Microsoft Office 2007 Style in OpenOffice.org
Written by emadwilliam the 29 Sep 08 at 18:16. Category: Office. Related to: OpenOffice.org Word Processor. New
I always reboot my computer and enter Windows and use their "GREAT" Office 2007 Tools (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc..) when I want to do some Office-related work.

You can clearly see that it's very easier and much better with the "buttons tabs" at the top instead of the classic menus used by OpenOffice.org.

I can easily finish my work this way.
I suggest that the community start giving OpenOffice.org a nicer look and an easier way of finding what I want to do in my document, following Micorosft Office steps...

type in file name to insert current date
Written by mkash the 29 Sep 08 at 08:59. Category: Usability. Related to: Nautilus. New
I need to create dated folders and timed files regularly.

dated folder means a folder with name 29.09.08 and timed files means files with names like 3.24pm.txt etc

It would be cool to employ some type of command substitution while renaming files like if I type <date> it would insert date or <now> for time. Much like spreadsheet software do.

Maybe a plugin for nautilus or something else. What do you think?

Make Exaile default music player for Ubuntu (instead of rhytmbox)
Written by gatsby the 29 Feb 08 at 14:27. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Exaile is a music player aiming to be similar to KDE's Amarok, but for GTK+ and written in Python. It incorporates many of the cool things from Amarok (and other media players) like automatic fetching of album art, handling of large libraries, lyrics fetching, artist/album information via Wikipedia, Last.fm submission support, and optional iPod support via a plugin.
In addition, Exaile also includes a built-in SHOUTcast directory browser, tabbed playlists (so you can have more than one playlist open at a time), blacklisting of tracks (so they don't get scanned into your library), downloading of guitar tablature from fretplay.com, and submitting played tracks on your iPod to Last.fm.

Change the name of the site Ubuntu Brainstorm is on
Written by Primož Papič the 9 Jun 08 at 11:00. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Weird title, I know...
The title of the site where Ubuntu Brainstorm is:
Ubuntu Questions and Answers.
This is very misleading and it's semi responsible for this kind of posts: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/9683/

Even though on Ubuntu site the Brainstorm site is represented right; and same goes for Google.
But this is only explanation why Brainstorm gets that much of questions, bug reports and similar...

Just rename it completely in Ubuntu Brainstorm, No Ubuntu QA.

make the updates smaller and more inteligent
Written by slsolaris the 16 Jul 08 at 21:28. Category: System. Related to: ubuntu.com. New
what i really want to say is that we should have this option when updating:

-replace old version, or update keeping old version (so when we want to go back to the old version we can do it!

Provide a way for offline Package installation
Written by davidd the 17 Jul 08 at 09:28. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Package applications with their dependencies and make them available for offline installation.

I would like to see a website where you download apps (like getdeb) _with_ their dependecies. But for me installing files offline means downloading them with the dependencies via apt. Then get them out of the apt dir and over to an usb stick. On the other machine get them into the apt dir and install the app. There may be ways of avoiding some steps but no simple way to get them without ubuntu. I would like to see a web interface which gets my files together (e.g for deluge) and puts it into a big deb.
I like apt-get and its wonderful for online installation but for offline installation you are left in the cold. Many users are still offline and linux (on cd) is purely for users with internet access. With dvds you have little chance to get what you need offline. Handling apps over on usb sticks or even shipping them with magazines is a pain.
I'm thinking about a website because it would be possible even without ubuntu on the downloading machine.
Linux is still the only os which lacks proper (easy and stupid) offline installation because of the dependecies. Linux is different i know. But this wouldn't be a problem. And again apt-get is good. I'm not flaming apt. No offense :) Just looking for a dummy way

edit: added more description

Add a 'Description' column to the GNOME System Monitor.

GNOME System Monitor lists processes, and the processes can sometimes have cryptic filenames which the user does not understand what the process is for. So I suggest to create an 'Description' column to explain the process.

The user sees "gdm", "atd", "cron", "trackerd", "nm-applet", "sh", and get confused because he don't know what it is.

He look in the Description column and sees that "gdm" is "GNOME Display Manager", "sh" is "shell", and "nm-applet" is "network-management applet", etc.

Because when a user checks the running processes and sees "gvfsd" he have no idea what it is, with this Description column, he can easily see that it is the "GNOME virtual file system daemon".

