Ideas about bad sound quality: OSS 4 is open-sourced now. Can we use it?
Written by tesla the 17 Mar 08 at 11:26. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Is ALSA enough for sound quality, or better than Windows' sound?

I heard that OSSv4.0 released with source codes in 2007.
* http://www.opensound.com/press/2007/oss-gpl-cddl.txt
* http://www.opensound.com/

I read a post about OSS and want to share.
* http://insanecoding.blogspot.com/2007/05/sorry-state-of-sound-in-linux.html

If you read the post in the address i gave, the writer says that OSS was good enough in architect and was reliable, there was no need to write a new code. Also he says its easier to develop software and its crossplatform (OSS), and ALSA has lots of functions which are not used and slow. I read it and want to hear about these arguments. The post sounds me true but i wonder if OSS can be integrated in Ubuntu without any license problem. Is there any way to be default?

Maybe some parts of OSS can be taken to ALSA, so we get more hardware support? Or architect of ALSA may be changed like OSS and can be cross-platform? Or OSS can be used by default.

Many friends don't use Ubuntu because they say Ubuntu's sound is very bad. I'm an Ubuntu and open source fan, and just want to hear replies about sound quality improvement news and ideas*. I don't know much about OSS, I just want to learn.

* For example maybe an integrated enhancer in Ubuntu would be perfect. (Sorry for bad English.)
* An equalizer can be added to Ubuntu's volume manager maybe?

I don't really know if this has already been implemented on Ubuntu, but applying Fedora ideas to boost X startup would be appreciated.

Ubuntu receives these fixes as they are applied upstream. If for some reason you see a patch upstream that hasn't been applied feel free to file a bug on Launchpad.

ADD BITTORRENT OPTION ON THE MAIN DOWNLOAD PAGE!

The Novell guys took the lead already: http://software.opensuse.org/

When Hardy Heron was released, the Ubuntu servers became overloaded with thousands of people trying to download it. Downloading rates of repositories and updates were so slow that some people had to leave the computer on at night only to find connection errors the next morning.

However, if Canonical had promoted the BitTorrent downloads, this wouldn't have happened. Everyone would have got a copy of Ubuntu without slowing the repository servers and producing a Denial-of-Service effect.

Moreover, BitTorrent has many advantages over direct downloads. For instance, the more people downloading at the same time, the more sources and lesser the wait. In addition, it ensures file integrity because it uses hash functions, that is, files cannot be corrupted (modified). Not to mention that transfers can be resumed if the connection is broken.

Therefore, BitTorrent downloading should be included in the Get Ubuntu page ( http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download ) with a succinct but clear explanation on how to use them.

The fact that this idea hasn't been implemented --despite all the votes in favour-- clearly shows a neglect and reluctance from Canonical decision-makers to do what is best for the community. The worst thing is that they aren't giving an explanation. I hope good ideas in this site don't come to die here in a puzzle of bureaucracy :(

The reason Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution is because developers listen to people. Let's keep that "humanity towards others" alive.

We do actually have a BitTorrent tracker and support BitTorrent downloads; you can see the .torrent files on releases.ubuntu.com, and every release features people eager to provide seeding.

I think the reason the torrents aren't prominent on getubuntu/download is that there are a lot of problems with the server-side tracker software; particularly around release time, it has to be restarted manually rather a lot as new files are made available, taking ages to reinitialise each time, and this makes our sysadmins unhappy. Our webmaster also wants the download page to be as simple as possible, and each option does add a level of complexity to the process.

That said, BitTorrent certainly can help to scale back server load (although so can using mirrors other than Canonical's - there's a reason there's a period before release when the images are available on our servers but we ask people to restrain themselves from posting links to them, and that's to give mirrors a chance to fetch the images first).

On 3 June, our webmaster added a note to the bottom of http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download on how to retrieve images by BitTorrent, which I believe was in response to this item. This ultimately takes you through to the releases.ubuntu.com page from which you can get the .torrent files.

Bearing in mind some of the constraints involved that lead to something of a compromise, I'm interested in whether that resolves this item.

Preload next photo in F-SPOT
Written by svergeylen the 18 May 08 at 13:24. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Hi,

I would like to precharge the next and previous photo in F-SPOT to avoid the blurred image.

At this moment, when you browse your photos woth the "next" button, it takes nearly one second to load completely the image.

It will be a really improve if F-SPOT could pre-load 1 (or more) images to avoid this delay.

Thanks

Add extra GIMP plugins pack to the repository
Written by mihai007 the 24 Apr 08 at 10:03. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. Not an idea
I just found some very very useful plugins for gimp at http://registry.gimp.org
It would be nice to have an entry in synaptic to install extra plugins for GIMP from there and not only!
This way we could benefit from all new features being developed by the community.

If they also have some ubuntu branding these are really nice gifts and give aways. Just sell a 2GB or 4GB memory stick for a competitive price. Also might be nice to sell these at exhibitions

Don't stop bug fixing!
Written by caligarn the 27 Apr 08 at 14:35. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. Already implemented
Just because Ubuntu is now released does not mean that bugs shouldn't be uploaded into the Update Manager as rigorously as they were during the month before April 24th! Hardy is still buggy, so I think that the entire 6 months between Hardy and Ibex should continue that trend of HARDINESS. It should fit its definition! Keep getting stronger and stronger.

