Extend ELF with metadata
Written by Eldmannen the 14 Aug 08 at 19:18. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I propose to extend ELF (Executable and Linking Format) with support for metadata.

Possible metadata included could be software version, developer and description, etc. Perhaps URL and license.

Example for the file 'gvfsd';
- Description: GNOME virtual file system daemon
- Developer: GNOME
- Version: 0.99.4
- License: GPL

This would provide the necessary back-end functionality to implement ideas such as idea 11205.

Usuability Rules

Fantastic article on consistent user interfaces. This really should be a blueprint on how to design the next release.

Merge and break the GNOME libs into basic sections
Written by qense the 14 Aug 08 at 08:30. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
It would make things a lot easier for programmers if GNOME would provide an interface for every core part of the system, e.g. libgnome-sound. This could be wrappers around the current libraries, maybe with a selector in between. This way there is a default interface to do things and this makes it easier for new people to learn and documentation would be smaller.

search better Only single search engine
Written by dragoninsane the 14 Aug 08 at 09:07. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Single search engine with advance features and enhancements.
i would like to see combined efforts of Tracker and Beagle. Although catfish is also doing great job. Keeping more than one search engine doesn’t make sense.
One Search engine doesn’t mean I am deprived of those features that are available in beagle and tracker. Beagle has better looking features and queries. Searching looks faster than tracker, while its good to have tracker but it simply doesn’t match the quality of Beagle. But I strongly suggest that replacing tracker will be good to all ubuntuers, beagle does everything right except one thing, it includes only path of the home to index on first install, It should not only detect file systems but also index them from first install. There are other search engines that I might not have heard of or it’s like strigi which I never used. Simply include one search engine and make life simple. Which one is better I leave to users.Kde too needs only one simple search engine. Google desktop too indexes all the data on hard disk without prompting to input path of hard disk drives; it just asks what kind of files to index.
Also search engine shouldn’t be dependent on indexing data as data gets edited every now and then files/folders are moved/edited/deleted so indexing a file which is no longer available simply is waste of time. Search engine should be able to do live search on all drives.
One of the biggest flaw with search engines in Linux I found was inability to do single search on multiple drives and search based on criteria like search files by type, date, size etc.
When I wanted to search for text/document files I need to put myself *.txt or *.doc in search filed and scan all drives on by one which isn’t desired.

Displaying a timezone's GMT in gnome clock preferences
Written by Predator106 the 14 Aug 08 at 17:34. Category: System. Related to: Gnome. New
Do the following

-Goto Clock Preferences
-Click Time Settings
-Click Time Zone

After doing that, you can select your region, but there is no mention of what GMT time each timezone is at. I would certainly like to have this feature, and do not want to have to look it up online everytime I want to calculate my time zone difference, or figure out what time zone someone or I am in(In GMT time).

Scenario:

User A lives in New York, USA.

User B lives in Germany(or some far away place).

User A has no connection to the internet at the moment, and wants to call his friend, User B. User A does not want to call at 1:00 in the morning, so he wants to quickly calculate the difference in time, using GMT-X:XX (ex. GMT-5:00). Used to being able to do this easily in Windows, he goes to the clock and then the timezone settings, only to find out it, silly enough, it isn't there. He then has to boot into Windows (bad) just to check the difference in time.

Add/Remove and Synaptic should be strongly 'displayed' to the new users
Written by zelrikriando the 14 Aug 08 at 01:47. Category: Marketing. Related to: Add/Remove program dialog. New
I have been noticing that new users try to install .exe files to their ubuntu without knowing about Add/Remove or Synaptic...

Is there a way to strongly recommend/point to/advertise at least the Add/Remove feature in ubuntu?? The windows users will think of Add/Remove as the same for windows and just google for their software (without specifying 'Linux' or 'ubuntu' is their search).

I suggest that one way to do it would be to display the feature in 'hard to miss' way at first start up (from preinstalled version or LiveCD install) with a short explanation about what this is about.

One more push for that would be to recognize the .exe files when the user tries to run them and display some error message with a recommendation : "Couldnt open this Microsoft format at the moment...Please use the Add/Remove feature to install new applications blablabla..."

I think that would be a great way to make the switch easy for users from the windows world.

A second nautilus hacker is needed
Written by pierre.slamich@gmail.com the 13 Aug 08 at 21:39. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Nautilus only has one dedicated hacker (Christian Neumair) although it's a crucial part of Gnome. Still studying, it's difficult for him to give as much attention as he would like to every help request, and new hackers.
More genreally, in the context of Gnome 3.0, Gnome needs at least another Nautilus hacker (a Gnome hacker who would specialize into Nautilus' internals)

Mount/unmount network shares automatically   forum
Written by Paqman the 14 Aug 08 at 17:50. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Network shares are becoming increasingly common for home users, and many laptop users routinely connect and disconnect to networks with shares.

