When I first got Ubuntu my laptop was constantly overheating. I almost gave up on linux, but in the last minute found out to do "echo powersave > /sys/devices/system/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor"
...in order to select the "powersave" governor. For a while I had to go through the hassle of doing this *every time* I booted Ubuntu, until I found the "Ubuntu Tweak" application, which enables you to add an option to the Preferences/Power management dialog to select a CPU governor (powersave/conservative/ondemand/etc.)

Could this option not be included by default?! It would also give people another easy option to make their batteries last when they need to!

Many post request new or improved features for programs that are available for use with Ubuntu. Ubuntu should organize programmers within the community who are willing to volunteer their time to help projects develop or improve features the Ubuntu community is asking for.

Think of it as our (modified) version of Google Summer of Code. As an example, say the community is asking for a web cam feature in Pidgin Ubuntu can ask for volunteers to help get the feature implemented then move on to the next third party feature request or bug fix.

Basically its Ubuntu saying to the community “hey, Ubuntu would benefit if this third party program had this bug fixed or new feature added. Please help by donating your programming skills or a few bucks”

A community mentoring program would also be great that created more programmers to assist in the future.

When Hardy Heron was released, the Ubuntu servers became overloaded with thousands of people trying to download it. Downloading rates of repositories and updates were so slow that some people had to leave the computer on at night only to find connection errors the next morning.

However, if Canonical had promoted the BitTorrent downloads, this wouldn't have happened. Everyone would have got a copy of Ubuntu without slowing the repository servers and producing a Denial-of-Service effect.

Moreover, BitTorrent has many advantages over direct downloads. For instance, the more people downloading at the same time, the more sources and lesser the wait. In addition, it ensures file integrity because it uses hash functions, that is, files cannot be corrupted (modified). Not to mention that transfers can be resumed if the connection is broken.

Therefore, BitTorrent downloading should be included in the Get Ubuntu page ( http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download ) with a succinct but clear explanation on how to use them.

The fact that this idea hasn't been implemented --despite all the votes in favour-- clearly shows a neglect and reluctance from Canonical decision-makers to do what is best for the community. The worst thing is that they aren't giving an explanation. I hope good ideas in this site don't come to die here in a puzzle of bureaucracy :(

The reason Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution is because developers listen to people. Let's keep that "humanity towards others" alive.

The restricted driver manager is a quite good utility, especially for new users. But often the automatic driver installation process gets useless if the used video card is not supported by the old driver in the ubuntu repository. The User has to download the new driver from the vendor's website and install it manually. This causes several problems, most irritating might be the required reinstall on kernel updates, not to speak of the lack of comfort for the average user.
And it's not only the support of new hardware, also new features are introduced with newer driver versions (e.g. AIGLX in the fglrx one).
So I think, these drivers should be updated by the update manager, too.

Include Compiz Fusion Manager by default

Provide this warning with possibility to solve the problem.

Given the success (as far as I know) of your Dell partnership, please do everything possible to seek alliances with other vendors, as it will reinforce the idea that Ubuntu is a viable alternative to other operating systems and will provide better hardware support for current Ubuntu users.

Dell is offering new models based on Ubuntu (recently the XPS M1330 in a few countries), proof that the business model makes sense.

For the 7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon" release we had a 'countdown'.

Users could link to an image/script that would countdown for every day that pass. Like "Ubuntu 7.10 - 93 days left".

And users could post it on their blogs, forums, websites, etc and it would generate a buzz and hype around the upcoming Ubuntu release and get people excited.

It was great. I propose we do the countdown again, now this time for the 8.04 "Hardy Heron" release.

I guess everybody has experienced the rather long boot up times in Ubuntu (particularly with laptops). I know they are already working on it, but the change from feisty to gutsy was a pain in the ass in terms of boot up speed.
A default WinXP installation beats Ubuntu's boot up time by far!! That shouldn't be allowed fellas!!

I therefore propose to the development team (both Ubuntu and by extension Gnome)to work on the improvement of boot up times in Ubuntu systems.

First of all: What is the difference between Preferences and Administration? For example: why do I see 'Encryption and Keyrings' in Preferences and 'Keyring Manager' in Administration? What is the difference between 'Default Printer' and 'Printing'? Why do I have to disable the Tracker under Sessions and not under Search and Indexing? And why are these menu's so large? I have 24 items in Preferences (they don't even fit on my screen!) and 18 items in Administration. To put all this stuff in a popup menu is bad interface design imho. Besides, the number of option should be much smaller. A few suggestions:

- Merge 'Screensaver', 'Screen Resolution' and 'Screens and Graphics'.
- Merge 'Network', 'Network Proxy' and 'Network Tools'.
- Merge 'Update Manager, Synaptic Package Manager, Software Sources'.
- Merge 'Encryption and Keyrings', 'Authorizations', 'Keyring Manager'.


Below are all settings I can visit via the System menu. This is just way too much.

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

Ubuntu's bootloader is a stark black and white screen, filled with confusing options. It gives newbies a moment of indecision, as they try to figure out if they are supposed to choose something, and wonder why there are three or four Ubuntus listed. Then the timer finishes counting down (starting from 10), and the newb begins to feel like he's getting in over his head as his PC boots into Ubuntu.

Too much information up front, stark text-only display, painfully long countdown timer. What would be the alternative? Well, when a Fedora PC is booted up, the first thing the user sees is a graphical splash screen, and "Booting into Fedora (kernel version) in 4 seconds ... " The user can press a key to interrupt and select from kernel versions or alternative operating systems, or just let it boot into Fedora.

Can't we create our own attractive bootloader? Or, failing that, copy-and-paste Fedora's?

Replace initscripts with upstart events. Our boot sequence is currently slow, full of race conditions and poor interactions, especially with competition between the series of tasks run by sysv-rc, udev and sometimes just with the kernel. We developed upstart so that we could have a truly event driven boot sequence that would be fast, reliable and flexible; we should take advantage of it.

Ubuntu needs to go green. Powertop, Lesswatts and other tools have finally hit the Linux scene to pave the way for better power management. It needs to be said, "if you want your battery to last longest, or have your energy bill be the lowest, you better use Ubuntu Linux."

Suspend and hibernate still seems to be a big issue based on forum posts. Really focus on fixing it, even with proprietary drivers.

The latest firefox 3 beta 4 just came out and includes a HUGE amount of fixes. Should be in the Ubuntu repositories.

I'd like to see the Ubuntu devs take on a micro sized Ubuntu version. With each new release, Ubuntu is getting fatter and fatter, needing more and more ram to install, or to run the LiveCD. I think some practice trying to ram an entire OS into an ISO that is less than 100MB might be good for them. Maybe reverse this bloat trend they've got going.

And yes, I'm aware of Xubuntu. And I hate it.

Recently on the ubuntu forums (and elsewhere) people have been posting bad commands to maliciously damage peoples systems. There should be a warning in the terminal (which could be swiched off in the terminal settings) when these commands are enterd before the command is executed. e.g.

I really believe this should be implemented as this is obviously a security flaw. Most viruses in windows require user execution to infect the system which makes this security flaw not much different.

We all love Ubuntu, but most of us can not easily participate or just lack the time. So to give Canonical extra speed, I would love to invest 1 to 10 USD a month. With the power of millions of investing users, the money invested could give a push that we can not have today. What about adding 500 chinese or indian low cost developers to the mission? Ill pay. Especially if I could get some return on investment. And, switching users just got a new dimension - then it´s called sales - building up our collective product.
I don´t know if it has to be stocks in Cannonical. There are quite smart people out there that could find other ways I am sure.
