make F-Spot photo manager a Picasa/iPhoto contender
Written by gabtrat the 5 Aug 08 at 21:25. Category: Graphics. Related to: F-Spot Photo Manager. New
I don't think I'm alone in that one of the first things I do on a fresh install of Ubuntu is remove F-spot & install Picasa. I don't what too, but I find that there is so much more that I can do with Picasa. I would love for F-spot to become the photo collection application of choice.

Here's a few things I would like to see:

*configure folders to watch for new pictures
*Organize pics in folders & tags
*easy UI integration to send to photo sharing websites, order prints, or email pictures
*automatic cleanup & sorting of photo collection
*tons of easy to use picture tweaks & photo effects
*easy editing of pics in the Gimp
*support for video

F-Spot import/file organization should be configurable.
Written by lutimdale the 25 Jul 08 at 11:26. Category: Graphics. Related to: F-Spot Photo Manager. New
Currently, pictures are organized like this:
Pictures/2008/07/01
Pictures/2008/07/05

Everyone organizes their large photo collections by full date because
1) this is how the pictures are taken (in events that typicaly fall on one date)
2) this is how typically other photo management programs group them (see Vista Photo Gallery, Picasa, etc.)
3) you need to be able to get at the folders from outside of the application. This is critical for backup/recovery, passing to friends, etc.
4) Having the folder marked as day only makes it not practical to add a description to the folder name

What I'm talking about is that on import, f-spot should by default create folders such
Pictures/2008-07-01
Pictures/2008-07-05
This is the best starting point, since 90% of the time, each album is separated by day. The date should be pulled in from exif data. I actually organize my albums by year, then date + description. For example,
Pictures/2008/2008-07-01 Birthday Party
Pictures/2008/2008-07-05 Camping
This should be configurable as everyone has their own preferences. Yes, even this format should be supported
Pictures/2008/07/01
Pictures/2008/07/05
but it should not be the default.

You should be able to edit the folder name from within F-Spot as well as from the file manager. F-Spot should be able to recognize the change and not loose any categorization for the affected photos.

Remove 'Install/remove software' from the menu;use synaptic as only standard
Written by tienm the 7 Aug 08 at 20:26. Category: System. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
The standard menu shows the option to add/remove software. This Gnome tool is 'quite' similar to synaptics. It confuses endusers which program to use for adding/removing software.

Make gnome-panel more beautiful
Written by gmeier the 5 May 08 at 16:58. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Gnome-panel drops behind other desktops in the look and feel of the panel.

There are loads of Ideas e.g. on gnome-look.org about improving the panel and especially the menu. It looks like a lot of people don't like the situation right now.

It would be nice to have some discussion, how gnome-panel could be improved.

Please notice, this is not about changing the panel into a dock, but about extending its funktionallity and look and feel while keeping what we already have, and works well.

Better centralized sound management

Better Intel HDA control management, old alsa is mixing and confusing every user, show lot of confusing stuff like mixer and extra alternatives(maybe) oss, sigmatel, intel hda, alsa but still i dont know which will yield best results

Needs Better GUI,less confusion, complicated way to handle, dont show too many devices show all devices can be configured in single window including equalizer, synthesizer, wave to configure.when i plugged in new motherboard i noticed that iam not getting the best possible output with Alsa in Hardy, not just auto detection should be there but it should give maximum sound output, avoiding noise it is feature of intel HDA to avoid noise
Intel HD Audio hardware is capable of delivering the support and sound quality for up to eight channels at 192 kHz/32-bit quality, while the AC‘97 specification can only support six channels at 48 kHz/20-bit. In addition, Intel HD Audio is architected to prevent the occasional glitches or pops that other audio solutions can have by providing dedicated system bandwidth for critical audio functions.

Include GUFW as a GUI firewall frontend.
Written by rsingh the 1 Jul 08 at 11:06. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
One of the things included in Hardy was ufw (Uncomplicated firewall wall), but everything has to be done via CLI. There is a very nice GUI frontend being developed for it and it would be nice if it is bundled as a default package.

Make gnome-system-monitor more accessible via CTRL-ALT-DELETE
Written by strattonbrazil the 14 Jul 08 at 22:28. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
gnome-system-monitor provides a cleaner interface than Windows "Task Manager", and provides many useful features including list of processes running, memory and network usage, etc.

This functionality should be more accessible by key binding it by default to CTRL-ALT-DELETE as Windows does--as this is more familiar to users coming from Windows. The current key binding for CTRL-ALT-DELETE brings up the shutdown/logout options, which is already accessible as a desktop button, which is redundant for a relatively less used function.

gnome-system-monitor is an idle interface for monitoring the system and killing processes without using the terminal and provides an interface for doing this that most are already familiar with. Changing it's key binding would make it's functionality much more accessible.

Plugging in a USB audio device should automatically switch audio output to it
Written by cr4a the 26 Jul 08 at 13:21. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Now, when you plug in a USB audio device, you must manually go into System>Preferences and change the source. This should be done automatically, under the assumption that if the user is actively connecting a device, he or she probably wants to use it.

