Give support to Fluxbuntu projecte (let them to enjoy Ubuntu official family)
Written by LitusMayol the 14 Aug 08 at 08:05. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
We've KDE, GNOME, Xcfe... Why not Fluxbox?

I'm using an old laptop that was too old to work with Ubuntu, Kubuntu either Xubuntu. But at last I saved it by using Fluxbuntu. It isn't as userfriendly as officials Ubuntus are, maybe because they've no support.

Though it would be a good idea.

Sound-Activated Screen Lock   forum
Written by supermike the 29 Feb 08 at 06:07. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would love to impress people by clapping my hands or making a small sound that the system is trained to respond to, and this would activate my screen lock. It would add to the cool factor with Ubuntu.

As well, I noticed in the forums a way to use Bluetooth from proximity of your cellphone in order to lock and unlock your screen lock, and I think that should be built right into Ubuntu rather than having people do all the manual work to add this. Therefore, one could lock or unlock the screen lock with Bluetooh, the sound technique, or manual password, and they could choose multiple options there or just one option for one kind of action, such as bluetooth or manual password to unlock, but sound to lock.

Let's not make Ubuntu an idiot-proof OS   forum
Written by UBfusion the 1 Mar 08 at 21:42. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Sub-title #1: Leave default browser and apps as they are...

This is my first post on brainstorm, inspired by my attempt to comment on whether Firefox should be replaced by Epiphany (idea #229), which strangely enough mutated into this post.

I really don't understand why everybody flamed idea #229. Every OS has a browser default. In the case of Linux, it is not glued to the OS, so one can safely uninstall it (or just don't use it) in case he/she doesn't like it. I don't really care what _any_ default application any OS offers in its standard distribution, I will still find out and use the best there is, according to _my_ criteria and needs.

Things I consider:

1. Which browser (or application) has the largest developer base who fixes all the security, rendering and performance issues?
2. Which browser (or application) has the largest user base who identify bugs and inform the developers to remove them?

Regarding 1 & 2 the answers are obvious.

3. Do I want a fast browser (or application) or a secure one?
4. Do I want a fast inaccurate (in rendering) browser (or application) or a slow and accurate one?
5. Do I want a minimal feature fast browser (or application) or a full-featured slow one?

Regarding 3 to 5, the answers are NOT obvious to me. It's a matter of compromises that I have to make depending on my needs at the moment. That's why on Windows I find myself using 3 browsers: Firefox when I'm on unknown territory, Kmeleon when I want speed and Safari when I want colour corrected browsing (it's the only one supporting ICC profiles - thank god Firefox 3 will implement it).

To sum up: I refuse voting either for or against ideas proposing "the best" default application. However the defaults are making this world come round and much thinking should be attributed when deciding what to package in a distro.

Remove Nvidia logo from startup when using restricted drivers
Written by Ape the 5 Apr 08 at 05:59. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
There is that annoying Nvidia ad every time I boot X. That comes with the restricted drivers. It would be better without the Nvidia logo.

EDIT:
It can be manually disabled with

Option "NoLogo" "True"

in xorg.conf, but the logo should be disabled by default.

Add Flock Web Browser to Universe or Multiverse
Written by cerebrix the 29 Mar 08 at 21:26. Category: Internet & Networking. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The flock web browser (www.flock.com) is a great example of social networking tied into the mozilla backend. photobucket and flickr integration, wordpress blogging, gmail, online bookmark sites, facebook, youtube, and twitter. All in one tightly integrated package.

Having this browser as a standard option in the repos will, in my opinion give a better desktop experience to those interested in that sort of thing.

With the success of digg, facebook, and other social sites, making it easier to use a package like this (rather than going to a place like getdeb) and deploy it will only make our repos better and our platform more fun for new users.

Applications that stop 'responding' should get less CPU
Written by bescritt the 27 Mar 08 at 00:30. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
This can be implemented by doing a renice on any CPU-hogging processes that don't catch SIGXCPU.
This would be easy to implement, would improve responsiveness, and wouldn't break anything.
Similar functionality has been available on W*****s for some time with the ForumWare program "ProcessTamer".
This suggestion is an intentional duplicate, but with a less technical title.

I saw this blueprint from launchpad but it is not yet approved. I think this is a good venue for talking and helping ubuntu users live. Below is the project summary lifter from (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuLiveChatSupport)

The UbuntuLiveChatSupport aims to provide an interface to communicate to other ubuntu users with the same language & location, as well as to connect to the official ubuntu channel in freenode.net. It also aims to get live chat support from ubuntu users right into the desktop menu, via "System > Help > Live Chat Support".