Ubuntu should have an option to automatically mount designated shares when they are detected, and unmount them when they disappear. At present the system requires a sudo mount -a to go and check the /etc/fstab and mount any strays.

Users have already posted a script that does this in the forums.

The most stable possible version
Written by Geeky the 29 Jul 08 at 12:32. Category: Installation. Related to: Update manager. New
When the final release of Intrepid Ibex will be ready on October 30 th.No automatic message has to appear in Synaptic or the other one.
The news will be known by information on Internet, official announcement, etc....
The only way to upgrade will be to type in a terminal:
" Sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"
So,only most motivated people, Geeks ,...Will upgrade to Intrepid Ibex .They will report the main bugs via Launchpad.
And only when the bigs Bugs will be fixed, the automatic message will appear as before. The period(delay) will be from 2 weeks to one month.
The servers will be less saturated and Ubuntu 8.10 will win in stability.
The most famous example is Mozilla who has waited for firefox version 3 upgrade in version 3.1 to propose the automatic update of version 2 for the general public.
Sorry for my English !

direct URL support in file window
Written by cumulus007 the 29 Jul 08 at 20:05. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nautilus CD/DVD Creator. New
Sometimes, I want to use some content on the web quickly, without needing to download it. Changing your pifgin avatar, for example. You go to Google and look up a nice picture. Then, you have to save the picture somewhere with the right click menu (Download Manager is being used for that, very annoying). then, you have to go to pidgin and browse for the picture. Wouldn't it be nice if you can lookup a avatar, copy the url, paste it into the file dialog? That's easier than saving the image first. the data will be stored in a local cache, which will be emptied when you log off.

include qemu(M$ windows) or any other virtual machine in live cd like wubi
Written by everlasting.puneet the 29 Jul 08 at 20:19. Category: Installation. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
ubuntu live cd is to test and then install so i put a suggestion that ubuntu live cd should consist of an emulator which can run before installing from wubi.
this will be a new concept of testing ubuntu without rebooting windows. and new users will love that.

super user theme always default ubuntu (unless manually changed)
Written by m6arate the 29 Jul 08 at 23:54. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Update manager. New
when I change a theme on my limited user account, everything changes nicely, but when I run an application as super user (say, the automatic update manager) it is at the ugly default gnome theme and not the original ubuntu theme as usual. I realize it is a major security risk to install themes to the super user account automatically, so I propose that the theme be locked as the default orange theme unless manually changed.

Easy way to update library include path in .bashrc
Written by nimals1986 the 30 Jul 08 at 06:52. Category: Programming. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
It would be of great use if one is able to install new library files and easily browse in a gui and locate the new files to be updated into the .bashrc or .bash_profile.

especially when a tar.gz package is to be used where we need to use the cmds ./configure make and make install

Someone new to linux will find it really very useful and can soon begin programming with the new lib files..

Don't you hate when you by mistake press crtl + alt + backspace at the same time? And everything you are working on just disappear you don't even have to save.

Now why don't do like fedora, make taping crtl + alt + backspace once make a sound so you know that you have pressed it and if you press crtl + alt + backspace twice you restart X11.

OpenOffice.org file saving options, save as....
Written by spyyder the 30 Jul 08 at 22:46. Category: Office. Related to: OpenOffice.org Word Processor. New
On first boot of OpenOffice why not bring up a prompt that ask the user if they they want their default save format to be MS Office or OpenOffice format. I know Ubuntu wants to support open formats, but linux is about choice, why not offer it?? Defaulting to ODF is not very friendly and is no better than MS defaulting to their formats, even if ODF open.

Import More Options From Windows
Written by eld1e6o the 7 Apr 08 at 08:34. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We need to import more options from windows when install ubuntu or after that

As example, Wallpapers, firefox settings, winamp and windows media directories, any icons and folder previews, etc. (their are in files in their configuration files) and the ability to to create links to images, music, etc in the personal folder of windows.
There are a lot of settings that can be copied from there and it's too easy and useful for many users

And thanks to this we could set up automatically some programs (eg, the music library, our browsers, etc.).

Give me the ability to set my screen blank (black)
Written by deadowl the 20 May 08 at 02:41. Category: Hardware support. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Honestly, I want to fall asleep right now. I haven't slept for over twenty-four hours because there was a family crisis. I want the ability to listen to music and just blank out my laptop screen while listening to the Cowboy Bebop Soundtrack, and to have that ability easy to come by.