This should work both for ALSA and OSS.

report ANY hardware that wont work to a central database for driver supply
Written by stinger30au the 26 Jul 08 at 09:16. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
it would be neat if no matter what piece of hardware we plugged in to our ubuntu pc, if the os does not recognise it, it will send some kind of report about the hardware to a central data base.

the user is also allowed to input data to be sent like make, model, etc as well as the os identify the unit as well.

Create OSX binary compat layer, ship with Ubuntu
Written by ethana2 the 26 Jul 08 at 18:19. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Won't implement
This idea is forfeited. I trust we all learned as much as I did. Have a good day.

"Theoretically, this should be less hit and miss than WINE, because osx is actually a decent, consistent operating system. [[I learned this was not true]] It may, however, require reimplementing quite a lot of code-- quartz, cocoa, carbon, mach, IOKit, what have you. [[dang straight it's a lot of code]]

Right now it's just looking like OSX may get to windows before we do, [[time to start trying harder as an evangelist]] and if it comes down to two awesome desktops and one has native apps and one doesn't, things could get ugly. As far as I'm concerned, this is the reason for GNUstep's existence. [[probably blasphemy there]]

At least get us a feasability report on this. [[Done.]]"

Add "Search this folder" to the right-click context menu of folders
Written by Zero3 the 23 May 08 at 13:27. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
One of the features I really miss in the file browsing interface is the ability to right-click any folder and select something like "Search this folder".

Right now, you apparently have to either:

1) Copy the path, launch the search tool, click "other location" in the "search in" drop-down box, click the "toggle text path" button, paste the path, click open

OR

2) Launch the search tool, click "other location" in the "search in" drop-down box, browse for the folder, click open

Surely there must be other people than me who would like this kind of shortcut?

Add all available printerdrivers by default
Written by tienm the 23 May 08 at 18:09. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Not all printerdrivers are available in the default setup, like a lot of the Brother printerdrivers. They are available through synaptic. Adding them to the default Ubuntu setup it will become more easy using Ubuntu for those not having to search for their drivers.

The package descriptions in Synaptic often contain a link to the homepage of the package. It would be nice if they worked as hyperlinks.

(copy/paste is hard and double clicking selects the entire row instead of the word!)

Developer comments
This is already implemented in Hardy Heron!
Not all packages have their homepage yet, but those who have is hyperlinked.

The Weather Repot panel should provide a 5-day forecast
Written by wladston the 23 May 08 at 02:04. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Currently,. it only shows the actual weather status. It would be a great addition, I wouldn't have to go to a website to check the weather anymore.

This can be done like that - when the user clicks the panel icon, a list shows under it with the forecast for the next 5 days.

Improve automatic mounting
Written by limcore the 19 May 08 at 14:37. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
(This is related a bit
to http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/8789/)

KDE - config - Discs & file systems application needs option to allow auto mounting when device becomes available (i.e. USB key).

Currently one can define a partition (i.e. by UUID or label), and a mount point with options, but I dont see there option to have it auto mounted.

Imho, for partition there should be option:
(*) automatically mount this device when ever it is available
[x] also check on bootup
( ) ask do we want to mount it, as soon as it is available
[x] also on bootup
[ ] if availabe on bootup, then mount without asking
( ) do nothing, but if users mounts it using Enable command here, then use this mountpoint.

Improve the Disk Mounter Applet
Written by jorsol the 19 May 08 at 03:26. Category: Accessibility. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The actual disk mounter applet lacks for certain features that make more configurable and easy to use it.

It's more easy and fast to go directly to the icon in the gnome-panel and remove a device, than to the desktop and "unmount" the device. But the actual applet works creating an icon for each device mounted in an horizontal way, which is unpractical.

This are my suggestions to improve the applet:

It should be configurable (Preference page):
* It should have a preference page showing the following check boxs: []USB Flash, []Memory Cards, []Hard Drives, [] CD/DVD ROM... these are the device to be show by the applet.
* Also in the preference must have an option to show if the user like the horizontal way (actual behavior) or a vertical way (Menu style).

The Menu style must be something like this:
* The menu style should be only ONE icon. (the main app)
* The main app expand a Menu with all devices mounted (following the user preference), and then it expand a submenu with the actual open and remove (unmount) actions.

General behavior:
* The applet should show the Label of the device mounted NOT the fabricant of the device (ex. Kingston DataTraveler 2.0), if there is no label then it should use the fabricant model.
* If I check USB and CD the applet will show only those I check.
* The icons of the devices should correspond to the device mounted. (USB Logo, CD icon, hard drive icon, memory card icon).

Finally, probably should be enabled by default in all new installations (Intrepid Ibex?) with only the options USB MemCards selected and the menu (vertical) style.

That is pretty much what it should be done to de disk mounter applet... and I just noted that this applet is developed by Canonical, then there is no problem for doing that,
