software updates in update manager must be organized in a tree

in a tree becouse we'll know what to update:
1. for example:
>compiz
---compiz-core
---compiz-plugin
---compiz-gnome
>evolution
---evolution-data-center
---evolution-webcal
---evolution-plugin
>firefox
---firefox-3.0
---firefox-3.0-gnome-support
>security updates
---kernel
2. update manager should ask to confirm changes that also affect other programs
3. confirm recommended packages as dependencies like in synaptic package manager.
Update manager should be more intelligent in general!

Synaptic: Auto-discovery of PPAs with latest releases for package.

There should be an option in Synaptic which searches if there is a PPA -- which is NOT ENABLED in your current software sources list -- but contains a more recent version of the package you are looking to install.
It's bad when you don't know which repositories you need to add to your software sources in order to install the latest version of a package.
Worse still is when you *thought* you were installing the latest version of a program - and sit through the whole install process - only to find out that you didn't.
We should solve this problem.
When you do a search in synaptic, it should (optionally) discover if there is a PPA which contains a more recent version of the package, and then offer - with 1-click - to add the repository and mark the packages for installation.
In addition, when synaptic queries the PPA's, the query should be handled by a central PPA dispatch that knows which PPA is designated to handle requests for that package, and pass the request on to that PPA. That way, the err, 'unoffically official' PPA that is meant to handle installs for that package will be the one that responds.

Make the ability to select/copy text from dialogs consistent across all apps.

In many programs dialogs this _is_ available but not all.
Some apps use (or seem to use) normal system dialogs (I'm thinking Eclipse in particular here) to show errors and then won't allow you to copy the text.
This means if I want to google for an error message, file a bug report or ask a question concerning this error in a forum I have to manually retype it *yawn*.
There's no reason I can see for not being able to highlight and copy text from _any_ dialog. And, much as it pains me to point this out, you generally CAN do this in windows :-/
It may be the case that the application devs never thought to include the switch for this when designing their interfaces and maybe one might file lots of seperate bugs for each app but... seeing as they're using system dialogs surely it wouldn't be hard (or AFAICS hazardous) to globally override this and make all dialog text copyable?

Weather details for Hardy "Clock" Applet

In the "Clock" toolbar applet that is shipped with Hardy, users can now see weather information for their location. Cool feature, but lacking in actual data. In the "Weather Report" that was previously available (and still is), you could click and see Temperature, Dew point, humidity, etc, and even look at a text format to get precipitation and high/low temperatures for the week. None of this is available in the "Clock" applet.
If this is meant to essentially *replace* the "Weather Report" applet, or even consolidate the two applets into one, please don't remove useful functionality. I'd like to start using the Locations feature from the Clock applet, but at this point, I miss having all of the other data.

Pre-defined configuration for laptops

Almost everyone who owns a laptop knows which manufacturer and model is. If people realize that hardware was not recognized by ubuntu, they search in forums and look what they have to do, step by step, to make things run. Generally, what you find in forums works very well... Can't you automatize this?
It could be great if there is a program where you choose your manufacturer and model, and automatically do the perfect configuration of your laptop, and make hardware run if it isn't. This program just configure all stuff like xorg.conf, download missing drivers or something like that.
This option is perfect for people who don't like to change configuration files or don't know how to.

Add Flock Web Browser to Universe or Multiverse

The flock web browser (www.flock.com) is a great example of social networking tied into the mozilla backend. photobucket and flickr integration, wordpress blogging, gmail, online bookmark sites, facebook, youtube, and twitter. All in one tightly integrated package.
Having this browser as a standard option in the repos will, in my opinion give a better desktop experience to those interested in that sort of thing.
With the success of digg, facebook, and other social sites, making it easier to use a package like this (rather than going to a place like getdeb) and deploy it will only make our repos better and our platform more fun for new users.

Integrate (g)vim with Nautilus GVFS and Keyring

It's very convenient to mount an FTP or SSH server via Nautilus for quick updates to a website. However, I'm forced to use GEdit to edit text files mounted through Nautilus. GEdit is ok, but vim is such a beautiful editor for the power user/programmer.
Especially with the new GVFS, please work on support for GVim to access the keychain and be useable via right-click on any Nautilus-mounted filesystem.