I've got "ubuntu" and "hardy heron" on google-alerts, so I can read all the latest blog posts and news articles that are coming up lately. There's a lot of critisms. I recommend we address those criticisms thoroughly and completely in the next 6 months, and I mean, address them tirelessly and rigorously.

There needs to be a way in which we can monitor all the complaints, criticisms, etc. in one place so that they're in a database, easily accessible. Meaning, can we consolidate the critiques that show up in the blogosphere, ubuntuforums, brainstorm and launchpad? Maybe something similar to ubuntustats.com.

What do ya'll think?

Get Google (or somebody) to Help Host Ubuntu When New Releases Come Out
Written by linbai the 25 Apr 08 at 23:15. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This idea is actually from Jason Perlow's ZDNET blog today (http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=8618). Jason writes, "With the growing popularity of the Ubuntu distribution, Canonical needs to get the repository infrastructure built, or we’re all going to be walking out. They need to partner with someone like Akamai where the repos can be cached and large amounts of users can get to packages reliably." He goes on, "It just so happens that Akami has a large hosting partner already, and that partner is Microsoft. Microsoft could score huge points and extend a major olive branch by allowing Ubuntu to use its Akamai infrastructure that it uses for Service Pack and patching delivery and MSDN downloads to distribute Ubuntu and serve repository packages. After all, they are serious about making inroads in interoperability and being nice, right? Of course if Microsoft wants to decline the offer, I am sure Google or another large vendor would be happy to step in."

I obviously don't expect MS to help, but Google might. Food for thought anyway ;)

Enable GNOME to make copies of wallpaper files
Written by SchwarzeKrause the 24 Apr 08 at 21:46. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Today, I have tested one moment. Looks like when I choose a custom wallpaper from a file (downloaded from a site, etc.), GNOME doesn't store a copy anywhere. So, when I move or delete the original file, my desktop wallpaper gets lost. A small and obvious thing, but it isn't implemented

Provide Creative X-Fi driver in restricted driver repository

Replace applications' volume sliders with PulseAudio
Written by Warbo the 25 Apr 08 at 00:20. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Since Ubuntu is now using PulseAudio, which gives volume control on an application by application basis, there is no need for multimedia programs to use their own volume control.

For instance, if I change the volume slider in Totem this shouldn't change an internal Totem volume, it should change the PulseAudio volume for Totem. The same with Rhythmbox, Amarok, etc.

Having multiple volume controls for the same thing can be really annoying, for example wanting to unmute some music and having to check the Rhythmbox volume, PulseAudio's volume for Rhythmbox, the master volume and physical speaker volume. To me the speaker and master volumes have an obvious reason to exist, but there seems to be no difference between the internal and PulseAudio volume control for Rhythmbox, hence they should be merged.

BTW I proposed this to a PulseAudio developer who said that this is one of the main reasons for having PulseAudio.

We currently have full support for ACPI 1.0 and some support for ACPI 2.0.

We should get full support for ACPI 2.0 and also try to get full support for ACPI 3.0b.

ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) is an open industry standard that defines common interfaces for hardware recognition, motherboard and device configuration and power management.

Hello,

I propose to integrate NM 0.7 in Hardy Heron because:

- the 0.6 version give many problems
- the 0.7 version is in Fedora 9 and others distributions
- the 0.7 version is more more more great :p
- it is normal to work on the 0.6 version for Hardy?

so, please to vote for my idea :p

bye,
fred

Ask Nvidia (and ati) to release drivers in ubuntu .deb format
Written by pepperpupper the 23 Apr 08 at 14:10. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I don't know how doable this is but it would be useful if we could make Nvidia (and ATI) to release their drivers in .deb prepared especially for Ubuntu. This would easy the installation a whole lot for many poeple as they could get the latest drivers straight from the Nvidia download page. One of the reasons for why I have ended up with windows again is problems with nvidia drivers installation.

There is a wide community of online artists capable of creating brilliant, unique artwork.

heading: Get your artwork on 10 million desktops

Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux distribution, needs a new theme. The winner will appear in the default desktop of Ubuntu 8.10.

We're looking for original wallpapers, that match Ubuntu's color palette. You entry should also include a suggested combination of application, icon, and window themes. These can be existing themes, or your own original works - you only need to submit a wallpaper to win.

Work must be CC licensed, and be openable in either Inkscape or Gimp (rest of criteria continues)

Submit your works to DeviantArt and include the words [Ubuntu810].

Good luck!

Developer comments
At this point in time it is unclear as to whether we can realize something like this. In any case we cannot promise to include anything as default without having already seen it. This might be a good way to find alternative wallpapers to also include on the CD and/or universe as an extra package.

Be able to drag images from firefox into applications
Written by rouge568 the 24 Apr 08 at 02:56. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would like to be able to see a nice image on the internet and drag it into an application without having to copy-paste or save it first. I cannot do this on Open Office, Picasa, Mnemosyne, or Inkscape (linked images do not work on GIMP). The little polishes like this are what make Ubuntu such a good distro, and we need to fix them up.
