Would be nice to just select, right click menu and print selection, on the website, so you won't print all the menus and advertisements together.

Intel provides onboard video although most people asking support for nvdia and ati cards and they have envy that can configure the card and drivers it will search.but intel motherboards are very popular,onboard video is not configured correctly so to correct this we need frontend,common to all intel based motherboards like starting from 845gvsr,mine to latest x48.additionally it will help users to configure/correct screen resolution problems.
there are manuals to configure xorg and also installing intel945 drivers issue.but i doubt messing up system,so it will be great help.
alternatively if this is not possible gui to intel 945.it can be default or
in repository because most of the people want it to be default

Quick test option

A quick test series that detects and tests working and/or recognized components would be very helpful.
I rebuild/refurbish desktop/laptop pc's (turn those discarded "slow" XP boxes into fresh and fast X/K/Ubuntu machines) - and it's usually easy to "see" that video works, but finding a quick test for things like the sound is always a challenge. I know there are other hardware bits that it would be good to see that the system thinks is working (maybe something with "lshw" is a start?).
Windows hardware profiles under "my computer" used to show "working" or "?" for system bits it recognized and believed were working (like the Ethernet card - it saw it but the drivers were missing and you were off on an Internet search).
A combination list that shows what is recognized by Ubuntu and what Ubuntu thinks is working correctly along with a "click to test" icon would make validating a fresh installation simple and quick without any lagging problems (like getting a freshly installed pc to a non-Ubuntu user and they can't find how to fix the microphone since they are new and easily discouraged).
Next steps would be for that chart to offer advice on how to get those components working (website link, .deb, compile from source, no current solution for this device, etc).
This test suite could be located either at the liveCD first menu (initial screen where options are run, install, memtest, etc are located) as that would be the fastest, or as an icon on the liveCD desktop after boot-up (which would make better sense as all the normal hardware sensing programs have been run and the system is ready to use or test).

Brainstorm: Show vote count on ideas

ATM you can only see the sum of votes for each idea, e.g. 15
But 15 could mean 0(-) and 15(+) or 545(-) and 560(+)
That's adifference - it would be good to see the absolute vote count as well, something like:
532 votes for this idea 12 (-) and 520 (+)

Enhance Drivers manager
|
|

The point here is that Drivers manager should not only download restricted drivers, but it should solve all hardware-related issues where possible. I mean, it should recognize your hardware and download all the drivers available in the repos for you - when the drivers needed aren't on the install CD.
Developer comments
Hi,
There is work under way to enhance the driver manager (called "jockey") to handle more drivers, e.g. printer drivers. Much of this should be seen in the next release.

Better functioning of /home on network share
|

A lot of companies have there /home directories on a shared disk. So users can login on any workstation and still have their same desktop and settings.
However if there is a power cut (which happens a lot in second and third world countries), or the workstation crashes, the share has to be unmounted and mounted again. The average user has no clue what is going on, and cannot correct the problem. Only the administrator can do this. Why not unmount and mount shared filesystems (or at least a shared /home) on startup automatically in this case? Or an option to mount/unmount /home on the login screen?
Another problem is a network error. When the hub/router/switch fails for a second, or the network cable is temporarily disconnected, the workstation freezes for several minutes! Only the mouse moves, but no applications can be used.

It couldn't be worse! We cannot kill this process because cannot open terminal or system monitor.
This situation is very irritating.

Create a series of online services. Perhaps under a domain such as ubuntu.net or linux.net.
When people install Ubuntu, their e-mail client such as Evolution, Thunderbird, KMail and IM clients such Pidgin comes with presets.
So they can login to MSN from Pidgin via address like user@ubuntu.net.
They can also use it to login on Jabber/XMPP.
It also works like an OpenID, so you can use it to login on Brainstorm, Launchpad, and perhaps some bugzillas and perhaps SourceForge.net and Freshmeat.net.
Basically setup an Jabber/XMPP gateway, a e-mail server, and an OpenID provider, so that every Ubuntu/Linux can get a user@ubuntu.net address that he can use to access mail, login to websites and chat on MSN and Jabber/XMPP.

Provide an easy way to make an incremental Backup - like Apple's Time Machine

The idea here is to make an app that could use a second HDD (external, internal, etc) to automatically setup backup routines. It should be incremental, so that user could revert back to any state. And it should provide means for sepcifying, what files, folders or file types should be backuped - or may be, system on the whole, with its settings and so on. And all graphical, naturally.

With Gnome Commander you can't go into archives by pressing [ENTER], like in Midnight Commander.
This is a big problem for those who are coming from Windows and Total Commander too.

at System > Preferences > Power Management
on tabs "On AC Power" and "On Battery Power"
add on option to "Run Application" when laptop lid is closed (and when it's opened).
For example, I'd like to send a STOP signal to Firefox when the laptop lid is closed, to reduce power use, then send a CONT signal when the lid is opened, all while keeping SSH and chat sessions alive and active.

Improve automatic connection in Ubuntu
|
|
Written by orkerone the 3 Jul 08 at 09:43. Category: Security.

There's a common problem for Ubuntu users who have enabled the automatic connection. When you login manually, your password get stored somewhere and you don't need to retype it each time you start an application who needs it. But when you autologin, some applications require typing your password again. That's stupid, cause if I set up automatic connection, it was to avoid those repetitive password entries.
So, I don't know how is managed the password in Ubuntu, but please change it so that an automatic login does the same as a manual one.
Example : I installed Ubuntu on my mother's computer (and fought to do so). As she hates password and doesn't have a brilliant memory, I set up automatic login (by the way, Microsoft Windows® doesn't ask any password), and create two shortcuts on her desktop, Evolution and Firefox. She launches Evolution, and a silly keyring manager appears over her screen.
I've read forum to fix this, but the solution is removing the "login" entry in the Keyring manager, which, first, isn't very secure, but second, is too hard to change (as a newbie).
Notice there are other cases you get prompted for password in you set up automatic connection : Gnome-Do for me =/.

Ubuntu's site should contain news on success Open Source (not only Ubuntu) makes. Why not tell people that ODF is to be officially supported by MS Office 2007 later? Why not tell people that Mozilla Firefox has achieved the record of download count? Why not explain, why SIP is better than Skype? And so on. Ubuntu should promote things like ODF, Jabber, OGG and more - so that users could understand, how advanced these technologies are, and that Ubuntu will enable them to use them in a user-friendly way.

One applet for all downloads and other file operations

I suggest to develop standalone program, (or extension for Nautilus), which must use for all file transfer operations, such as:
File move/copy via Nautilus;
Firefox download;
Pidgin file transfer;
Update manager download;
File operations on ftp & other folders seen in "Places - Connect to server";
Archive manager operations.
The benefits must be:
Unified way to filetransfer, allowing pause, change queue order, re-get functions, etc;
Allowing non-interfere operations in parallel, rest in queue(s);
Generate list of task(s) in queue with save/load it;
Check for active transfers when user try to logout or power off;
Resume operations after reboot, if applicable.