Enable Quicken and TurboTax Support for US
Written by DE Retiree the 29 Feb 08 at 14:55. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
I would switch to ubuntu in a heartbeat if there were support for Quicken and TurboTax (latest versions). I have not had success with virtual machines. Perhaps you could work with Intuit to have them make linux versions of their programs available.

The new "Done" icon for Implemented Ideas looks weird, it doesn't look like a tick it looks like a distorted V.

Appointments that you make in the calendar are important and you must not miss them.

The dates which do have appointments are visibly indicated by having the date in bold text.
However, it is quite easy to miss it, since its not so noticeable.

I propose to increase the visibility of dates which have a calendar appointment.
This I propose using a red circle around the date.

I have attached an image which is to illustrate the proposal.

Image which illustrates proposal:

When I chat on #ubuntu with Pidgin, and someone say "hey, join #ubuntu-social its nice place", then I want to double-click on #ubuntu-social in his sentence to join it.
So I don't have to type /join #ubuntu-social

Please, add feature, so that channels that people mention on IRC in Pidgin becomes clickable, so you can join them by click on them.

Mozilla Firefox comes with search engines by default.

In Google, when you search for something, and it lists the links it find, and you click on the links, you get directly to the links.
In Yahoo, when you search for something, and it lists the links it finds, when you click on the links, it redirects you to them through themself, hence spying on their users.

Example, instead of linking directly to http://www.linux.com/ they link to;
* http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGkxY36.NHOFUA1vBXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEzcnVyMjkyBHNlYwN zcgRwb3MDMQRjb2xvA3NrMQR2dGlkA0gwODVfMTI1/SIG=119t26bpi/EXP=1206205623/**http%3a //www.linux.com/

Yahoo has been criticized for their adware and spyware;
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahoo#Adware_and_Spyware

They also helped the Chinese government by giving up data, resulting in the imprisonment of Chinese political dissidents.
Shi Tao, a journalist working for a Chinese newspaper, was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahoo#Work_in_China

We should keep Google, Wikipedia and Creative Commons. Google is our strong ally.
However, Yahoo and eBay never did shit for us, why should we help them out?

Smartmontools GUI in repositories
Written by taron the 21 Mar 08 at 19:00. Category: System. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
Many people said that they would like to have a GUI for Smartmontools. It doesn't need to be a big, great thing, but just a little GUI that can make S.M.A.R.T. tests and a few other things.

Please make that GUI and put it in the repository.

Smartctl is the only Linux program for S.M.A.R.T. testing. And also beginners can have broken harddisks. So that GUI would be very gentle.

More freedom of Desktop arrangement
Written by dustigroove the 21 Mar 08 at 19:26. Category: Look and Feel. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
The desktop context-menu option for "Clean Up by Name" should also include the options for sorting by "Size", "Type", "Date", and "Emblems", as is already possible under all normal Nautilus windows.

I would also like to recommend having the option to have the desktop icons arranged starting from the right side if preferred by the user. Default should of course continue to be sorting starting from the left side, but having a choice for those of us that are either are used to this method, or just find that it fits us better, would be of great benefit.

--

DISCLAIMER: Some components of this idea should be _options_ and not the defaults. I'm not a big fan of forcing anyone to do something a certain way, but I am a huge proponent for choice and flexibility.

Improve some of the web site's artwork
Written by vexorian the 21 Mar 08 at 20:18. Category: Others. Related to: Nothing/Others. New
ubuntu.com is the introduction card most people see before trying ubuntu.

But there are some images and artwork that could really use improvement.

I am an avid lover of the default theme and all, I don't really have issues with the color schemes but for example, I got issues with ubuntu counter pic.

The logo looks blurry, the contrast between the background and the logo do not work either. In comparison to the top right logo which looks very good this one doesn't look professional.

If I remember correctly, before the countdown there was a similar picture with the same color combination + blurriness about the release of 7.10 and previously, 7.04. I think this style should be avoided, and the web site should insist on using the style of the top logo.

Ubuntu advertisments for fans who own websites and blogs

A lot of ubuntu users may own blogs and websites , they most probably love ubuntu and want to pay the community back.
if the ubuntu website can offer flash banner ads which are professional and unobtrusive, users can help spread the word.

the banners must be professional and convey the message clearly.
it should allow users to change certain aspects of this to match the website design.

only logo`s with slogans will not help as people dont know about ubuntu.

THE LINUX desktop market share is 0.65% [source:wikipedia] and we need to change this,

the banners will help in branding and it isnt hard to create.

we may also need professional introduction videos to the ubuntu desktop which can be used for marketing purposes.
it can also be included in the iso disc.
