach Plasmoids to Dashboard
Written by retj the 18 Jul 08 at 04:51. Category: System. Related to: Kubuntu. New
Kubuntu Intrepid Ibex Feature Request:

Right now you have your plasmoids on your desktop, only. The dashboard function just brings them to the front when needed.
I suggest that, in addition to this actual way to manage your plasmoids, have the option to attach them to the dashboard, same way that Mac OS X works. (so the user would have the option that works best for him/her)

Brainstorm: Vote Properly
Written by acheong87 the 29 Feb 08 at 09:14. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Since voting is free and unlimited, most users will naturally vote up _any_ idea that simply "sounds good". This is quite a detrimental quality of Brainstorm, because each vote does not necessarily represent the user's priorities! Suppose each user was given 3 voting points per day. Then, the user would start prioritizing what is most important to him or her. The user would vote for their top preferences, and "bookmark" other ideas for future consideration.

"But Brainstorm's not gonna change the entire system to give out voting points!"

True; this aspect of Brainstorm probably cannot be changed. So the least you can do is vote _properly_. Vote UP ideas you really need or have been waiting for. DON'T VOTE ideas that simply "sound good", if it's not as important as the ideas you've already voted for. Vote DOWN ideas that you don't agree with, or ideas that are irrelevant.

"But everyone else is voting for whatever 'sounds good'! So if I 'vote properly', then won't my votes be underrepresented?!"

At first glance, this sounds like a game-theory problem with no favorable outcome. However, I still think that voting properly _will_ make a difference, and will _not_ result in your vote being underrepresented. The more ideas you vote for, the more you decrease the gap between "important" and "not-important" items. By voting properly, you contribute to the _quality_ of each vote.

Sex up Ubuntu with *attractive* wallpaper
Written by tomwaits the 27 Jun 08 at 06:10. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Ubuntu has the human theme throughout, but no skin. Why not put some actual human being selections to go with the human theme.

My idea is that there should be desktop wallpaper available with attractive models with some actual skin showing. Not nude or so far as porn, mind you... say, beach attire or lingerie: calendar girls/guys. I think these wallpapers should be easily available with a few clicks whether or not they are on the install CD.

Lets not be prudes... probably most of our computers are used at home, and it would be fun. It would distinguish Ubuntu from uptight stuffy corporate-only alternative operating systems.

I think it would be fun for some machines (probably not for work though).

[Addendum: wow, getting some pushback from the no-sexo's. What a shock]

I think that when you are playing music though you speakers, if there's a lot of bass or it really loud it should make your windows wiggle a bit if you the feature enabled.

Ubuntu Marketing Idea (Possible 5 million downloads)
Written by sonu the 20 Jun 08 at 08:06. Category: Marketing. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This idea is so good - I don't know why somebody hadn't thought of it before!

We all know Firefox is open-source, openOffice is open-source and Ubuntu is open-source! We also know that the most popular software out of the three is Firfox with millions upon millions of users. Ubuntu ships Firefox and openOffice with most of its OS's. So why hasn't Ubuntu approached Mozilla & openOffice about promoting Ubuntu on Mozilla's & openOffices' websites?

Imagine if Mozilla sent out a message (or opened a new tab in the browser) telling them about trying out Ubuntu (outlining the benefits of Ubuntu over Windows) -imaging how many people would see this message! Imagine the possible downloads (5 million maybe! maybe way more!!). If I remember correctly, Microsoft strangled Netscape (which now has taken the form of open-source Mozilla and thriving)...now its pay-back time!

Even if people don't try Ubuntu at least they will be exposed to a new alternative; private/home users will know there is something other than Windows out there, small/medium/large businesses will know there are alternatives out there (maybe they don't want to ditch Windows but they might want to save costs and try openOffice or
openExchange) and most importantly government entities will come to know of these software alternatives as well.

So basically a sort of link exchange between Ubuntu, Mozilla and openOffice will help each other and the open-source community in general. Remember people - a great product is useless if no-one knows about it! - And with my idea I think Ubuntu/Mozilla/openOffice will get the exposure they need.

So write an email (as I already have) to Ubuntu, Mozilla and openOffice about a marketing partnership - and convince Mozilla its time to stick the knife into Microsoft.

- Please do point out any shortcomings or improvements with the idea.

Centralize foreign documentations (en+fr+de+sp+etc...)
Written by prometee the 20 Jun 08 at 07:54. Category: Documentation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
All the Ubuntu sites have many pages of documentation, so why we don't regroup all this pages under a group of website whit possibilities to traduce the different pages ?

Example :
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TheNameOfAnApplication
https://help-fr.ubuntu.com/community/TheNameOfAnApplication
https://help-de.ubuntu.com/community/TheNameOfAnApplication
https://help-sp.ubuntu.com/community/TheNameOfAnApplication
etc

Or

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TheNameOfAnApplication
http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/TheNameOfAnApplication
http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/TheNameOfAnApplication
http://doc.ubuntu-es.org/TheNameOfAnApplication
etc, with link or select option to choice the language of the page...

Or migrate the actual websites to an harmonized URL like in my first proposition.

It is very frustrating when you get caught out after 30 boots and the system does a full check. Especially if you are about to give a presentation or you just need to read one bit of information. The Ubuntu team have done a great job of speeding up the boot time but this irritation undoes all the good work.

Possible solutions and further explanation:

This is implemented in Hardy Heron.
You can press the escape key to cancel the disk check.

Ubuntu Brainstorm for each country. The other non-English-speaking.
Written by nq6 the 2 Mar 08 at 01:41. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
That the Ubuntu Brainstorm was a fantastic idea nobody doubts, the more it is accessible only to people who speak English. I think every parent, or should have yours. China, Germany, France, Brazil, Italy, Arabic, Greek, and other non-English-speaking countries.

That would be great, because everyone could participate suggesting their ideas without the limitation of language. It would also be very good for Canonical know what users think of each country.

If the Ubuntu distro wants to be an international, and be dedicated to all with simplicity. It should eliminate this barrier.

I suggest that initially the countries below has its own Ubuntu Brainstorm.

Brazil
Russia
Japan
Greece
Italy
Spain
Germany
China
Korea
France
Netherlands
Arab Countries