In GNOME System Monitor, it has a column called "Nice".
* http://www.watchingthenet.com/wp-content/uploads/image/ubuntusysmonitor4.png

"Nice" comes from command 'nice';
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nice_(Unix)

However, the term "Nice" doesn't tell a user who don't know it, anything. The correct term to use would be "Priority" as that is what it indicates.

Add window shadows
Written by Eldmannen the 15 May 08 at 23:07. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
You can have window shadows with Compiz.
But not everyone can run Compiz.

Add window shadows so it works without Compiz.
Enlightenment (window manager) has this.
Other operating systems have shadows without hardware-accelerated desktop too.

choose the new theme of Ubuntu by Brainstorm.
Written by nq6 the 2 Jul 08 at 16:35. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New

The Ubutnu is a popular distribution, and the choice of their standard theme should be made by all by voting. And not by a small group. The community can elect the theme through the Ubuntu Brainstorm.

For the choice of a new theme that is the satisfaction of the majority that idea is essential.

---------------------
Edited:
Initially thank you all. This idea may help it to developers in the choice, and can have an extra theme.

Can serve as a basis for changes in the theme chosen by the team of Ubuntu, even if the popular themes are not adopted.

This idea will help.

Brainstorm social network
Written by davim the 12 Jun 08 at 19:28. Category: Brainstorm. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be cool if brainstorm could be turned into a kind of social network, like in last.fm one could have a neighbourhood (based on similar promoted / demoted ideas) create user groups and have a list of friends...

This would make ideas that you agree with more visible to you....

what do you think?

Commonly Used Programs
Written by leonel95 the 13 Jun 08 at 00:12. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
A simple suggestion that perhaps after Gdm login.
regularly used programs or that the user chooses from a menu to be loaded into memory. That way Firefox for example doesnt have to load,, its way faster when you open firefox and another window is minimized in the back.. As far as memory is concerned. after loading those 'commonly used programs. they are stored in your RAM in a compressed state to conserve memory space. Just my 2 dimes on this i am an honest beginner with little to, not much understanding. Thanks deadowl.. for that comment. as far as no memory leaks.. if firefox for example can be loaded but without any extensions. just the core that is.

more appealing startup and shutdown splashscreens
Written by maltepalte the 4 Jun 08 at 01:03. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The Ubuntu startup and shutdown splashscreens with the Ubuntu logo and a progress bar underneath it really looks like something from the 90ies (Windows 95 anyone?)

I don't know if there are any hindrances to using images or animations of higher resolutions than what is currently used (for machines that supports it), but I really think Ubuntu can do better here.

This may be an unimportant improvement compared to many other ideas here, but it should be a very quick and easy fix, and it will really help when you try to convince regular folks to make the switch (a graphically stunning desktop is _so_ important when you show it to occasional users!).

PulseAudio should be installed on Ubuntu Server Edition as well
Written by fluo the 27 Mar 08 at 09:45. Category: Multimedia. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Pulseaudio is enabled by default on ubuntu hardy heron, it can fuse two audio cards, stream audio over (local) network etc.

Unfortunately, it's not installed by default on Ubuntu server editions. It would be great to have it implemented here as well so you could easily stream laptop sounds to your music server/high-end speakers for example.

Make x.org configuration modular
Written by dustyculler the 17 Mar 08 at 04:16. Category: Graphics. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Split out the x.org configuration files into categories such as

• xorg-screens.conf
• xorg-inputdevices.conf
• xorg-videocards.conf

When a video card manufacturer, gnome developer, etc. makes a tool to install and configure video drivers they should not have to worry about detecting screens, resolutions, refresh rates, input devices, etc.

I've had my dual head setup working well and these tools have switched my setup to single head, my mouse quit working, my default resolution and/or refresh rate(s) changed. This has resulted in a system that was not fully functional at times.

It would be much easier to developers to create tools to target one of these areas without having to do the others.
In other words, nVidia shouldn't be messing with my input devices, they should only be concerned with video cards, and reading the screens that are already setup to use for setting dual head, etc. up.

Remove the Remote Desktop 8 Character Password Restriction
Written by luke16 the 4 May 08 at 00:52. Category: Security. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Is there any particular reason that I am not allowed to make passwords longer than 8 characters in the Remote Desktop settings menu? It just seems like a really silly and pointless restriction to me that could potentially weaken the overall security of the system by having a weaker than necessary password, and it should be removed.
Linux is supposed to be all about good security.
